The performance of microwave digital radio systems is severely degraded by multipath fading and also by the nonlinear power amplifier at the transmitter, the combined effects of these result in a time varying nonlinear channel. In this paper, the multilayer perceptron (MLP) based equalizer is investigated for use on such channels. It is found to outperform the conventional approach, that is, the use of a transversal equalizer at the receiver operating with a signal predistorter placed before the non-linear power amplifier at the transmitter. An L- level non-linear function is used as a node activation for the MLP. Two update schemes are investigated, one being a complex version of the back propagation algorithm, the other a complex version of the delta-bar-delta algorithm.

Obtaining a high quality physical description of the layered structure of multilayer based optical coatings is an essential part of the optimization of their optical performance. Grazing incidence X-ray reflectivity (GIXR) is one of the most informative and easy-to-use non-destructive tools for the analysis of multilayer structures. The typical challenge of GIXR structural characterization is the reconstruction of the layered structure from fitting simulated data to experimental data. Here we present an example of the application of a newly developed, free-form, GIXR analysis to the characterization of heat induced structural changes in periodic La/B multilayers. This example shows that the developed algorithm is capable of reconstructing electron density profiles in cases where a classical non free-form approach generally fails.

Recent work has demonstrated the feasibility of neural network estimation techniques for atmospheric profiling in partially cloudy atmospheres using combined microwave (MW) and hyperspectral infrared (IR) sounding data. In this paper, the retrieval performance in problem areas (over land, near the poles, elevated terrain, etc.) is examined. Retrieval performance has been improved by stratifying the neural network training data into distinct groups based on geographical (latitude, for example), geophysical (atmospheric pressure, for example), and sensor geometrical (scan angle, for example) considerations. The spectral information content of cloud signatures in Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) data is also explored. A Principal Components Analysis. is presented that indicates that most variability due to clouds is contained in the first two eigenvectors. A novel statistical method for the retrieval of atmospheric temperature and moisture (relative humidity) profiles has been developed and evaluated with sounding data from the Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) and the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU). The present work focuses on the cloud impact on the AIRS radiances and explores the use of stochastic cloud clearing mechanisms together with neural network estimation. A stand-alone statistical algorithm will be presented that operates directly on cloud-impacted AIRS/AMSU data, with no need for a physical cloud clearing process. The algorithm is implemented in three stages. First, the infrared radiance perturbations due to clouds are estimated and corrected by combined processing of the infrared and microwave data using a Stochastic Cloud Clearing (SCC) approach. The cloud clearing of the infrared radiances was performed using principal components analysis of infrared brightness temperature contrasts in adjacent fields of view and microwave-derived estimates of the infrared clear-column radiances to estimate and correct the radiance contamina

Most of the research on dictionary learning has focused on developing algorithms under the assumption that data is available at a centralized location. But often the data is not available at a centralized location due to practical constraints like data aggregation costs, privacy concerns, etc. Using centralized dictionary learning algorithms may not be the optimal choice in such settings. This motivates the design of dictionary learning algorithms that consider distributed nature of data as one of the problem variables. Just like centralized settings, distributed dictionary learning problem can be posed in more than one way depending on the problem setup. Most notable distinguishing features are the online versus batch nature of data and the representative versus discriminative nature of the dictionaries. In this paper, several distributed dictionary learning algorithms that are designed to tackle different problem setups are reviewed. One of these algorithms is cloud K-SVD, which solves the dictionary learning problem for batch data in distributed settings. One distinguishing feature of cloud K-SVD is that it has been shown to converge to its centralized counterpart, namely, the K-SVD solution. On the other hand, no such guarantees are provided for other distributed dictionary learning algorithms. Convergence of cloud K-SVD to the centralized K-SVD solution means problems that are solvable by K-SVD in centralized settings can now be solved in distributed settings with similar performance. Finally, cloud K-SVD is used as an example to show the advantages that are attainable by deploying distributed dictionary algorithms for real world distributed datasets.

This paper proposes a line segment based image registration method. Edges are detected and partitioned into line segments. Line-fitting is applied onto every line segment to rule out those segments of high fitting error. For each segment in a reference image, putative matching segments in a test image are picked with the constraints obtained by analyzing affine transformations. Putative segment correspondences result in the correspondences of intersections of segments, which are used as matching points. An affine matrix is derived from those point correspondences and evaluated by the similarity metric. The segment correspondences ending up with higher similarity metrics are used to compute the final transformation. Experimental results show that the proposed method is robust especially when salient points can not be detected accurately.

The decomposition of time-frequency representations (TFRs) in terms of weighted spectrograms has been recently proposed by several authors. Spectrogram decomposition concepts allow inner products to be used in the computations rather than the more cumbersome outer products usually associated with TFR computations. Kernels are decomposed in terms of eigenvectors in such a manner that a TFR may be represented by a truncated spectrogram series according to the strength of the eigenvalues associated with these eigenvectors. Many TFRs can be represented by relatively few spectrograms due to the small contributions of the remaining spectrograms with eigenvalues below some threshold value. The windows of the spectrograms forming the spectrogram series are the eigenvectors of the decomposition of the kernel of the particular representation. In the present paper it is shown how full TFR representations can be obtained by using a carefully chosen set of scaled cross spectrogram windows, thus avoiding the inherent approximations of the eigenvector approach. Much redundancy can be taken advantage of to permit computation of a small number of short-time Fourier transforms (STFTs). It is not practical to compute the Wigner distribution via the spectrogram decomposition approach due to the fact that the singular values of the decomposition are plus or minus one, precluding truncation of the spectrogram series. The new approach, on the other hand, can represent a Wigner distribution and other TFRs with a small number of STFTs. These STFTs can be used to compute a number of spectrograms and cross-spectrograms which, when appropriately weighted and summed, yield a given TFR, depending on the kernel used in the decomposition.

Within the context of a study to model the effects of land use on carbon storage in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States we are processing about 100 Landsat images. The image processing challenges within the study are numerous. To determine the utility of our proposed methods many of them are being tested on a 1.2 Mha area within the region. The major challenges include mapping of forest cover type and seral stage, radiometric and geometric rectification, and change detection. In this paper we present preliminary results.

In the realm of flexible automation, viewpoint independent object recognition will become increasingly important. An algorithm for the recognition of plane shapes under pseudo- perspective projection is presented. The method is based on the comparison of features that remain invariant under 2-D affine transformations. In particular, the work presented is part of the wider framework of semi-differential invariants. It was successfully tested on a database containing 42 objects.

Basic principles of radar polarimetry are introduced and various optimization procedures for the propagation (scattering) range operator equation and the received power expressions are presented and compared. Based on a complete description of isolated and distributed scatterers, target classification, target-versus-clutter discrimination, and optimal contrast enhancement algorithms are derived and shown to be of great utility in the proper interpretation of POL-RAD/SAR microwave signatures in terrestrial and planetary remote sensing.

In this paper we look at various algorithms for approximating the target-measurement association probabilities of the Joint Probabilistic Data Association Filter (JPDAF). We consider their computational complexity and compare their performance with respect to the Mean Optimal Subpattern Assignment (MOSPA) statistic in a scenario involving closely-spaced targets.
