The new pattern inspection algorithm we developed detects fatal defects on printed wiring boards. The algorithm determines whether patterns identified by an automated pattern inspection (AOI) system are actually defective by considering the electrical malfunction that the defect will cause. A macroscopic model based on the pattern design rules and their tolerances to pattern violations is needed to evaluate defects. The algorithm classifies features around a defective pattern into 50 categories and compares the defect distribution with preset check rules. The automated optical verification system we developed captures pattern images with a CCD camera and uses verification software to evaluate defects. The process takes 10 seconds per image. We tested the system on the factory floor, and it detected all defects with less than 4.8 percent of false alarms.

This paper acknowledges that digital image processing systems no longer are limited to pure research or prototype status, but rather are cost-effective, accurate and efficient enough to have become a category of quasi-standard instrumentation in the fields of diag-nostic medical imaging, visual inspection, remote sensing, geophysics, data encoding and decoding, and other fields. A new architectural concept incorporates the most recent ad-vances in microprocessor technology: high-speed, specialized processors, often with local intelligence; large-scale direct-mapped memory; and multiple-bus and multitasking capabilities within a stand-alone device. This architecture is described as an alternative to the traditional configurations in which digital image generators, CPU, memory, special processors and peripherals exist as "cable-length" devices. Furthermore, specialized image processing algorithms which have been developed as a direct response to specific require-ments in various fields of applications not only are highly compatible with this architecture, but have contributed significantly to its development.

Optimal translation-invariant binary windowed filters are determined by probabilities of the form P(Y = 1|x), where x is a vector (template) of observed values in the observation window and Y is the value in the image to be estimated by the filter. The optimal window filter is defined by y(x) = 1 if P(Y = 1|x) > 0.5 and y(x) = 0 if P(Y = 1|x) 0.5, which is the binary conditional expectation. The fundamental problem of filter design is to estimate P(Y 1|x) from data (image realizations), where x ranges over all possible observation vectors in the window. A Bayesian approach to the problem can be employed by assuming, for each x, a prior distribution for P(Y = 1|x). These prior distributions result from considering a range of model states by which the observed images are obtained from the ideal. Instead of estimating P(Y = 1|x) directly from observations by its sample mean relative to an image sample, P(Y = 1|x) is estimated in the Bayesian fashion, its Bayes estimator being the conditional expectation of P(Y = 1|x) given the data. Recently the authors have shown that, with accurate prior information, the Bayesian multiresolution filter has significant benefits from multiresolution filter design. Further, since the Bayesian filter is trained over a wider range of degradation levels, it inherits the added benefit of filtering a degraded image at different degradation levels in addition permitting iterative filtering. We discuss the necessary conditions that make a binary filter a good iterative filter and show that the Bayesian multiresolution filter is a natural candidate. The basic idea behind Bayesian iterative filtering is that, since the prior distribution covers a wide range of degradation levels, an application of the filter converts the degraded image to an image of less degradation for which the prior distribution is sufficiently robust to still be effective. Most methods for measuring the system response of image digitizers have involved an optical knife-edge. There are two reasons for this: first, high quality knife-edges are not difficult to obtain; and second, the one-dimensional impulse response of the system may be obtained by differentiating the response to a step function (which the knife-edge approximates).* The technique presented below uses a knife-edge scan in a slightly novel context to obtain the edge spread function (ESF) of image scanners. Traditional methods may then be used to obtain the line spread function (LSF) from the ESF.

The primary fact that separates image processing from other digital computer processing is the sheer bulk of the data base. This has effects at every stage of the processing: acquisition, digitization, storage, computation, regeneration, and interaction. The workshop was designed to expose new users to the problems encountered in each of these areas and give relevant examples. Thus the user should have a concept of the magnitude of his problem prior to its implementation. The workshop is not trying to describe how to do image processing, but to expose the facets to be considered in the design stages.

The Multispectral Thermal Imager (MTI) is a satellite system developed by the DoE. It has 10 spectral bands in the reflectance domain and 5 in the thermal LR. It is pointable and, at nadir, provides 5m IFOV in four visible and short near IR bands and 20m IFOV at longer wavelengths. Several of the bands in the reflectance domain were designed to enable quantitative compensation for aerosol effects and water vapor(daytime). These include 3 bands in and adjacent to the 940nm water vapor feature, a band at 1380nm for cirrus cloud detection and a SWIR band with small atmospheric effects. The concepts and development of these techniques have been described in detail at previous SPIE Conferences and in journals. This paper describes the adaptation of these algorithms to the MTI automated processing pipeline (standardized level 2 products) for retrieval of aerosol optical depth land subsequent compensation of reflectance bands for calibration to reflectance) and the atmospheric water vapor content (thermal IR compensation). Input data sources and flaw are described. Validation results are presented. Pre-launch validation was performed using images from the NASA AVIRIS hyperspectral imaging sensor flown in the stratosphere on NASA ER-2 aircraft compared to ground based sun photometer and radiosonde measurements from different sources. These data sets span a range of environmental conditions.

Helical computed tomography revolutionized the field of x-ray computed tomography two decades ago. The simultaneous translation of an image object with a standard computed tomography acquisition allows for fast volumetric scan for long image objects. X-ray phase sensitive imaging methods have been studied over the past few decades to provide new contrast mechanisms for imaging an object. A Talbot-Lau grating interferometer based differential phase contrast imaging method has recently demonstrated its pontential for implentation in clinical and industrial applications. In this work, the principles of helical computed tomography are extended to differential phase contrast imaging to produce volumetric reconstructions based on fan-beam data. The method demonstrates the potential for helical differential phase contrast CT to scan long objects with relatively small detector coverage in the axial direction.

The availability and use of phase-only optical processing materials has stimulated the study of phase-only holography and spatial filtering. (Refs. 1,2,3) This study leads naturally to the question of how much information about an image can be stored in the phase of the Fourier transform of the image. The kinoform is an optical de-vice that uses only the phase of the Fourier transform in image reconstruction; any information contained in the magnitude of the Fourier transform is lost, and this contributes to image degradation.

For a long time, automatic reading has been limited to optical character recognition. one year ago, except for one high end product, all industrial software or hardware products where limited to the reading of mono-column texts without images. This does not correspond to real life needs. In a current, company, pages which need to be transformed into electronic form are not only typewritten pages, but also complex pages from professional magazines, technical manuals, financial reports and tables, administrative documents, various directories, lists of spare parts etc... The real problem of automatic reading is to transform such complex paper pages including columns, images, drawings, titles, footnotes, legends, tables, occasionally in landscape format, into a computer text file without the help of an operator. Moreover, the problem is to perform this operation at an economical cost with limited computer resources in terms of processor and memory.

Pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs) were used to power a tandem ankle rehabilitation mechanism with two degrees of freedom that mimics the structure and action of a human ankle joint. Based on a genetic optimization algorithm, a single PAM mathematical model was developed, and the kinematics and dynamics of the ankle rehabilitation mechanism were modeled. The RBF-PID controller was created by combining the PID control and RBF neural network algorithms and was utilized in models for the ankle rehabilitation mechanism's position control system. According to the simulation experiment results, the RBF neural network-based PID controller outperformed the PID controller noticeably in terms of response time and control precision and can adaptively adjust the PID parameters. © 2024 SPIE.
