We discuss and present preliminary results about an algorithm which is trained to locate objects in images. The algorithm determines the parameters for a generalized Hough transform based on training images. Our training images consist of binary edge images from noisy imagery and identified points and boundaries for the objects being located in this imagery. The resulting generalized Hough transform will find objects of the same type at a wide variety of scales and any orientation present in the training data.

Tuned Liquid Dampers (TLD) are used to limit horizontal vibrations in structures, and offer practical alternatives to Tuned Mass Dampers (TMD). However, to our knowledge, liquid damping systems have not been developed to reduce vertical vibrations. In this work, we develop a model for a Vertical Motion Liquid Damper (VMLD), idealized as a discrete, two degree of freedom system. One degree of freedom represents the 'target' structure that is to be damped, and the other represents the approximate, one-dimensional motion of a liquid in a U-shaped tube. Internal losses due to the fluid oscillation serve to limit and control motions of the target structure. The U-shaped tube has a flexible joint such that one vertical portion and the horizontal portion of the tube remain fixed, and the remaining vertical portion of the tube is affixed to the vibrating structure, allowing the liquid to become excited. The equations of motion are derived using Lagrange's Equations, and are integrated using Runge-Kutta algorithms that are available in Matlab. An experimental model was built in the laboratory, consisting of a mass attached to the end of a cantilevered beam (corresponding to the target structure), and a U-tube made from PVC pipe. The various damping and stiffness parameters of the system were calibrated independently based on experimental data. Measured data from the experimental model show reasonable agreement with numerical simulations.

The development and evaluation of multi-source, multi-spectral, all-aspect airborne target identification algorithms has been proven to be cumbersome as well as disjointed. The algorithm development capability under this testbed concept encompasses model-based reasoning, information fusion, airborne target identification, and target/sensor phenomenology analysis. The evaluation capability assembles multiple sensor and target types coupled with all aspect viewing in an operationally representative air-to-air environment. The importance of developing better techniques for establishing positive target identification for beyond visual ranges has increased in tactical importance, as a result of the Persian Gulf War. In addition to supporting the evaluation of algorithms and associated sensors, this testbed will support on- going R&D in the Air-To-Air Non-Cooperative Target Recognition (NCTR) arena.

A new approach for signal extrapolation based on wavelet representation known as scale-time limited extrapolation and a denoising process is investigated in this research. We first examine a new signal modeling technique using wavelets and the corresponding scale-time limited signal extrapolation algorithm. Then, the sensitivity of the algorithm to noise is discussed, and a denoising algorithm based on the time-localization property of the wavelet transform is proposed. By integrating the denoising process and the iterative scale-time limited extrapolation algorithm, we obtain a very robust signal extrapolation algorithm for noisy data. A simulation result of signal extrapolation from noisy observed data is presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed robust signal extrapolation algorithm.

As part of the Alaska SAR Facility (ASF) at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, the Geophysical Processor System (GPS) will produce ice and ocean geophysical products from the ERS-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system, including maps of ice type, concentration, motion, and surface waves. The current status of and improvements to the ice classification algorithm design and implementation are discussed. The algorithm is seasonally dependent. It has been designed to function most accurately during the winter season from about November to May in the Arctic. The winter ice conditions are better understood than the more complicated transition seasons, and this is especially true for radar scattering from ice since it is dependent on the presence of water in the snow cover and the ice. The classification algorithm will not be implemented if the air temperature determined from meteorlogical analyses, is greater than -5°C over the region of the SAR imagery. It is expected that this limitation will be improved by the incorporation of additional lookup tables by season and region.

As part of its small satellite R&D activities, Spar Aerospace Limited is studying the applicability of onboard real-time data compression to solve some problems of data storage onboard small satellites and of data delivery to remote users. To fulfill this goal, a collaboration was established with the University of Surrey Spacecraft Engineering Unit to test Spar's compression code on UoSAT-5 EIS images and have it ultimately executed onboard UoSAT-5. Image compression of the UoSAT-5 remote sensing data has been achieved by a number of algorithms including lossy methods such as the `discrete cosine transform' (DCT) related to the JPEG standard, the `block truncation' (BT), the `vector quantization (VQ) as well as lossless compression methods.

Sidescan sonar is increasingly accepted as the sensor of choice for sea minehunting over large areas in shallow water. Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) algorithms are therefore being developed to assist and, in the case of autonomous vehicles, even replace the human operator as the primary recognition agent deciding whether an object in the sonar imagery is a mine or simply benign seafloor clutter. Whether ATR aids or replaces a human operator, a natural benchmark for judging the quality of ATR is the unaided human performance when ATR is not used. The benchmark can help when estimating the performance benefit (or cost) of switching from human to automatic recognition for instance, or when planning how human and machine should best interact in cooperative search operations. This paper reports a human performance study using a large library of real sonar images collected for the development and testing of ATR algorithms. The library features 234 mine-like man-made objects deployed for the purpose, as well as 105 instances of naturally occurring clutter. The human benchmark in this case is the average of ten human subjects expressed in terms of a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. An ATR algorithm for man-made/natural object discrimination is also tested and compared with the human benchmark. The implications of its relative performance for the integration of ATR are considered.

Foliage penetration is a major application of airborne lidar systems. Typical ground resolutions achieved for floodplain-mapping applications are of the order of meters. Much higher a ground resolution can be achieved by integrating multiple looks from several look-angles. This paper describes a new system that can achieve very high ground sampling densities in forested environments at significant altitudes (6 kft) using a modified commercial lidar and a custom gimbal system. Absolute calibration of the gimbal system demonstrated pointing knowledge comparable to the usual aircraft-fixed lidar performance (0.1-0.2 mrad). Bare-earth processing of the resultant data enables interactive virtual deforestation relative to a high-resolution ground.

The nonlinear nature of the family of fast RLSL algorithms has hindered the study of the numerical properties from a general framework. As more and more applications for these types of fast filters have been realized, the numeric properties have become an essential part of algorithm and hardware development. Most work in the past has been algorithm specific, drawing from a stochastic or a numerical analysis viewpoint. We discuss the numeric behavior of errors propagating between successive filter stages in time and discuss satisfactory conditions which guarantee a stable solution.

We describe a methodology for evaluating algorithms to provide quantitative information about how well road detection and road following algorithms perform. The approach relies on generating a set of standard data sets annotated with ground truth. We evaluate the algorithms used to detect roads by comparing the output of the algorithms with ground truth, which we obtain by having humans annotate the data sets used to test the algorithms. Ground truth annotations are acquired from more than one person to reduce systematic errors. Results are quantified by looking at false positive and false negative regions of the image sequences when compared with the ground truth. We describe the evaluation of a number of variants of a road detection system based on neural networks.
