In this paper we outline an approach to a fast low-cost system for the inspection and evaluation of surface-mount assemblies and solder joints, giving particular focus to the need for robustness in such a system. We describe the software modules involved in extracting features, and shape analysis for the purpose of inspection. A common problem during the early stages of image processing is the loss of information about the edges of shape because of noise, weak contrast, or occlusion, which often increases the amount of incorrect interpretations of a given image when presented to higher levels of processing. An algorithm is described which significantly reduces the effect of such problems before information is passed to later stages of the vision process. The algorithm, which uses information about contour to correct dropouts is generic, employing no application specific information and is therefore applicable to vision systems in general.

In this paper, we developed statistical models to characterize the text line and text block structures on document images using the text word bounding boxes. We posed the extraction problem as finding the text lines and text blocks that maximize the Bayesian probability of the text lines and text blocks by observing the text word bounding boxes. We derived the so-called probabilistic linear displacement model (PLDM) to model the text line structures from text word bounding boxes. We also developed an augmented PLDM model to characterize the text block structures from text line bounding boxes. By systematically gathering statistics from a large population of document images, we are able to validate our models experimentally and determine the proper model parameters. We designed and implemented an iterative algorithm that utilized these probabilistic models to extract the text lines and text blocks. The quantitative performances of the algorithm in terms of the rates of miss, false, correct, splitting, merging and spurious detections of the text lines and text blocks were reported.

In a series of prior papers Kadar et al have designed, developed and experimentally evaluated a family of centralized detection algorithms for multi-frequency radars operating in various degrees of clutter. Previously, two centralized fusion algorithms, called non-coherent integration (NCI) and T-squared (TSQ), followed by adaptive constant false alarm (ACFAR) post-processing were evaluated. In this paper, an optimum adaptive CFAR version of the T- squared algorithm, called ATSQ, is developed. The performance of ATSQ is compared with the NCI and TSQ algorithms using measured data in clutter. The fusion performance comparisons are presented in terms of receiver operating characteristics (ROC). It is shown that the new ATSQ algorithm is robust to changes of the background clutter. Its ROC performance is near the optimum achievable, and is significantly better than either NCI or TSQ.

A new method of constructing 3D maps based on the relative magnification and blurring of a pair of images is presented, where the images are taken at two camera positions of a small displacement. The method, referred to here as ''Depth from Magnification and Blurring,'' aims at generating a precise 3D map of local scene of objects to be manipulated by a robot arm with a hand-eye camera. The method uses a single standard camera with telecentric lens, and assumes neither active illumination nor active control of camera parameters. The proposed depth extraction algorithm is simple in computation. Fusing the Mo disparate sources of depth information, magnification and blurring, the proposed method provides more accurate and robust depth estimation. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

For an interpretation of pressure signals detected by piezoelectric PVDF-foils several parameters are of importance. These are for example pressure pulse duration and rise times, active area of the film and specifications concerning the high-frequency technique of the experimental setup. Using an input-resistance of 1 M(Omega) at the storage-oscilloscope leads to reflections of the signal which superimpose each other when reflected a second time at the foil. This might cause an apparent increase of the amplitude. The utilization of a longer cable allows a separation of each reflected pulse, but it causes the problem, that the cable's input- impedance approaches its characteristic impedance of 50 (Omega) . This will lead to a time derived signal as well as using 50 (Omega) as input-resistance at the scope. Therefore a direct measurement of short pressure transients requires a very short cable and an input-resistance of 1 M(Omega) . Otherwise the measured signal allows no proportional relation between pressure transient and measured voltage signal. In the latter case a frequency-dependent correction of the signal becomes necessary. This has been developed in this paper by means of Fast Fourier Transform algorithm. After correction in the frequency-domain the signal is transformed back into the time-domain.

We report on wavelet compression of a 1D prototype benchmark problem of sufficient complexity to capture the features of 3D quantum electronics structure calculations. These problems have a multi-scale character through the presence of a set of singularities corresponding to atomic nuclei. Theoretical estimates of asymptotic decay across scales are derived and verified numerically. In addition, we study the effects of the location of singularity on the accuracy of the compression and on scaling.

In this article we present a new solution for the problem of contrast enhancement. The method is based on the decomposition of the original image into its primitive components. In a first stage a multiresolution representation of the image is computed yielding transform coefficients proportional to the maximum of the local gradient at a specific scale and at a specific position in the image. As an image detail exists at several scales, the transform coefficients corresponding to the same image primitive are grouped. Contrast is enhanced by groupwise non-linear amplification of the transform coefficients. An inverse transform is then applied to the modified coefficients, resulting in a uniformly contrast-enhanced image without artifacts. Preliminary results demonstrate the effectiveness of this method. It could be used in a wide range of applications.

Present staring IR missile warning technology operates at thresholds that approach 1000 times noise equivalent irradiance (NEI) under stressing clutter conditions severely limiting the detection range. The detection thresholds must be lower for high probability of declaration, with a low false alarm rate, of low observable targets within high clutter environments. The DICE program includes three approaches for clutter rejection and improved signal to noise. One approach combines the clutter suppression capabilities of two- dimensional adaptive spatial filters with very accurate frame registration and adaptive temporal processing to meet DICE program requirements. A second approach consists of an adaptive neural maximum likelihood algorithm combined with a hyperbolic filter (HF) for clutter suppression. The HF is a 3- dimensional filter using a multi-dimensional fast Fourier transform which suppresses clutter based on relative motion to reduce the processing load of the adaptive neural algorithm. The maximum likelihood neural algorithm uses clutter models for comparison with sensor data to eliminate the IR clutter and declare targets. The third DICE approach combines dual color discrimination with non-linear morphological signal processing for single frame missile detection. The algorithm estimates the clutter background of one IR band by using a second IR band then enhances point like geometries for missile detection. The technique requirements include probability of declaring a threat of greater than 90%, a false alarm rate (FAR) of less than 1 per hour and declaration of threat in less than or equal to 2 seconds from the time the target first crosses the detection threshold. The goal is to maintain a detection threshold of 10 times present state-of-the-art noise equivalent irradiance (NEI) even in a highly cluttered background. Program results are available from two approaches as of March 1996.

This paper considers an optimal control problem constrained by coupled hyperbolic and parabolic-like dynamics arising in an acoustic structure interaction. A numerical algorithm, based on the FEM, is formulated for computations of solutions to associated Matrix Algebraic Riccati Equations. Results of a numerical simulation of the algorithm are presented.

The ARES (Airborne Remote Earth Sensing) program employs a dual mode instrument for the collection of calibrated IR data. The instrument can be used as either an imaging radiometer (Staring Radiometer (STR)), or as an imaging spectrometer (Spatially Scanning Dispersive Spectrometer (SSDS)). In the SSDS mode, the instrument is capable of resolving 75 bands in the 2 mu m to 6 mu m region. Spectral separation is achieved by spatial dispersion of incoming radiation across the FPA using a bi-prism. As with other instruments of this type, mechanical and optical imperfections produce errors in spectral registration and radiometric calibrations;non-uniform dispersion by optics and a finite size for the FPA elements produce imperfect bandpass characteristics, most notably channel crosstalk. The methods developed at Lockheed-Martin Advanced Technology Center (LMATC), the sensor contractors, and at SciTec to characterize the spectral response of each spectrometer channel using a scanned monochromator and normalization algorithms will be discussed.
