Ranking and Selection (R&S) procedures are designed for selecting the best among a finite set of systems using stochastic simulation, guaranteeing the quality of the final selection. Instead of assuming a known lower bound on the difference between the best and others, we consider the probably approximately correct (PAC) selection formulation, which ensures a high quality solution with high probability for all configurations. In this paper, we present a new fully sequential selection procedure, called the Envelope Procedure (EP), which accommodates a variety of sampling rules that, together with a carefully defined termination condition, ensures a PAC selection. A particular sampling rule that achieves good efficiency is proposed. We compare the efficiency of the EP with some existing procedures in numerical experiments, and the results show that the EP saves considerable computational effort in many problem configurations.

We deal with general composite distributed resource allocation problems over networks, which arise from many application areas such as economic dispatch, demand response and network utility maximization. Conventionally, we have to resort to centralized or parallel approaches to solve these problems. It is well known that distributed solutions are more preferable due to their robustness to component failures and great scalability to the size of the network. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm, termed DuSPA, to solve the above problem in a distributed way. The algorithm is developed from the dual counterpart of the above problem leveraging on certain splitting techniques. We will show that the proposed algorithm is able to find the optimal solution with a non-ergodic convergence rate of O(1/k) in terms of fixed point residual for general (potentially non-smooth) convex cost functions with a smooth constitutive term. We also apply the proposed algorithm to the well-known economic dispatch problem and compare it with the state-of-the-art to show its effectiveness.

Recently fault injection has increasingly been used both to attack software applications, and to test system robustness. Detecting fault injection vulnerabilities has been approached with a variety of different but limited methods. This paper proposes a general process without these limitations that uses model checking to detect fault injection vulnerabilities in binaries. The efficacy of this process is demonstrated by detecting vulnerabilities in the PRESENT binary.

Edge devices (e.g., smartphones, tablets, connected vehicles, IoT nodes) with sensing, storage and communication resources are increasingly penetrating our environments. Many novel applications can be created when nearby peer edge devices share data. Caching can greatly improve the data availability, retrieval robustness and latency. In this paper, we study the unique issue of caching fairness in edge environment. Due to distinct ownership of peer devices, caching load balance is critical. We consider fairness metrics and formulate an integer linear programming problem, which is shown as summation of multiple Connected Facility Location (ConFL) problems. We propose an approximation algorithm leveraging an existing ConFL approximation algorithm, and prove that it preserves a 6.55 approximation ratio. We further develop a distributed algorithm where devices exchange data reachability and identify popular candidates as caching nodes. Extensive evaluation shows that compared with existing wireless network caching algorithms, our algorithms significantly improve data caching fairness while keeping the contention induced latency similar to the best existing algorithms.

In this paper, the problem of the deterministic pilot allocation for sparse channel estimation in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system is investigated. This method is based on mutual coherence minimization of the measurement matrix associated with the OFDM system pilot subcarriers. It is known that if the set of pilot pattern is a Cyclic Difference Set (CDS), the mutual coherence of the measurement matrix is minimized. However, CDS in most practical OFDM system is not available. Few research efforts have tackled the problem of pilot allocation by proposing methods that lead to suboptimal solutions in order to ignore the computationally complex exhaustive search method. This contribution, however, proposes two pilot allocation design schemes for the construction of deterministic partial Fourier matrices satisfying the Restricted Isometry Property (RIP) namely, the Generic Random Search (GRS) and Progressive Search (PS) based on bounding the mutual coherence between different columns of the measurement matrix. Simulation results show that the two proposed pilot allocation design schemes are effective and offer a better channel estimation performance in terms of MSE when compared to former pilot allocation design methods.

The energy optimization of resource constrained energy harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have constituted a major research topic in recent years in areas such as environmental monitoring, hazard detection and industrial applications. Current approaches leverage techniques such as adaptive duty cycling, transmission power adaptation and data reduction methods to minimize energy consumption. However, the majority of the state of the art approaches with WSN research assume that energy generation, although variable, is not controllable in-situ to optimize energy generation. In this paper, we design a low power, low cost, open source solar tracking mechanism for energy harvesting wireless sensors. Furthermore, we formulate the dynamic energy generation system as an optimization problem and from this design an adaptive, lightweight, distributed, prediction free algorithm to maximize the energy generation of the system. Moreover, we evaluate the proposed method using a combination of real trace-driven real solar data based simulation, comparison to a centralized globally optimum solution and real world experimentation. From our evaluation, an improvement of up to 165% in energy generation has been seen when compared to traditional tracking methodologies and that the lightweight distributed implementation is, on average, 99.1% as efficient as the globally optimum solution across 28 distinct testing scenarios.

This article discusses software tools for studying non-linear dynamical systems. For a detailed analysis of the behavior of chaotic systems stepsize-parameter diagrams are introduced. A new self-adjoint semi-explicit algorithm for the numerical integration of differential equations is described. Two modifications of the proposed method are represented. A two-memcapacitor circuit is selected as a test dynamical system. Symmetry, accuracy and performance analysis of semi-explicit extrapolation ODE solver are considered in a series of computational experiments. Phase space of the two-memcapacitor circuit model, stepsize-parameter diagrams and dynamical maps are given as experimental findings.

Crossbars of nanoscale memristors are being fabricated to serve as high-density non-volatile memory devices. The flow of current through memristor crossbars has been recently used to perform in-memory computations. However, existing approaches based on decision procedures only scale to the simplest circuits such as one-bit adders and other approaches employing decision diagrams produce large crossbar designs. In this paper, we present a new method for synthesizing compact combinational circuits using nanoscale crossbars. Our synthesis procedure exploits a symbolic representation of Boolean functions and employs model counting to guide a simulated annealing based search procedure. The proposed method creates crossbars that are up to about 6.3 times more compact than crossbars synthesized using decision diagrams. Our approach can scale to problems at least 4 times larger than the approach based on quantified decision procedures.

Pathfinding algorithms are at the heart of several classes of applications, such as network appliances (routing), GPS navigation and autonomous cars, which are related to recent trends in Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT). Moreover, advances in semiconductor miniaturization technologies have enabled the design of efficient Systems-on-Chip (SoC) devices, with demanding performance requirements and energy consumption constraints. Such systems might include Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) to allow the design of customized co-processors that yield lower power consumption and higher performance. Therefore, this work aims at designing and evaluating four efficient pathfinding co-processors, each one implementing a different well-known pathfinding algorithm: breadth-first, dijkstra, greedy and a-star. Each co-processor is designed using Xilinx High-Level Synthesis (HLS) compiler and is implemented in the programming logic of a Xilinx FPGA embedded with an ARM microprocessor, which is in charge of controlling the set of co-processors. Extensive performance, circuit-area and energy consumption results shows that each co-processor can efficiently execute a pathfinding algorithm, paving the way for novel dedicated accelerators.

In this paper a Generalized Proportional Integral controller is synthesized in order to stabilize both attitude and position a four rotor mini helicopter. The main idea to use this kind of controller is to avoid the use of derivative terms and asymptotic observers in the design of the control law and consequently their respective numeric algorithms for the real-time implementation. So, these asymptotic observers and derivative terms are replaced by integral state reconstructor. The synthesized GPI control law is tested by numerical simulation considering a quadrotor dynamical model obtained by Euler-Lagrange formalism and obtained results are satisfactory and they suggest that the synthesized GPI control law can be tested in real-time flights.
