We discuss and present preliminary results about an algorithm which is trained to locate objects in images. The algorithm determines the parameters for a generalized Hough transform based on training images. Our training images consist of binary edge images from noisy imagery and identified points and boundaries for the objects being located in this imagery. The resulting generalized Hough transform will find objects of the same type at a wide variety of scales and any orientation present in the training data.

We have implemented several algorithms for hologram generation, aimed for holographic optical tweezers applications, using the parallel computing architecture CUDA. We compare required computation time for different implementations of the Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm and provide guidelines for choosing the best suited version with respect to the application. We also show that additional calculations, compensating for limitations in the used spatial light modulator and optical system, can be included in the hologram generating software with little or no loss in computational speed.

NOAA produces operational sea surface temperature (SST) data products from two VIIRS sensors, flown onboard NPP (launched in Oct 2011) and NOAA-20 (N20, aka. JPSS-1 prior to launch;launched in Nov 2017). These first two satellites in the US new generation Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) series will be followed by JPSS-2 to -4, planned for launch in 2022, 2026, and 2031, respectively. The goal of VIIRS SST Reanalyses (RANs) is to generate stable, accurate and consistent data products, which currently include Level 2P (L2P;swath projection;26 Gb/day) and gridded 0.02 degrees L3U (0.45 Gb/day). The RAN comprises multiples steps, including 1) RDR-to-SDR conversion, i.e., reprocessing of all available VIIRS L0 ("Raw Data Records", RDRs) into improved L1b ("Sensor Data Records", SDRs), using latest and most accurate sensor calibration, 2) pre-processing, which includes destriping the radiances, resampling VIIRS imagery (to minimize the effect of bow-tie deletions and distortions), and aggregating original 86-sec granules into 10-min SDR granules;3) feeding those into the latest NOAA Advanced Clear-Sky Processor for Oceans (ACSPO) enterprise SST code (currently, version 2.61), and producing L2P;4) gridding L2P data and producing L3U;5) matching L2P/3U data with several accurate Level 4 (L4) analyses, and with quality controlled in situ SSTs from the NOAA in situ SST Quality Monitor, iQuam, system;6) calculation of the corresponding performance statistics - global daily mean biases and standard deviations, SDs, of various paired SST differences,.Ts, stratified by day and night, and displaying them in the NOAA SST Quality Monitor (SQUAM) web-based system;6) generation of SST imagery over similar to 30 regional targets and routine monitoring in another NOAA system, ACSPO Regional Monitor for SST (ARMS);7) calculation of brightness temperature (BT) differences between measured BTs and those simulated using the fast Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM), as a part of AC

High resolution in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) could be achieved by the convolution of the received signal with the reference function. The right selection of the reference function is necessary to obtain high accuracy in this processing. The reference function of the azimuth processing is characterized by two parameters: the central Doppler frequency and the speed of the azimuth signal frequency modulation. The principles of the proposed algorithms are discussed in this report. These algorithms are intended for more precise estimation of the reference function parameters; they utilize received realization of the reflected signal.

This paper presents a general methodology for the development of fuzzy algorithms for learning vector quantization (FALVQ). These algorithms can be used to train feature maps to perform pattern clustering through an unsupervised learning process. The development of FALVQ algorithms is based on the minimization of a fuzzy objective function, formed as the weighted sum of the squared Euclidean distances between an input vector, which represents a feature vector, and the weight vectors of the map, which represent the prototypes. This formulation leads to the development of genuinely competitive algorithms, which allow all prototypes to compete for matching each input. The FALVQ 1, FALVQ 2, and FALVQ 3 families of algorithms are developed by selecting admissible generalized membership functions with different properties. The efficiency of the proposed algorithms is illustrated by their use in codebook design required for image compression based on vector quantization.

The superiority of iterative reconstruction techniques over analytical ones is documented in a variety of CT imaging applications. However, iterative reconstruction techniques generally require a substantial increase in data processing time and required resources, slowing adoption of the state of the art. This problem is exacerbated in multi-channel CT reconstruction problems (e.g. dynamic and spectral CT) where the gap between the amount of data acquired and to be reconstructed is often exaggerated. To facilitate adoption of iterative reconstruction techniques, we propose methods which seek to improve data efficiency. Specifically, we define data-efficient methods as those that produce reliable results with respect to task-specific metrics while managing the total x-ray exposure, sampling time, computation time, and computational resources required. The development of such methods unifies several themes in CT research, including dose management, task-based optimization, clinically relevant timelines for data processing, and reconstruction from undersampled data. In this paper, we present complementary, data-efficient methods for cardiac CT reconstruction. We present a reconstruction algorithm which requires minimal parameter tuning to solve temporal reconstruction problems. The algorithm exploits spatially localized, voxel-centric, distance-driven projection and backprojection operators to promote computational efficiency. We validate the algorithm with numerical simulations, using the MOBY mouse phantom, and with in vivo mouse data. For the in vivo data, localized reconstruction reduces computation time by 50% and system RAM requirements by 60% relative to non-localized reconstruction. Following validation of our algorithm, we present preliminary in vivo temporal denoising results, using a convolutional neural network, which promise to further improve the fidelity and speed of our reconstructions in future work.

A quantum computer directly manipulates information stored in the state of quantum mechanical systems. The available operations have many attractive features but also underly severe restrictions, which complicate the design of quantum algorithms. We present a divide-and-conquer approach to the design of various quantum algorithms. The class of algorithm includes many transforms which are well-known in classical signal processing applications. We show how fast quantum algorithms can be derived for the discrete Fourier transform, the Walsh-Hadamard transform, the Slant transform, and the Hartley transform. All these algorithms use at most O(log(2) N) operations to transform a state vector of a quantum computer of length N.

Discontinuities in a noisy image can be detected by thresholding a differentiator adapted to the general spatial quality of the image. This paper develops a simple "blind" algorithm which can be used on the resulting binary map to locate edges. The data is first subjected to a thinning operation and the map is processed to yield clusters of points which are best represented by straight lines. It is not necessary to identify the subsets, and the algorithm is therefore highly independent of operator interaction. A mathematical basis for the technique and several examples are presented. © 1979 SPIE. All rights reserved.

The problem of digitally reconstructing the image of the internal structure of an object from measurements of its two dimension-al projections, resulting from transmission of radiation through the object, has been of interest in mathematics, radio-astronomy, and biological sciences for over 50 years. About four years ago this problem suddenly assumed major importance in medical engineering after Houncefield and his associates announced the development of a sophisticated computerized x-ray scanning system capable of reconstructing cross-sectional images (tomograms) of the human head with high tissue-density discrimi-nation capability [23]. This development was heralded as a major breakthrough in diagnostic radiology because it, for the first time, permitted non-invasive visualization of the ventricles of the brain, as well as a large class of brain tumors and injuries. More recent research has demonstrated the success of this type of imaging with other parts of the human body.

Bonded composite repairs for the reinforcement of damaged aircraft structures are effective in extending the life of aging airframes. The structural integrity of the composite patch repair in terms of disbond, fracture at the bond-lines, delamination, and structural crack growth is to be investigated before the composite repair technology can be adopted by the aerospace industry. We have developed structural health monitoring techniques for locating, identifying, and quantifying damages using the changes in the dynamical response of the repaired structure. A signal-based health monitoring algorithms wavelet transforms, have been developed for monitoring the structural integrity of composite patches, which detects variations induced by small changes in the vibration signature of the repaired structure. In this paper, threshold wavelet maps and neural networks have been integrated to detect and quantify the damage (s) in the composite patch repairs. Neural networks are utilized to find the extent of the damage. This method is also capable of detecting multiple damages. The mode shapes are obtained analytically using finite element analysis and experimentally with laser vibrometer. We have also developed a wireless data acquisition system for collection, feature extraction, and transmission of vibration data. The results of the damage location and extent estimation in the composite patch repairs are satisfactory.
