The request of pattern recognition has been frequently brought up by both mask and wafer engineers. Despite of different intentions, pattern recognition is usually the first step of many applications and hence plays a major role to accomplish certain tasks. For the purpose of this work, pattern recognition is defined as searching a specific polygon or a group of particular patterns from a chip layout. Operator scan is truly not an efficient approach of pattern recognition, in particular, for cases with huge design database of advanced semiconductor integrated circuits. Obviously, an automation system of pattern recognition is necessary and benefits the data preparation process. Two categories of pattern recognition are discussed in the present study, "fuzzy search" and "exact match." Each category has its own application, but the searching algorithms could be much different. Details of searching algorithms are given for both categories of pattern recognition. Due to the nature of industrial standard, the scope of the present application is limited to database with GDSII format. Hence, coordinate searching is internally used inside the searching engine.

The demand for remote sensing data has increased dramatically mainly due to the large number of possible applications capable to exploit remotely sensed data and images. As in many other fields, along with the increase of market potential and product diffusion, the need arises for some sort of protection of the image products from unauthorized use. Such a need is a very crucial one even because the Internet and other public/private networks have become preferred and effective means of data exchange. An important issue arising when dealing with digital image distribution is copyright protection. Such a problem has been largely addressed by resorting to watermarking technology. Before applying watermarking techniques developed for multimedia applications to remote sensing applications, it is important that the requirements imposed by remote sensing imagery are carefully analyzed to investigate whether they are compatible with existing watermarking techniques. On the basis of these motivations, the contribution of this work is twofold: i) assessment of the requirements imposed by the characteristics of remotely sensed images on watermark-based copyright protection;ii) discussion of a case study where the performance of two popular, state-of-the-art watermarking techniques are evaluated by the light of the requirements at the previous point.

The quantitative characteristics of process of excitation and development of turbulence in the mixing zone between the non-reacted hydrogen-oxygen mixture (molecular weight mu (B) = 18.5) and inert gases (molecular weight mu (A) > mu (B) and mu (A) < mu (B)) were under the investigation. The accelerated motion (g similar to 10(7) cm/s(2)) is created by compression waves generated by a flame front, expanding in a combustible mixture. The experimental study includes definition of the mixing zone evolution during its motion along the channel with acceleration and subsequent deceleration. One - dimensional (1D) flow excited by front of flame in the closed channel was examined in theoretical study and in calculations.

Computer recognition and inspection of objects is, in general , a complex procedure requiring a variety of kinds of steps which successively transform the iconic data to recognition information. We hypothesize that the difficulty of today's computer vision and recognition technology to be able to handle unconstrained environments is due to the fact that the existing algorithms are specialized and do not develop one or more of the necessary steps to a high enough degree. Our thesis is that there are no shortcuts. A recognition methodology must pay substantial attention to each of the following five steps: conditioning, labeling, grouping, extracting, and matching.

Different points of view which have been used by lens designers who have written automatic lens design programs are reviewed with emphasis on the idea that some points of view are relatively more productive of useful concepts for the lens optimization problem. Simplification of the linearized problem by linear transformations of the construction variable set and the defect set is discussed. With simplified linear equations some aspects of the nonlinear problem become more obvious, in particular, a separation of the problem into two parts is revealed which is important to the develop-ment of efficient algorithms.

An algorithm for the robust and fast automatic construction of a 3D model of any real object using images from multiple views is presented. The images are taken from a real object rotating in front of a stationary calibrated CCD TV camera. The object silhouettes extracted from the input images, the related turntable positions, and camera orientation are used to construct the volume model of the real object by applying the method of occluding contours. A keypoint in performing this method is a proper volume representation, characterized by low complexity and suitability for a fast computation of volume models. In the presented approach, each volume model is described by pillar-like volume elements (pillars) ensuring a computational complexity proportional to the size of the real object surface and enabling a fast and simple construction of the volume model. The fast performance is due to the simple projection feasibility of those pillars and the easy-to-perform intersection test for the object silhouette with the projected pillars. Results with real image sequences have confirmed the robustness of the developed algorithm even for the modelling of real objects with highly detailed and complex surfaces and the use of imperfect object silhouettes.

Shortest path network algorithms have been applied to geophysical raytracing by Nakanishi and Yamaguchi and Moser. In the present work two new algorithms are introduced which further exploit the special structure of network models as applied to geological structures. The algorithm differs in the scanning order of network blocks in a processing queue. An early version of this concept, with computed examples was given. Mathematical correctness of both algorithms, `block-greedy' and `block-breadth', is established. It is then shown that block- greedy limits the updating cycles per block but is inherently sequential whereas block-breadth may incur back-tracking but allows parallel execution. Shared memory architectures allow block level parallelization with guided self-scheduling on a global queue. Message-passing architectures allow direct parallel counterparts to sequential breadth-first execution.

A recent research and development effort at Emerson Electric's Electronics and Space Division has been concerned with the development of a new type of modular reconfigurable signal processor called the Distributed Signal Processor (DSP). Such a processor would be capable of processing several different types of sensors simultaneously by operating in a multiple instruction, multiple data stream (MIMD) mode. This MIMD architecture would allow for the development of both general purpose and highly algorithm-specific processor modules which could be coupled together in varying numbers depending on the processing requirements. In addition, the processors should be dynamically reconfigurable to allow a degree of flexibility in the processor as the mission needs change and to provide a measure of fault tolerance.

Resource allocation problems arise in application domains such as logistics, networking, manufacturing, and (CI)-I-4 systems. The discrete nature of resources to be allocated makes such problems combinatorially complex. In addition, uncertainties in the times when resources are requested and relinquished introduce additional complexities often necessitating the use of simulation for modeling and analysis purposes. In this paper, we present two approaches for solving such problems, the first based on ordinal optimization and the second on the idea of replacing the original discrete allocation problem by a "surrogate model" involving a continuous allocation problem. The latter is simpler to solve through gradient-based techniques and can be shown to recover the solutions of the original problem. Concurrent simulation is used to estimate the gradients required in this approach, leading to extremely fast solutions for many problems in practice.

Several methods have been formulated for reconstructing the density (image) from a set of its projections. For a review of methods, see Gordon and Herman and Budinger and Gullberg. Some of the algebraic methods are known to optimize certain properties of the reconstructions. For instance, the least-squares solution gives an estimate of the image density such that the discrepancy between the given projection data and the projection data corresponding to the reconstructed picture is a minimum.
