A general architecture for detecting and analyzing surface defects in aluminum strip is described. Information concerning visual information from the aluminum surface, surface temperature and strip dimensions--profile thickness-is processed jointly by means of an expert system in order to determine the quality level of each aluminum coil produced; control actions over the casting process, derived from this information, are also suggested by an expert system. This paper shows in deep work related to surface image analysis. The data volume to be processed, up to 20 Mbytes/s, has forced up the development of a high parallel architecture for high-speed image processing. A specially suitable lighting system has been developed for enhancing matrical image acquisition from metallic surfaces that includes reflect avoidance as well as uniform incident angle of light along the scanned portion of surface--about 120000 square mm.

Design of materials with extreme thermal expansion using a three-phase topology optimization method

We show how composites with extremal or unusual thermal expansion coefficients can be designed using a numerical topology optimization method. The composites are composed of two different material phases and void. The optimization method is illustrated by designing materials having maximum thermal expansion, zero thermal expansion, and negative thermal expansion. Assuming linear elasticity, it is shown that materials with effective negative thermal expansion coefficients can be obtained by mixing two phases with positive thermal expansion coefficients and void. We also show that there is no mechanistic relationship between negative thermal expansion and negative Poisson's ratio.

In this paper, it is shown that supervised learning can be posed as an optimization problem in which inequality constraints are used to encode the information contained in the training patterns and to specify the degree of accuracy expected from the neural network. Starting from this point, a technique for evaluating the learning capability and optimizing the feature space of a class of higher-order neural networks is developed. The technique gives significant insight into the problem of task learning. It permits establishing whether the structure of the network can effectively learn the training patterns. Should the structure not be appropriate for learning, it indicates which patterns form the minimum set of patterns which cannot be learned with the desired accuracy. Otherwise, it provides a connectivity which produces satisfactory network performance. Furthermore, it identifies those features which can be suppressed from the definition of the feature space without deteriorating network performance. Several examples are presented and results are discussed.

Attention is focused on low-damping-rubber base-isolators. Instead of thinking in terms of intelligent materials, this paper pursues the definition of conditions of behavior which result intelligent in view of a coupling with an active control device (hybrid control). In particular, situations which show a chaotic behavior of the dynamic response to external excitations are promising in terms of control efficiency. The regions of chaotic behavior are identified by evaluation of the corresponding Lyapunov exponents.

There has been much work ih Vibe area of data compression since the fundamental source coding theories were defined by Shannon. ' Most of the work has been done on speech with a growing percent on optical imagery. Only recently has work on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data compression begun to mature. With the high data rate of a typical SAR system, methods for compression have become important. In this paper, we focus on the source coding technique of Vector Quantization (VQ) for use in a SAR imaging environment. Several types of vector quantizers are presented and discussed. It is shown that VQs can achieve a minimum of 2:1 compression on SAR phase history data without any loss of quality.

When a laser beam propagates through the atmosphere, it is subject to corrupting influences including mechanical vibrations, turbulence and tracker limitations. As a result, pointing errors can occur, causing loss of energy or signal at the target. Nukove Scientific Consulting has developed algorithms to estimate these pointing errors from the statistics of the return photons from the target. To prove the feasibility of this approach for real-time estimation, an analysis tool called RHINO was developed by Nukove. Associated with this effort, New Mexico State University developed a laboratory testbed, the ultimate objective being to test the estimation algorithms under controlled conditions and to stream data into RHINO to prove the feasibility of real-time operation. The present paper outlines the description of this testbed and the results obtained through RHINO when the testbed was used to test the estimation approach.

The U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) has recently upgraded the indoor, rail-mounted synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system, RailSAR, to enable collection of large amounts of low-frequency, ultra-wideband (UWB) data. Our intent is to provide a research tool that is capable of emulating airborne SAR configuration and associated data collection geometries against surrogate explosive hazard threat deployments. By having such a capability, ARL's facility will afford a more rapid response to the ever changing improvised characteristics associated with explosive hazards today and in the future. Therefore, upgrades to this RailSAR tool to improve functionality and performance are needed to meet the potential rapid response assessments to be carried out. The new, lighter RailSAR cart puts less strain on the radar positioning hardware and allows the system to move smoothly along a specified portion of the rail. In previous papers, we have presented co-polarized SAR data collected using the ARL RailSAR. Recently, however, researchers at ARL have leveraged this asset to collect polarimetric data against multiple targets. This paper presents the SAR imagery resulting from these experiments and documents characteristics of certain target signatures that should be of interest to developers of automatic target detection (ATD) algorithms.

We present a theory and algorithm for detecting and classifying weak, distributed patterns in network data that provide actionable information with quanti fiable measures of uncertainty. Our work demonstrates the effectiveness of space-time inference on graphs, robust matrix completion, and second order analysis for the detection of distributed patterns that are not discernible at the level of individual nodes. Motivated by the importance of the problem, we are specifically interested in detecting weak patterns in computer networks related to Cyber Situational Awareness. Our focus is on scenarios where the nodes (terminals, routers, servers, etc.) are sensors that provide measurements (of packet rates, user activity, central processing unit usage, et c.) that, when viewed independently, cannot provide a de finitive determination of the underlying pattern, but when fused with data from across the network both spatially and temporally, the relevant patterns emerge. The approach is applicable to many types of sensor networks including computer networks, wireless networks, mobile sensor networks, and social networks, as well as in contexts such as databases and disease outbreaks.

An algorithm has been developed to control the antenna array beam pattern for multiple beam antenna (MBA) or phased array systems. The algorithm is motivated by military satellite communications applications where the uplink received antenna is desired to provide beamforming capability for selective earth coverage and jamming protection. The problem can be formulated as to determine the control weight to meet the user gain and jammer null requirements in their known directions subject to the norm constraint of the weight defined by the power conservation law. The algorithm makes use of an orthogonal decomposition of the weight vector into the constraint weight vector and the zero-output weight vector. If the constraint weight vector satisfies the norm bound constraint, the zero-output vector can further be optimized to minimize the deviation of the resulting weight from the quiescent weight. If the constraint weight vector does not satisfy the norm bound constraint, a recursive procedure has been developed which provides flexibility in the determination of the constraint vectors, the constraint order and the constraint phase optimization. This algorithm provides a practical means to achieve the constraints subject to the norm bound condition.

When taking pictures, professional photographers apply photographic composition rules, e.g. rule of thirds. The rule of thirds says to place the main subject's center at one of four places: at 1/3 or 2/3 of the picture width from left edge, and 1/3 or 2/3 of the picture height from the top edge. This paper develops low-complexity unsupervised methods for digital still cameras to (1) segment the main subject and (2) realize the rule-of-thirds. The main subject segmentation method uses the auto-focus filter, opens the shutter aperture fully, and segments the resulting image. These camera settings place the main subject in focus and blur the rest of the image by diffused light. The segmentation utilizes the difference in frequency content between the main subject and blurred background. The segmentation does not depend on prior knowledge of the indoor/outdoor setting or scene content. The rule-of-thirds method moves the centroid of the main subject to the closest of the four rule-of-thirds locations. We first define an objective function that measures how close the main subject placement obeys the rule-of-thirds, and then reposition the main subject in order to optimize the objective function. For multiple main subjects, the proposed algorithm could be extended to use rule-of-triangles by adding an appropriate constraint.
