Northwest Nuclear, LLC (NWN), the Applied Physics Institute (APT) at Western Kentucky University, and Crisis Prep Services, LLC (CPS) have developed a tracking technology for first responders and security personnel based upon the AeroScout (TM) system (a product of AeroScout, Inc.) and technologies developed independently by NWN, APT, and CPS. These systems provide location information using 802.11XXX architecture by measuring the time of arrival of packets from a set of active radio frequency (RF) tags to a set of location receivers. The system can track and graphically display the location on maps, drawings, floor plans or photographs of tagged items on any 802.11-compliant devices (PDAs, laptops, computers, WiFi telephones) situated both outside and inside structures. This location information would be vital for tracking the location of first responders, security, and other emergency personnel during rescue operations;particularly, under adverse conditions (e.g., fires). NWN, APT, and CPS have been improving the precision of the location measurement to an uncertainty of 20 cm or 8 inches (under certain conditions) and also developing algorithms to increase the accuracy. NWN and APT personnel have developed: 1) special tags which indicate tampering or sudden movement and transmit briefly under these conditions, and 2) permanent and portable systems which can be deployed rapidly. Additional software created by Crisis Prep Services, LLC allows response force personnel to be tracked and located inside a building in real time as well as use the software and tags as a training and rehersal system. The location of each person is depicted on a drawing of the building and is displayed on a laptop computer or any other browser capable device.

The ability to design an algorithm is one of the most important learning outcomes of a computer science program. Unfortunately, not only is learning how to design algorithms a challenging task, but many students believe that algorithm design is not an important part of problem solving. To address this challenge and hopefully change student attitudes, we developed AlgoTutor, a web-based algorithm development tutoring system. AlgoTutor's primary components are the algorithm composer and the algorithm tracer. A third component, ProgramPad, was added to show the connection between algorithms and code. This paper presents the results of experiments that assessed AlgoTutor's effectiveness in changing student attitudes about algorithm development. The results show that students who used AlgoTutor in CS-I were more likely to realize the importance of algorithm design in problem solving and to have confidence in their own algorithm development abilities.

We validate a non-contact Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS) system as a first stage to approach quantitative multi-spectral imaging technique. The non-contact DRS system with separated illumination and detection paths was developed with different progressive set-ups which were all compared to a well-founded contact DRS system. While quantitation of the absorption coefficient is well achieved with the existing method, the calculation of the scattering coefficient is deteriorated by the non-contact architecture measurements. We have therefore developed an adaptive reference-based algorithm to compensate for this effect.

DRAGON is a high order, wide field AO test-bench at Durham. A key feature of DRAGON is the ability to be operated at real-time rates, i.e. frame rates of up to 1kHz, with low latency to maintain AO performance. Here, we will present the real-time control architecture for DRAGON, which includes two deformable mirrors, eight wavefront sensors and thousands of Shack-Hartmann sub-apertures. A novel approach has been taken to allow access to the wavefront sensor pixel stream, reducing latency and peak computational load, and this technique can be implemented for other similar wavefront sensor cameras with no hardware costs. We report on experience with an ELT-suitable wavefront sensor camera. DRAGON will form the basis for investigations into hardware acceleration architectures for AO real-time control, and recent work on GPU and many-core systems (including the Xeon Phi) will be reported. Additionally, the modular structure of DRAGON, its remote control capabilities, distribution of AO telemetry data, and the software concepts and architecture will be reported. Techniques used in DRAGON for pixel processing, slope calculation and wavefront reconstruction will be presented. This will include methods to handle changes in CN2 profile and sodium layer profile, both of which can be modelled in DRAGON. DRAGON software simulation techniques linking hardware-in-the-loop computer models to the DRAGON real-time system and control software will also be discussed. This tool allows testing of the DRAGON system without requiring physical hardware and serves as a test-bed for ELT integration and verification techniques.

In many application areas of imaging sciences, object information captured in multi-dimensional images needs to be extracted, visualized, manipulated, and analyzed. These four groups of operations have been (and are being) intensively investigated, developed, and applied in a variety of applications. In this paper, after giving a brief overview of the four groups of operations, we put forth two main arguments: (1) Computers are digital, and most image acquisition and communication efforts at present are toward digital approaches. In the same vein, there are considerable advantages to taking an inherently digital approach to the above four groups of operations rather than using concepts based on continuous approximations. (2) Considering the fact that images are inherently fuzzy. to handle uncertainties and heterogeneity of object properties realistically, approaches based on fuzzy sets should be taken to the above four groups of operations. We give two examples in support of these arguments.

Many error resilience techniques have been proposed to improve the MPEG-4 coding performance. However, most of them can hardly detect and correct errors occurring in headers, motion vectors and macroblock mode data. MPEG-4/XML was introduced in our previous work to protect the important information of video against error corruption. However, the overhead of a straightforward XML description can be high. In this work, we develop an efficient XML compression algorithm to reduce the MPEG-4/XML file size. Furthermore, we present a XML-based MPEG-4 error resilience technique performed at the macroblock level. Experimental results are given to demonstrate the performance of the proposed MPEG-4/XML coding technique.

This paper presents a new method for estimating motion parameters of a set of 3-D points without correspondences between points at two time instants. All point coordinates are given in projections. Three scaled orthographic projections taken before and after the motion are used to determine the scaled translation vector and to recover the 3-D scatter matrix. Once the 3-D scatter matrix is determined at two time instants, we can find the rotation matrix using eigenvector decomposition method. The proposed method requires neither correspondences in projections nor correspondences between two time instants.

The relative degradation in time of the visible(channel 1: 0.58-0.68jim) and nearinfrared(channel 2: ***) channels of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer(AVHRR), onboard the NOAA polar-orbiting operational environmental satellites(POES), has been determined, *** the southeastern Libyan desert(21-23°N latitude; 2829° E longitude) as a time-invariant calibration target. A statistical procedure was used on the reflectance data for the two channels from the B3 data of the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project(ISCCP) to obtain the degradation rates for the AVHRRs on NOAA-7, -9, and -11 spacecraft. The degradation rates per year for channels 1 and 2 are respectively: 3.6% and 4.3%(NOAA-7); 5.9% and 3.5%(NOAA-9); and 1.2% and 2.0%(NOAA-11). The use of the degradation rates thus determined, in conjunction with t1absolute" calibrations obtained from congruent aircraft and satellite measurements, in the development of correction algorithms is illustrated with the AVHRR on the NOAA-9 spacecraft.
