The binding energies of vacancies to copper-vacany clusters in ferritic alloys containing Cu are of great importance as parameters for Object Kinetic Monte Carlo (OKMC) or Rate Equation (RE) models for the prediction of Cu precipitation under irradiation. Copper-vacancy complexes created after irradiation influence the mechanic properties of irradiated steels since they are obstacles to dislocation motion and lead to hardening and embrittlement of the material. The main purpose of this work is to find an efficient computational procedure to perform the calculation of copper-vacancy complex formation energies and corresponding vacancy binding energies in bcc Fe-Cu alloys, in order to calculate a whole matrix of values, from small to large complex sizes.

The correlation and tracking problem for ballistic objects is a major concern for the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI). In this presentation, the use of angular momentum for gating and assignment of reports and tracks of ballistic objects is proposed. The various errors and appropriate statistical tests that could be used on angular momentum to potentially improve the tracking and correlation, multi-track hypothesis and Kalman filters are studied. The investigation is performed in earth centered inertial Cartesian coordinates for position, velocity, and acceleration in tracking, gating, and assignment. A discussion is given of a brief investigation, the theory developed, the results of numerical test, and the conclusions.

The major requirement for hot- and chill-plate designs is that they provide repeatable and uniform process conditions thereby assuring consistent photoresist quality. A collection of feature-based thermal models has been developed to predict temperature-time histories considering plate construction features including chuck heating/cooling methods, sensor placement with a PID control algorithm, and effects due to vacuum grooves, access holes, support pins and edge-gap. These models can be used by designers and process technologists to assess new approaches, optimize current design and set performance specifications.

Miniature spectrometers with desirable properties such as being small in size, light weight and non-fragile provide solutions to a variety of promising application. In this work, through the developed algorithms, a low-cost chip-scale spectrometer is demonstrated in particular for LED spectrum sensing, as the market of LED lights has been booming and low-cost solution for testing and monitoring LEDs spectral characteristics become essential. The developed algorithms are in two forms, namely algebraic approach and training approach. For the algebraic approach, non-negative least square method is reported useful for spectrum reconstruction of narrowband LED spectra. For the training approach, FWHM measurement and peak wavelength measurement, the two major parameters for specifying monotonic LED spectra, are reported with accuracy within 1nm.

The design of sensing and control systems for two-dimensional industrial processes such as paper making, plastic film extrusion and metal rolling, has drawn extensively upon concepts from two-dimensional signal processing and image processing. The performance of two-dimensional control systems is discussed in terms of spatial and dynamic bandwidths and is illustrated by examples from the control of cross-directional variations on a plastic film extrusion line. By relating these bandwidths to the specification of the required quality of the finished film and typical disturbances that enter the process, specifications are developed for the design of the actuators, the sensing system and the control algorithm. It is shown that the current generation of control systems is not suitable for controlling variations over small areas of sheet, but a system which regulates over much smaller areas could be developed using recent developments in sensors and two-dimensional control algorithms. A variety of algorithms utilized in the alignment of segmented telescopes were developed for and implemented on the Keck telescopes in the 1990s. The algorithms associated with the Keck segmented primary mirrors are very similar to those that will be used for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). However, there are alignment or related wavefront measurement tasks associated with the TMT secondary and tertiary mirrors for which the corresponding Keck algorithms either did not exist or are not adequate for TMT. We discuss two particular algorithms associated with the TMT secondary and tertiary mirrors.

In this paper multistage weighted order statistic (MWOS) filters are introduced. With the aid of threshold decomposition, it is shown that any MWOS filter in real domain corresponds to a multistage threshold logic gate, or a multilayer perceptron in binary domain, which can be viewed as another representation of a stack filter. The MWOS filter requires much fewer parameters to represent a stack filter than the truth table of the positive Boolean function. An adaptive filtering algorithm, named as constrained backpropagation (CBP) algorithm, is developed for finding the optimal MWOS filters under the mean absolute error (MAE) criterion. The CBP algorithm is the same as the backpropagation algorithm used in multilayer perceptrons except the positivity of the parameters of MWOS filters, equal to the stacking property of stack filters, is imposed. Simulation results on image restoration are provided to compare the performance of the adaptive MWOS filters and the adaptive stack filters.

The Zaneveld-Wells technique for determining the inherent optical properties of ocean water is based on calculating the angle-integrated moments of the radiant light field at various depths by an inversion algorithm based on the radiative transfer equation. The hypothesis is that N $PLU 1 sensors can be used to obtain N `inherent optical expansion coefficients,' A$-n$/, from which the single scattering albedo and N-1 expansion coefficients of the volume scattering function can be calculated. We have evaluated the performance and limitations of the proposed algorithm. Results from numerical testing indicate that this technique is a promising way to estimate optical properties of some ocean waters, but attempts to estimate too many expansion coefficients give spurious results for the higher-order coefficients in other cases. Recommendations are given for improving the implementation of the algorithm.

In this paper, we present and compare different strategies to minimize the effects of telescope vibrations to the differential piston (OPD) for LINC/NIRVANA at the LBT using an accelerometer feedforward compensation approach. We summarize why this technology is of importance for LINC/NIRVANA, but also for future telescopes and instruments. We outline the estimation problem in general and its specifics at the LBT. Model based estimation and broadband filtering techniques can be used to solve the estimation task, each having its own advantages and disadvantages, which will be discussed. Simulation results and measurements at the LBT are shown to motivate and support our choice of the estimation algorithm for the instrument LINC/NIRVANA. We explain our laboratory setup aimed at imitating the vibration behaviour at the LBT in general, and the M2 as main contributor in particular, and we demonstrate the controller's ability to suppress vibrations in the frequency range of 8 Hz to 60 Hz. In this range, telescope vibrations are the most dominant disturbance to the optical path. For our measurements, we introduce a disturbance time series which has a frequency spectrum comparable to what can be measured at the LBT on a typical night. We show promising experimental results, indicating the ability to suppress differential piston induced by telescope vibrations by a factor of about 5 (RMS), which is significantly better than any currently commissioned system.

A new encoding scheme for motion and approximate scene segmentation in video sequences is described. The proposed segmentation partitions the scene into variable size rectangles that can be encoded efficiently in a data structure known as `a slicing floorplan tree' in VLSI design. The motion in each rectangle is represented by size parameters. We describe experiments comparing the compactness of this encoding to motion encoding in MPEG-1, and its quality to motion estimates obtained by standard computer vision techniques. These experiments establish two facts. (1) The proposed representation is flexible enough to describe motion as accurately as the output produced by the best motion algorithms developed by computer vision researchers. (2) The proposed representation is much more compact than the representation of motion in MPEG-1.
