The decomposition of time-frequency representations (TFRs) in terms of weighted spectrograms has been recently proposed by several authors. Spectrogram decomposition concepts allow inner products to be used in the computations rather than the more cumbersome outer products usually associated with TFR computations. Kernels are decomposed in terms of eigenvectors in such a manner that a TFR may be represented by a truncated spectrogram series according to the strength of the eigenvalues associated with these eigenvectors. Many TFRs can be represented by relatively few spectrograms due to the small contributions of the remaining spectrograms with eigenvalues below some threshold value. The windows of the spectrograms forming the spectrogram series are the eigenvectors of the decomposition of the kernel of the particular representation. In the present paper it is shown how full TFR representations can be obtained by using a carefully chosen set of scaled cross spectrogram windows, thus avoiding the inherent approximations of the eigenvector approach. Much redundancy can be taken advantage of to permit computation of a small number of short-time Fourier transforms (STFTs). It is not practical to compute the Wigner distribution via the spectrogram decomposition approach due to the fact that the singular values of the decomposition are plus or minus one, precluding truncation of the spectrogram series. The new approach, on the other hand, can represent a Wigner distribution and other TFRs with a small number of STFTs. These STFTs can be used to compute a number of spectrograms and cross-spectrograms which, when appropriately weighted and summed, yield a given TFR, depending on the kernel used in the decomposition.

The object of this communication is to compare two inversion algorithms in their application to the blind deconvolution problem. After a brief summary of the previous works in this field, we describe the Richardson-Lucy and the steepest descent algorithms and we introduce these methods in the basic error reduction algorithm of Ayers and Dainty. These algorithms are compared when used for blind deconvolution of simulated binary objects convolved by a point spread function and corrupted by a Gaussian additive noise. We consider the effects of the noise level on the reconstruction error, together with the effects of the algorithmic parameters (inner and outer iteration numbers). Particular effects occurring during the reconstruction process are also shown.

The William Herschel Telescope is a 4.2 m altazimuth design which has been in operation since 1987. The architecture of its control system is briefly outlined, and measurements of pointing, tracking, and field rotation are presented. Recent developments, including accurate algorithms for offset guiding, correction of errors due to refracting optics, and automation of the acquisition procedure, are described.

Finding the shortest path between points on a surface is a challenging global optimization problem. It is difficult to devise an algorithm that is computationally efficient, locally accurate and guarantees to converge to the globally shortest path. In this paper a two stage coarse to the fine approach of finding shortest paths is suggested. In the first stage a fast algorithm is used to obtain an approximation to the globally shortest path. In the second stage the approximation is refined into a locally optimal path. In the first stage we use the fast algorithm introduced by Kiryati and Szekely that combines a 3-D length estimator with graph search. This path is then refined to a shorter geodesic curve by an algorithm that deforms an arbitrary initial curve ending at two given surface points via geodesic curvature shortening flow. The 3D curve shortening flow is transformed into an equivalent 2D one that is implemented using an efficient numerical algorithm for curve evolution with fixed end points, introduced by Kimmel and Sapiro.

Coastal System Station, Panama City, Florida, is developing an airborne multispectral visible mine detection system for detecting minefields in littoral regions. Nichols Research Corporation (NRC) in support of CSS has been tasked to develop mine detection algorithms. NRC developed a generic baseline mine detection algorithm in order to provide a stable reference by which to measure other algorithms and enhancements. This algorithm has also served as a baseline to be modified and enhanced as the nature of the data is better understood and discrimination methodology is refined. The baseline algorithm is described in this paper along with modifications which significantly improve its robustness and with the analyses which motivated those modifications.

A region-based multi-criterion segmentation algorithm for image sequence coding is described in this paper. It is based on morphological segmentation, motion estimation, and compensation techniques. The concept of multi-criterion is introduced in the traditional gray-level segmentation process, which takes into account the high temporal redundancy. The current image is segmented into two different kinds of regions: homogeneous gray-level regions coded by texture modeling method or homogeneous motion regions represented by motion compensation. No prediction error needs to be transmitted. Contours are simplified by a new non-linear filter. Preliminary experimental results have demonstrated high potential performance, with the combination of the power of contour-texture approach and that of the motion compensation technique, for very low bitrate image sequence coding.

In this parallel surface rendering algorithm based on dividing cube² on a SIMD machine MasPar MP-1, we address the problem of load balancing and image composition. We divide a 3D array of N_x x N_y x N_z volume data into N_x x N_y columns, each N_z deep. Each processor in the mesh receives a subvolume of such data columns. All processors synchronously traverse its subvolume to determine the voxels intersecting the isosurface. Intersecting voxels are called isovoxels. Partial load balancing distributes the isovoxels contained in a row of processors evenly among the processors in that row to reduce the network traffic and complexity of the rendering phase. Each isovoxel is subdivided into point primitives using dividing cube algorithm. Rendering algorithm transforms the surface points and their normals and projects them into the view plane.

A least-squares algorithm developed for analysis of fast-neutron transmission data resulting from non-destructive interrogation of sealed luggage and containers is subjected to a probabilistic interpretation. The approach is to convert knowledge of uncertainties in the derived areal elemental densities, as provided by this algorithm, into probability information that can be used to judge whether an interrogated object is either benign or potentially contains an illicit substance that should be investigated further. Two approaches are considered in this paper. One involves integration of a normalized probability density function associated with the least-squares solution. The other tests this solution against a hypothesis that the interrogated object indeed contains illicit material. This is accomplished by an application of the F-distribution from statistics. These two methods of data interpretation are applied to specific sets of neutron transmission results produced by Monte Carlo simulation.

In many video coding schemes, especially at low bitrates, a temporal subsampling of the input image sequence is considered. It is realized by skipping images at the transmitter, and these frames must be reconstructed at the receiver side. In order to prevent jerkiness or blurring in the moving areas, motion-compensated interpolation has to be applied. Frame interpolation algorithms usually consider two consecutively transmitted frames and assume constant velocity linear motion between these frames. The algorithm proposed in our paper assumes constant acceleration -- instead of constant speed -- that is estimated based on three consecutively transmitted images and two corresponding motion fields. This approach is much closer to the real situation than the previous methods taking into account only constant speed motion. The proposed interpolation algorithm results in smoother movement in the final interpolated video sequence. Experiments carried out using real-life image sequences confirm the applicability of the proposed method for low and very low bitrate video coding.

A hierarchical scheme for chain encoded digital contours is introduced. If the contour represents the boundary of a binary image, a true digitization of the image is realized as the pyramid structure goes from the fine to coarser resolution levels. A progressive transmission system is designed to go from a coarse resolution level to finer levels which uses essentially the same number of bits as transmission of the contour at the finest resolution.
