Imaging Applications in the Work World 1988

Over the past several years, the Electronic Publishing Group at the MIT Media Laboratory has been conducting a family of media experiments which explore a new kind of broadcast: the distribution of data and computer programs rather than pre-packaged material. This broadcast is not directed to a human recipient, but to a local computational agent acting on his behalf. In response to instructions from both the broadcaster and the reader, this agent selects from the incoming data and presents it in a manner suggestive of traditional media. The embodiment of these media experiments is a news retrieval system where the news editor has been replaced by the personal computer. A variety of both local and remote databases which operate passively as well as interac-tively are accessed by "reporters." These "reporters" are actually software interfaces, which are programmed to gather news. Ideally, they are "broadcatching"; that is to say, watching all broadcast television channels, listening to all radio transmissions, and reading all newspapers, magazines, and journals. 1 A possible consequence of the synthesis of media through active processing is the merger of newspapers and television (figure 1). The result is either a newspaper with illustrations which move 2 or, conversely, print as television output. The latter is the theme of Network Plus.

In this paper, we introduce a cost function driven GAOPC(Genetic algorithm based Optical Proximity Correction) method for automatic OPC job tuning. Instead of manual review and judgement, the customized cost function is defined in advance to regulate GA convergence direction. Meanwhile, a real time Convergence Check Module is introduced to monitor the running status of GAOPC job. A real product case’s evaluation result shows GAOPC has better performance than baseline with 38% less RMS(worst EP value) and around 82% cycle time reduction. Combined with Convergence Check Module, 31% more cycle time can be saved further. © 2024 SPIE.

The proposed one-shot algorithm requires only first- and second-order image derivatives in local neighborhoods to detect multiple orientations and to classify L-, T-, X-junctions. This algorithm has two stages. The first stage detects multiple orientations with a parametrized filter based on the principle of superposition, and the second stage classifies L-, T-, X-junctions with first-order image derivatives in local areas in order to evaluate the borders. The computational cost is therefore low, and the method is robust against noise. The algorithm provided successful results for artificial images and real images.

Hadamard matrices have received much attention in recent years, owing to their numerous known and promising applications. The difficulties of construction of N equivalent to 0(mod4)-point Hadamard transforms are related to the existence of Hadamard matrices problem. In this paper algorithms for fast computation of N-point Williamson-Hadamard transform based on multiplicative theorems are presented. Comparative estimates revealing the efficiency of the proposed algorithms with respect to the known ones are given. The results of numerical examples are presented.

This paper describes the realtime image processing features in the Xerox DocuTech document processing system. The image processing features offered include image enhancement, halftone screen removal (de-screening) with an FIR low pass filter, and an image segmentation algorithm developed by Xerox, which can be used for documents with text and high frequency halftone images, such as pages from typical magazines. The image segmentation algorithm uses a modified auto correlation function approach to detect halftone areas on the document. With this set of image processing features, it is possible to handle a wide variety of input documents on the scanner, and generate high quality output prints.

We present a technique for interferometrically testing aspherical surfaces without the use of compensating elements. The method consists of recording successive overlapping phase maps from a set of annular interferograms of an aspherical surface, obtained using a conventional phase-shifting interferometer and a micropositioning translator stage. These maps are then sewn together with a suitable algorithm we have developed, and the whole surface error is recovered. Experimental results are shown to be in good agreement with the null lens test performed for comparison.

Three-dimensional (3D) medical imaging deals with the visualization, manipulation, and measuring of objects in 3D medical images. So far, research efforts have concentrated primarily on visualization, using well-developed methods from computer graphics. Very little has been achieved in developing techniques for manipulating medical objects, or for extracting quantitative measurements from them beyond volume calculation (by counting voxels), and computing distances and angles between manually located surface points. A major reason for the slow pace in the development of manipulation and quantification methods lies with the limitations of current algorithms for constructing surfaces from 3D solid objects. We show that current surface construction algorithms either (a) do not construct valid surface descriptions of solid objects or (b) produce surface representations that are not particularly suitable for anything other than visualization. We present ALLIGATOR, a new surface construction algorithm that produces valid, topologically connected surface representations of solid objects. We have developed a modeling system based on the surface representations created by ALLIGATOR that is suitable for developing algorithms to visualize, manipulate, and quantify 3D medical objects. Using this modeling system we have developed a method for efficiently computing principle curvatures and directions on surfaces. These measurements form the basis for a new metric system being developed for morphometrics. The modeling system is also being used in the development of systems for quantitative pre-surgical planning and surgical augmentation.

The HK-Filter previously developed by the authors is a statistical filter devoted to the speckle removal and structural features enhancement on SAR images. As this filter is based on a pattern analysis applied to the shape observed in a given neighborhood and according to a gray-level range, it can be used to extract structural features. We purpose here to use spatial arrangement given by the occurrence of the constitutive elements of shapes, to extract and to differentiate the different structural features encountered on SAR images.

We examine a smugglers and border guards scenario. We place observers on a terrain so as to optimize their visible coverage area. Then we compute a path that a smuggler would take so as to avoid detection., while also minimizing the path length. We also examine how our results are affected by using a lossy representation of the terrain instead. We propose three new application-specific error metrics for evaluating terrain compression. Our target terrain applications are the optimal placement of observers on a landscape and the navigation through the terrain by smuglers. Instead of using standard metrics such as average or maximum elevation error, we seek to optimize our compression on the specific real-world application of smugglers and border guards.
