A Charge Injection Device Technologies 512 X 512 CID array has been tested at liquid nitrogen temperature to assess its suitability for use in low light applications. The CID-38 chip used was installed in a SICam dewar/electronics from CIDTEC. For this particular system the noise floor was measured to be approximately equals 260 electrons rms for a single readout. Using the nondestructive readout option an approximately equals (root)N, where N is the number of readouts, improvement in this noise figure can be achieved. The average dark current at 77 degree(s)K was not measurable in a three-hour dark integration.

This paper presents procedures to calculate the probability that the measurement originating from an extraneous target will be (mis)associated with a target of interest for the cases of Nearest Neighbor and Global association. It is shown that these misassociation probabilities depend., under certain assumptions, on a particular - covariance weighted - norm of the difference between the targets' predicted measurements. For the Nearest Neighbor association, the exact solution, obtained for the case of equal innovation covariances, is based on a noncentral chi-square distribution. An approximate solution is also presented for the case of unequal innovation covariances. For the Global case an approximation is presented for the case of "similar" innovation covariances. In the general case of unequal innovation covariances where this approximation fails, an exact method based on the inversion of the characteristic function is presented. The theoretical results, confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations, quantify the benefit of Global vs. Nearest Neighbor association. These results are applied to problems of single sensor as well as centralized fusion architecture multiple sensor tracking.

Recent practice in image processing is dominated by heuristic methods used to design practical, relevant algorithms. To ensure high efficiency in the design process, the communication between user and computer should be as direct as possible. An interactive software system for image processing is required to fulfill this demand. Interpreter-based systems with high interactivity available on the software market have the drawback of low operation speed. In AMBA/D we combine the performance of a compiler/based system, with the interactivity of an interpreter system. The AMBA/D system is an interactive programming environment with integrated facilities to create, compile, execute, and debug programs. In AMBA/D, a compiler language, direct execution, and programming concept is combined with a collection of high-level image processing procedures. The design of a special compiler language was necessary because existing computer languages like FORTRAN, C, etc., do not fulfill our requirement of interactivity. The system runs of an IBM-compatible personal computer and can be used with different types of commercially available frame grabbers.

In situ ellipsometry is of interest for monitoring and control of growing films. Its extreme sensitivity to thin layers also allows the measurement of the interface film frequently formed between a growing film and the substrate. The installation and operation of an in situ system on two different vacuum coating machines is described. The system records 'F and measurements every 5 seconds during film growth. We present an algorithm for computing the thickness (d) and index (n'.ik) of a growing and an interface film on a known substrate from five Y and measurements at different times during film growth. Numerical solutions of the ellipsometer equations for d, n, and k performed using a 25 MHz 80386 microprocessor with an 80387 math co-processor require about 30 minutes. Additional solutions beyond the first five data sets require only two additional measurements. By taking data in repeated time intervals during the growth of a film, we obtain a depth profile of its optical properties.

If the concept of Euclidean and geodesic distance is of great importance in binary mathematical morphology (MM), the grey-level MM deals mainly with neighborhood configuration analysis. This paper presents a novel approach to grey-level MM based on the concept of the distance function relative to topographical surfaces. By introducing the notions of connection cost and deviation cost, we define the topographical and differential distances and develop a powerful theoretical framework for establishing the equivalence between the two fundamental notions of skeleton by influence zones and watershed: the SKIZ of the set of the minima of a grey-level image f with respect to the differential distance function is exactly the watershed of f. This leads to a duality between binary and grey-level images as well as new fast algorithms for computing the SKIZ and the watershed.

Evolutionary optimization algorithms have been recently introduced as nonimaging optics design techniques. Unlike optimization of imaging systems, non sequential ray tracing simulations and complex non centred systems design must be considered, adding complexity to the problem. The Merit Function (MF) is a key element in the automatic optimization algorithm, nevertheless the selection of each objective's weight, {w(i)}, inside merit function needs a previous trial and error process for each optimization. The problem then is to determine appropriate weights value for each objective. In this paper we propose a new Dynamic Merit Function, DMF, with variable weight factors {w(i)(n)}. The proposed algorithm, automatically adapts weight factors, during the evolution of the optimization process. This dynamic merit function avoids the previous trial and error procedure selecting the right merit function and provides better results than conventional merit functions (CMF). Also we analyse the Multistart optimization algorithm applied in the flowline nonimaging design technique.

EO/IR/Laser detection of a target amidst clutter/background is a difficult problem often treated with simplistic models. Unlike noise, clutter is more complex, neither spectrally white nor statistically Gaussian. Therefore, it is insufficient to lump clutter with noise and use standard detection curves. Battelle has produced image randomization software called BATRAN (Background and Target Randomization) which computes various types of statistical distributions to randomize background and target pixels separately. The types of statistics implemented include exponential, Gaussian, log-normal, and Rice distributions for both the background and target. In an effort to identify a more robust and accurate (Delta) T metric definition for background and target matching, Battelle also developed a new (Delta) T metric definition and its equation using RMS pixel-based higher order statistics for the background and target signature pixel data in a scene image. This new (Delta) T metric provides a better estimate of true signature difference between the background/clutter and target, enabling more accurate matching of the background/clutter and target for use in sensor detection performance assessment.

A video-based surveillance system for passengers includes face detection, face tracking and face recognition. In general, the final recognition result of the video-based surveillance system is usually determined by the cumulative recognition results. Under this strategy, the correctness of face tracking plays an important role for the system recognition rate. For face tracking, the challenges of face tracking on a moving platform are that the space and time information used for conventional face tracking algorithms may be lost. Consequently, conventional face tracking algorithms can barely handle the face tracking on a moving platform. In this paper, we have verified the state-of-the-art technologies for face detection, face tracking and face recognition on a moving platform. In the mean time, we also proposed a new strategy for face tracking on a moving platform or face tracking under very low frame rate. The steps of the new strategy for face detection are: (1) classification the detected faces over a certain period instead of every frame (2) Tracking of each passenger is equivalent to reconstruct the time order of certain period for each passenger. If the cumulative recognition results are the only part needed for the surveillance system, step 2 can be skipped. In addition, if the additional information from the passengers is required, such as path tracking, lip read, gesture recognition, etc, time order reconstruction in step 2 can offer the information required.

For electro-optical object recognition, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are the state-of-the-art. For large datasets, CNNs are able to learn meaningful features used for classification. However, their application to synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has been limited. In this work we experimented with various CNN architectures on the MSTAR SAR dataset. As the input to the CNN we used the magnitude and phase (2 channels) of the SAR imagery. We used the deep learning toolboxes CAFFE and Torch7. Our results show that we can achieve 93% accuracy on the MSTAR dataset using CNNs.

In this paper, we generate gaits for mixed systems, that is, dynamic systems that are subject to a set of non-holonomic constraints. What is unique about mixed systems is that when we express their dynamics in body coordinates, the motion of these systems can be attributed to two decoupled terms: the geometric and dynamic phase shifts. In our prior work, we analyzed systems whose dynamic phase shift was null by definition. Purely mechanical and principally kinematic systems are two classes of mechanical systems that have this property. We generated gaits for these two classes of systems by intuitively evaluating their geometric phase shift and relating it to a volume integral under well-defined height functions. One of the contributions of this paper is to present a similar intuitive approach for computing the dynamic phase shift. We achieve this, by introducing a new scaled momentum variable that not only simplifies the momentum evolution equation but also allows us to introduce a new set of well-defined gamma functions which enable us to intuitively evaluate the dynamic phase shift. More specifically, by analyzing these novel gamma functions in a similar way to how we analyzed height functions, and by analyzing the sign-definiteness of the scaled momentum variable, we are able to ensure that the dynamic phase shift is non-zero solely along the desired fiber direction. Finally, we also introduce a novel mechanical system, the variable inertia snakeboard, which is a generalization of the original snakeboard that was previously studied in the literature. Not only does this general system help us identify regions of the base space where we can not define a certain type of gaits, but also it helps us verify the generality and applicability of our gait generation approach.
