In this paper, we present an optical implementation for 1D wavelet processing which is able to represent wavelets defined in the time domain and deliver complex coefficients. The system is the combination of our previously reported Smartt interferometry based wavelet processor and a modified version of VanderLugt filter. Haar wavelet, which requires complex representation in the frequency domain, was used to demonstrate the system operation.

In this paper an approach to evolutionary learning based upon principles of cultural evolution is developed. In this dual-inheritance system, there is an evolving population of trait sequences as well as an associated belief space. The belief space is derived from the behavior of individuals and is used to actively constrain the traits acquired in future populations. Shifts in the representation of the belief space and the population are supported. The approach is used to solve several versions of the BOOLE problem; F6, F11, and F20. The results are compared with other approaches and the advantages of a dual inheritance approach using cultural algorithms is discussed.

Probabilistic data association approaches are described for tracking multiple targets. These approaches employ multiple frames of data in the data association processing. These approaches offer improved performance over Joint Probabilistic Data Association tracking. This improved performance is obtained, however, at the expense of increased processing load. In the algorithms are design parameters that can be selected to adjust to suit a specific application. The concept of retrodicted hypothesis probability is introduced. Retrodicted hypothesis probabilities are used in an effort to better approximate optimal tracking. Some of these algorithms are retrospective in that, as each new frame of sensor data becomes available, earlier tracks are modified and these changes impact subsequent tracks.

These treads have a complex molded design on one side (DESIGN SIDE) and a flat surface on the other side. The inspection of the Design Side of the tread is one of the key operations in the tread fabrication process impacting quality and consistency of the final product. This paper will discuss development of the main optical inspection algorithms utilized in the system design. The algorithms described in this paper were tested in the laboratory prototype of the inspection system and will be implemented in the final production system.

The fast recursive least squares (RLS) algorithms have wide applications in signal processing and control. They are computationally efficient. Thus their stability is of major concern. In this paper, we investigate the error propagation and stability of some typical fast RLS algorithms. Through a random example, we show that a typical conventional fast RLS algorithm is weakly unstable in computing both the residuals and the gain vectors and a QR based algorithm is expected to be weakly stable in computing the residuals but weakly unstable in computing the gain vectors. We propose an error correction scheme for computing the gain vectors.

An integrated inspection system for improving the accuracy of CNC machine tools is proposed. The system described in this paper emphasizes the integration of the on-machine inspection and analysis techniques with the information coming from post-process and on- machine inspection to improve machine performance automatically. algorithms are derived for analyzing the post-process and on-machine inspection data to identify residual systematic errors and relate them to the machine performance. Various data analysis algorithms and techniques are compared. A feature comparison approach is developed to relate the dimensional and form errors of a manufactured workpiece to the systematic machine tool errors. Inverse kinematics technique and statistical methods are used to identify and characterize the contribution of each geometric error component. A self tuning algorithm is also proposed to fine tune the geometric-thermal model.

In this paper we describe a new algorithm for the detection, location, and estimation of damage on a space truss using parameter identification techniques. The concept is to start with a model of the truss which is known to accurately model the healthy truss. This healthy model of the truss is periodically updated using dynamic response data. When damage has occurred, a damage model of the truss is constructed from dynamic response data using an identification algorithm. By comparing the parameters in the truth model with the parameters of the damage model, the damage is detected, located, and the extent of the damage accessed. The algorithm proposed here uses an explicit model of the damage to the truss. This description of the damage allows the algorithm search over a smaller set of possible damage models with attendant increase in performance. In addition to locating the damage, an estimate of the damage is also given. The performance of this algorithm for locating and estimating damage is presented in the form of three example problems including a 44 dof planar truss.

A sensor-to-track assignment algorithm is developed for a multisensor tracking system to track multiple maneuvering targets. These sensors are spatially distributed and track multiple targets at the same time. To maintain track continuity of approaching targets is the keynote of this algorithm. When local sensors disagree on which central track to update with their local tracks, this algorithm provides an effectiveness function to resolve the conflict. When measurements from all sensors are used to update central tracks, this algorithm can select or request measurements from the more effective sensors to track potential maneuvering targets.

In this paper, we propose an error detection and a resynchronization algorithm in the decoding process of VLC and an error concealment technique for MPEG video decoder. A transmission error causes an error propagation in compressed video data, which in turn leads to objectionable degradation in picture quality. In order to minimize the effect of error propagation, we should resynchronize and recover the differentially coded symbols as fast as possible. The proposed algorithm is capable of resynchronizing the VLC until at least the next macroblock. Concerning the error concealment algorithm, more emphasis is laid upon the concealment of erroneous intra mode MBs. The proposed technique shows better performance than any other previous techniques especially in I-pictures and scene change pictures.
