Kinoform is a phase modulating computer-generated hologram. Most often, algorithms for nonparaxial kinoform synthesis use discrete propagation operators and solution is given in a discrete form. Kinoform is obtained by interpolation from these discrete samples in its plane. This paper gives the relationship between the continuous reconstruction of that kinoform and the discrete synthesis solution in the image plane. The relationship allows us to describe complex amplitude distribution in diffraction orders, predicts the possibility of speckle-like reconstruction, and is a basis for an efficient method of zero-order image calculation. Spatial frequency filtering properties of discrete algorithms are analyzed and criteria for algorithm sampling parameters are derived.

We present an adaptive FIR filtering approach, which is referred to as the APES (amplitude and phase estimation of a sinusoid), for complex spectral estimation. We compare the APES algorithm with other FIR filtering approaches including the Welch and Capon methods. We also describe how to apply the FIR filtering approaches to target range signature estimation and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging. We show via both numerical and experimental examples that the adaptive FIR filtering approaches such as Capon and APES can yield more accurate spectral estimates with much lower sidelobes and narrower spectral peaks than the FFT method, which is also a special case of the FIR filtering approaches. We show that although the APES algorithnm yields somewhat wider spectral peaks than the Capon method, the former gives more accurate overall spectral estimates and SAR images that the latter and the FFT method.

This paper presents an alternating minimization (AM) algorithm used in training radial basis function (RBF) networks. The AM algorithm can also be viewed as a competitive learning paradigm. Its use is illustrated by optimizing a colony-style control system. The application arises in the context of hybrid control systems. The algorithm is a modification of a small-step interior point method used in solving primal linear programs. The algorithm has a convergence rate of 0((root)nL) iterations where n is a measure of the network size and L is a measure of the resulting solution's accuracy.

This paper presents the development of generalized fuzzy k-means algorithms and their application in image compression based on vector quantization. The development of generalized fuzzy k-means algorithms is based on the search for partitions of the feature vector space other than those generated by existing fuzzy k-means algorithms. These alternative partitions can be obtained by relaxing one of the conditions imposed on the membership functions. The clustering problem is formulated as a constrained minimization problem, whose solution depends on the selection of a constrain function that satisfies certain conditions. The solution of this minimization problem results in a broad family of generalized fuzzy k-means algorithms, which include the existing fuzzy k-means algorithms as a special case. Moreover, the proposed formulation results in the minimum fuzzy k-means algorithms, which are computationally less demanding than the existing fuzzy k-means algorithms. A broad family of admissible constrain functions result in an extended family of fuzzy k-means algorithms, which at the limit provide the fuzzy k-means and minimum fuzzy k-means algorithms. The resulting algorithms are used in image compression based on vector quantization.

Forward scattering solutions, whereby one predicts the scattered electromagnetic field given the goemetry, find numerous engineering applications in computer aided design. Therefore, a fast way to solve the forward scattering problem will impact a number of areas, like high- speed circuits, integrated optics, antenna analysis, remote sensing, geophysical sensing, and inverse scattering. We will describe several fast methods developed in our group to solve the forward scattering problem rapidly. These methods involve solving the volume integral equation of scattering as well as surface integral equation of scattering. Different strategies are used to accelerate the solutions of these integral equations. Both iterative and direct solution techniques will be considered. The computational complexity and memory requirement of various scattering algorithms will be discussed. In inverse scattering, one reconstructs the physical goemetry of a scatterer from the measured scattered field. Hence, it finds applications in image and profile reconstructions. When using a linear method, multiple scattering within a scatterer is ignored. By using a nonlinear inverse scattering method, such multiple scattering effect is accounted for. Image and profile reconstruction using such nonlinear inverse algorithm can remove artifacts that linear methods would not remove. We will discuss the use of the distorted Born iterative method and local shape function method to reconstruct a scattering object.

Many of the 189 hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) listed in the Environmental Protection Agency regulations can be monitored by frequency agile CO₂ DIAL (FACD) systems. These systems can be used to survey industrial and military installations and toxic waste repositories at ranges of a few kilometers from emission sources. FACD systems may become a valuable tool for detection and estimation of a wide array of HAPs. However, in most cases, several of the listed HAPs will be present simultaneously and discrimination of one HAP from another based on differences in spectral characteristics can be challenging for FACD systems. While FACD hardware is mature and is capable of addressing these discrimination issues, multiple-contaminate separation algorithms need to be developed. A one week field test was conducted at Los Banos, California, to gather multiple HAP data that will be used for future algorithm development. A vapor chamber was used to control disseminated concentrations of each HAP and reduce effects of atmospheric turbulence and wind direction and speed. Data was collected for several chemicals injected into the vapor chamber simultaneously. The data and results from the field test are presented and calibration issues are discussed.

A simple and intuitive formalism is presented to describe diffraction in multi-layered periodic structures. We use the well known results from scalar analysis (wave propagation in homogeneous layered media) and show that they can be generalized rather readily to vector problems such as diffraction analysis. Specifically, we derive: (1) generalized Fresnel equations appropriate for reflection and transmission from an infinitely thick grating, (2) a generalized Airy formula for thin-film to describe reflection and transmission of light through a lamellar grating and (3) a matrix propagation method akin that used for multi-layer thin film analysis. The results developed here complement the recent work on R- matrix propagation methods. The R-matrix technique is a modal method that has shown to be a numerically stable for calculating diffraction efficiencies from deep groove gratings. The formalism developed here, while equivalent to the R-matrix technique, is not identical and offers a number of advantages. We will discuss these and other related matters in this paper.

In using machine vision for assessing an object's surface quality, many images are required to be processed in order to separate the good areas from the defective ones. Examples can be found in the leather hide grading process; in the inspection of garments/canvas on the production line; in the nesting of irregular shapes into a given surface... . The most common method of subtracting the total area from the sum of defective areas does not give an acceptable indication of how much of the `good' area can be used, particularly if the findings are to be used for the nesting of irregular shapes. This paper presents an image scanning technique which enables the estimation of useable areas within an inspected surface in terms of the user's definition, not the supplier's claims. That is, how much useable area the user can use, not the total good area as the supplier estimated. An important application of the developed technique is in the leather industry where the tanner (the supplier) and the footwear manufacturer (the user) are constantly locked in argument due to disputed quality standards of finished leather hide, which disrupts production schedules and wasted costs in re-grading, re- sorting... . The developed basic algorithm for area scanning of a digital image will be presented. The implementation of an improved scanning algorithm will be discussed in detail. The improved features include Boolean OR operations and many other innovative functions which aim at optimizing the scanning process in terms of computing time and the accurate estimation of useable areas.

This paper presents the application of Neural Networks (ANN) and introduces Genetic algorithms (GA) to agricultural land use classification. Daedalus ATM data at 1 m resolution, has been used to train and test the algorithms. Layered feed forward ANN's have been found to have good generalization properties. The Backpropagation (BP) algorithm is very susceptible to initial conditions and the problem of local minima. Therefore this technique alone is not the best method for the classification of complex multi-dimensional data sets. This paper applies an evolutionary technique for training feed forward ANN's, which searches the error space for a more likely initialization point. Optimization and learning problems are two techniques where ANN's and GA's have excelled. Evolutionary Artificial Neural Networks, introduced in this paper, can be thought of as being a cross between ANNs and GAs. The weights and biases are updated by applying the mutation genetic operator and can be compared with the principle of natural biological life, where survival of the fittest leads to a near optimum ANN. These weights and biases are then adopted by the BP algorithm to quickly converge on the global minima.
