Mesoscale oceanographic features are important aspects of ocean circulation. The high volume of satellite-derived oceanographic data coupled with the high level of human skill associated with the detection of oceanographic features in the data has necessitated automating the interpretation process. Morphological edge detectors produce better results than the conventional template- and differentiation-based edge detectors. A grayscale morphological edge-detection algorithms is developed for automatic delineation of mesoscale structure in digital satellite IR images of the ocean. We compare performances of three morphological edge detectors in sea surface temperature fields. We provide experimental results on images from the North Atlantic under various image settings.

The visual inspection of many industrial products is based on contour analysis. The main task is the detection of defects like cracks and chips. The automation of this visual inspection procedure requires robust and flexible systems and algorithms. This paper describes new contour analysis algorithms for defect detection. Innovative techniques for contour filtering and analysis (e.g., scale-space analysis) are presented. The performance of different approaches is shown by several industrial examples and applications.

The Litton Data Systems Vector Neural Network (VNN) is a unique multi-scan integration algorithm currently in development. The target of interest is a low-flying cruise missile. Current tactical radar cannot detect and track the missile in ground clutter at tactically useful ranges. The VNN solves this problem by integrating the energy from multiple frames to effectively increase the target's signal-to-noise ratio. The implementation plan is addressing the APG-63 radar. Real-time results will be available by March 1994.

Spectral line profiles from light, atomic gases in upper planetary atmospheres are commonly non-Maxwellian. The velocity distributions of these light gases are perturbed in complex ways by atmospheric escape processes, by the paucity of thermalizing collisions, and by infrequent but important collisions with hot ions in the plasmasphere. It has long been recognized that the velocity distributions can be used to unfold the physical processes leading to atmospheric escape and to the partitioning of neutral gas trajectory classifications (ballistic, escaping, or satellite). Unfortunately, isolation of the velocity distribution from the measured emission line profile is not a simple matter, especially when neither of the velocity distributions are non- Maxwellian and when the instrument function used to measure the profile is also a complex function. We have experimented with several techniques to accurately retrieve the velocity distribution of atomic hydrogen in the earth's exosphere from the hydrogen Balmer-alpha (H_(alpha )) emission line profile measured with a Fabry-Perot interferometer. Although the derived velocity distribution remains subject to contamination of the measured emission by extraterrestrial and terrestrial sources, the technique to decompose the actual emission function from the combined instrument function plus emission function is established in this work -- and is applicable to many other similar problems. In particular, two techniques are compared. First, a classical deconvolution technique is developed using objective, low-pass filtering. Second, a nonlinear deconvolution algorithm, commonly referred to as `CLEAN' by the radio astronomy community that developed it, is applied to the optical H_(alpha ) spectra. We find that this second technique is useful for an accurate isolation of the velocity distribution of atomic hydrogen in earth's exosphere, while the classical deconvolution is more useful for determining the full wi

We investigated the effect of dissimilar materials on submicron linewidth measurements that are made from phase images. When the relative reflectivity is low, errors are introduced into linewidth measurements made directly from phase images. Two calibration algorithms were developed based on the theoretical modeling of a partially coherent optical system. There was good agreement between the experimental results and the theoretical predictions.

A fusion algorithm is presented for a multisensor tracking system, in which the local trackers are N-scan data association filters. Previously, a fusion algorithm was given for the case where the local trackers are JPDA filters. Here, a fusion algorithm is presented for the more general case of local N-scan data association filters, of which the JPDA is a special case (N equals 0). The fusion equations consist of a simultaneous updating of the global hypothesis probabilities, and conditional global target state estimates. Two communication schemes between the local trackers and global processor are considered. A unidirectional communication scheme is examined in which the local trackers send the updated hypothesis probabilities and conditional target state estimates to the global processor; the local nodes then continue to track without knowledge of the global estimates. A bidirectional communication scheme is examined in which the local trackers send the updated hypothesis probabilities and conditional target state estimates to the global processor.

Two algorithms were developed to detect linear or quasi-linear feature in images, one using the windowed Radon transform, and the other using the Hough transfrom. Two images from different types of sensors and with different features were processed using the two algorithms, and the results are compared with each other. The algorithm of the Radon transform yielded a reasonable noise reduction, and retained the major linear features. While using the Hough transform, linear feature plots containing different sets of line segments by taking different combinations of thresholds can be obtained.

This paper describes a method for matching specific database records to handwritten text. While a database record contains multiple fields with complete, idealized strings, handwritten text may contain missing fields, misspellings, and abbreviations. Multiple word segmentation hypotheses are used in this method to overcome the spacing difficulties of handwritten text. To avoid the combinatorics of matching all instantiations of the record, including abbreviations and omissions, to all hypothesized word segmentations, a dynamic programming approach is employed. Inputs to the matching module include a binarized line of handwritten text and a set of potential database records. The module determines the best word segmentation, or parse, of the line given a particular record and produces an overall verification score. This module was tested using binarized, handwritten address images captured from a live mail stream. Results of matching the street line images to postal database records are presented.
