There are some difficulties in the use of a well-known X-ray computer tomography technique due to the strong light scattering in biological tissues. We propose to analyze the whole light scattering picture for the development of novel processing algorithms in tomographical imaging. Time-resolved experiments on the forward scattering of IR-light from a model of biological media illuminated by a picosecond YAG-laser with 10 ps pulse duration have been performed. The scattering radiation was recorded by a streak camera having 1.5 ps time resolution. From these results and theoretical considerations the analytic expression for intensity against time distribution of the laser radiation passed through the media has been obtained. The expression can be used as the basis for tomographical reconstruction.

Remote monitoring of molecular species in the atmosphere is accomplished using a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. Advanced processing algorithms utilized by AIL Systems include the classical least squares (CLS) technique as well as a more recently developed approach which combines digital finite impulse response filtering, adaptive sampling, and artificial neural networks (ANN) to improve detection sensitivity and estimation accuracy. This paper presents a comparison between the CLS and the ANN methods in estimating concentrations of multicomponent mixtures. Detection improvement of ANN over CLS has been demonstrated by examining SF₆ in a stack plume and toluene in a laboratory experiment.

Antenna pattern synthesis deals with choosing control parameters (the complex weights) of an array of antennas, in order to achieve a set of given specifications. It appears that these problems can often be formulated as convex optimization problems, which can be numerically solved with algorithms such as the ellipsoid algorithm of interior point methods. After a brief presentation of antenna pattern synthesis and of convex optimization, we illustrate then with simulations results. We first minimize the sidelobe levels of a cosecant diagram. Then we show an example of interference cancellation and compare it to adaptive techniques. We will also introduce the important problem of robust antenna arrays.

A mask correction algorithm (OPTIMASK) has been designed and implemented. Its main ingredients are optical proximity correction (OPC) and optical design rule checker (ODRC). The algorithm is based on the lithographic notion that a mask has to print throughout its defocus budget, taking into account multiple defocus planes. In each defocus plane the aerial image is computed using FAIM, and the design failures are reported via ODRC. The mask correction is subjected to physical restrictions that do not allow any feature couplings to occur. The union of the failures at all defocus values determines the first step taken in correcting the mask. Then a (constrained) Newton optimization scheme is applied to optimize line shrinkage, linewidth control, and corner rounding errors. All the tools needed to optimize a specific layer within a particular cell and return the optimized layer to the original mask file have been implemented. Several examples will be shown.

ASTER instrument is a high performance spatial imager on board the EOS-AM1 spacecraft, which will be launched in June 1998. The ASTER raw data will be captured by U.S. ground system via TDRSS, processed to level-0 data, and then transferred to the ASTER Ground Data System in Japan for level-1 data products generation. The ASTER Ground Data System consists of the Communication and System Management System (CSMS), ASTER Operation Segment (AOS), Science Data Processing Segment (SDPS), and Direct Receiving Station (DRS). The ASTER Ground Data System adopts a challenging design concept to handle approximately 780 sets of scenes of 14 spectral bands one stereo band (about 80 Gbytes) per day.

This paper presents a general procedure for determining the optimal MPEG coding strategy in terms of the selection of macroblock coding modes and quantizer scales. The two processes of coding mode decision and rate control are intimately related to each other and should be determined jointly in order to achieve optimal coding performance. We formulate the constrained optimization problem and present solutions based upon rate- distortion characteristics, or R(D) curves, for all the macroblocks that compose the picture being coded. Distortion of the entire picture is assumed to be decomposable and expressible as a function of individual macroblock distortions, with this being the objective function to minimize. The determination of the optimal solution is complicated by the MPEG differential encoding of motion vectors and dc coefficients, which introduces dependencies that carry over from macroblock to macroblock for a duration equal to the slice length. Once the upper bound in performance is calculated, it can be used to assess how well practical sub-optimum methods perform.

Mine detection is essential to the military forces' mobility and survivability on the battlefield and to the deminers' survivability in humanitarian demining operations. Mine detection technologies are the same but the operational requirements and consequently the technical emphases are different. Twenty-four hour detection capability and rate of detection are essential in military operations while 100 percent probability of detection is essential in demining operations to ensure the inhabitants' safety. My presentation focuses primarily on mine detection technologies for military operations; however, these technologies are very applicable for detecting mines and mine-like targets during humanitarian demining operations.

A MPEG1 codec that is capable of real-time playback of video and audio on HP's RISC-based workstations has been developed. Real-time playback is achieved by examining the complete MPEG1 decoding pipeline and optimizing the algorithms used for the various stages of the video and audio decompression process. For video decompression, efficient implementations are derived by examining the huffman decoder, inverse quantizer and inverse DCT as a single system. For audio decompression, by viewing the subband synthesis function in MPEG1 layer I and layer II decoding as a DCT, a fast 32-point DCT suitable for use in MPEG1 audio decompression has been developed. Besides algorithmic enhancements, in order to achieve real-time performance, minor changes to the CPU architecture and the display pipeline architecture were needed. The integration of algorithmic and architectural enhancements results in real-time playback of MPEG1 video and audio on HP's RISC based workstations.

This paper deals with the structural proposal of the micro autonomous robotic system, and shows the design of the prototype. We aim at developing the micro robot, which autonomously acts based on its detection, in order to propose a solution to constitute the micro autonomous robotic system. However, as miniaturizing the size, the number of the sensors gets restricted and the information from them becomes lack. Lack of the information makes it difficult to realize an intelligence of quality. Because of that, the micro robotic system needs to develop the simple algorithm. In this paper, we propose the simply logical algorithms to control the actuator, and show the performance of the micro robot controlled by them, and design the Micro Line Trace Robot, which dimension is about 1 cm cube and which moves along the black line on the white-colored ground, and the programmable micro autonomous robot, which dimension is about 2 cm cube and which performs according to the program optionally.

An inversion algorithm based on a nonlinear optimization technique is used to retrieve a subset of forest canopy parameters that can be used in ecosystem modeling. The inversion algorithm uses a parametric model derived from a discrete component forest scattering model which includes all major scattering contributions to radar backscatter. The parametric model, however, is derived for cases where only one mechanism dominates the scattering process, in this case, branch layer volume scattering. The free parameters are taken to be the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric constant of branch layer constituents. The parametric model and the inversion algorithm are validated with synthetic data and applied to two data sets taken at different dates over one of the OTTER sites (Santiam Pass). The inversion algorithm is shown to be a useful tool in the quantitative monitoring of canopy moisture status, as well as a building block of its future versions which will include a more comprehensive set of forest scattering parameters as unknowns.
