We consider the general problem of analysis and design of control system presence of uncertainties. We treat uncertainties that affect a control system as random variables. The performance of the system is measured by the expectation of some derived random variables, which are typically bounded. We develop adaptive sequential randomized algorithms for estimating and optimizing the expectation of such bounded random variables with guaranteed accuracy and confidence level. These algorithms can be applied to overcome the conservatism and computational complexity in the analysis and design of controllers to be used in uncertain environments. We develop methods for investigating the optimality and computational complexity of such algorithms.

The idea of box connectivity approach (BCA) is to partition the bounding frame of the character bitmap into a fixed number of rectangles, to define some properties of those rectangles, and to establish connectivity relations between the rectangles. Hamming distance and vector optimization are used for classification. Good results in recognition of high quality data (400 dpi) in three fonts (Courier, Helvetica, and New Times Roman) and eight sizes (from 8 to 24 points) were reported in a previous paper. These findings are confirmed in this paper by an experiment showing that, for the same number of bits, BCA features increase the rate of recognition twice with respect to features obtained by simple decimation. However, the actual method is limited by the fact that the number of referent templates increases with the number of fonts to be recognized. The purpose of this paper is to remove this limitation. The main part of the paper discusses the properties of the Hamming distance and how they can be used in the BCA algorithm to improve the efficiency of classification. The last section reports the results of an experiment showing the discrimination power of BCA features.

In the present paper it is presented a methodology to calculate the surface temperature (ST) from the combination of the radiometric temperature in two different DAIS (Digital Airborne Imaging Spectrometer) thermal bands using split-window (sw) method. To get this objective the MODTRAN 3.5 radiative transfer code was used to predict radiance for DAIS channels 74 (8.75 mum), 75 (9.65 mum), 76 (10.48 mum), 77 (11.27 mum), 78 (12.00 mum) and 79 (12.67 mum) at different aircraft altitudes with the appropriate channel filter functions. In order to analyse atmospheric effects a set of radiosoundings that cover the variability of surface temperature and water vapour concentration on a world-wide scale was used. Once the algorithm has been obtained, an application to DAIS images obtained in Colmar (France) and Barrax (Spain) during the DAISEX'98 and '99 ( Data Airborne Imaging Spectrometer Experiment) campaigns framework has been made. Finally a comparison between the surface temperature obtained from DAIS data, previously corrected from the atmospheric and emissivity effect, and the simultaneous in-situ measurements, is included. The results show that the proposed theoretical sw are able to produce land surface temperature with a standard deviation lower than 1 K. This is in good agreement with the validation results obtained from DAISEX campaign.

The problem of collision-free path generation for mobile robots is considered This task is formulated into an optimization problem for which a recurrent neural network similar to Hopfield''s is useiL The outputs of the units in the network correspond to the position of some intermediate points on the path which would be connected by straight lines. The steady-state values of the outputs of the units in the network correspond to the coordinates of the position of the intermediate points on the shortest collision-free path to the targets To derive the dynamics of the network first an eneri function corresponding to the distance from the target the total length of the path and the degree of closeness to the obstacles is derived1 The dynamics of the network is then derived according to a gradient descent algorithms 1 .

An intelligent robot with a camera and a partial model of its environment should be able to determine where it is from what it sees. This goal, landmark based navigation, can be realized using geometric object recognition algorithms. An important problem that arises in the development of such algorithms concerns the role of full 3-D perspective projection. Much of the work on object recognition has focused upon simplified problems which are essentially 2- D. One such simplification uses weak-perspective: to test the alignment of matched features object models are rotated, translated, and scaled in the image plane. At increased computational cost, full-perspective can be incorporated into recognition using a family of probabilistic optimization procedures based upon local search. This paper considers two specific algorithms from this family: subset-convergent and variable-depth local search. Both approaches reliably recognize landmarks even when landmark appearance is sensitive to perspective. Results presented here suggest the relatively simpler variable-depth algorithm is preferable when errors in the robot pose estimate are smaller, but that at some point as uncertainty in the initial pose estimate increases the more sophisticated subset-convergent algorithm becomes preferable.

Physical models for color image formation provide constraints which are useful for interpreting 3D scenes. I summarize the physics underlying color image formation. Models for surface and body reflection from metals and dielectrics are analyzed in detail. This analysis allows us to evaluate the benefits we stand to gain by using color information in machine vision. I show from the reflection models that color allows the computation of image statistics which are independent of scene geometry. This principle has been used to develop an efficient algorithm for segmenting images of 3D scenes using normalized color. The algorithm applies to images of a wide range of materials and surface textures and is useful for a wide variety of machine vision tasks including 3D recognition and 3D inspection. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the scope of the models and the capabilities of the segmentation algorithm.

We present a novel approach for implementing and optimizing an Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) algorithm for Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery using the Princeton Engine (PE), a general purpose massively parallel single instruction multiple data (SIMD) machine. This approach was developed in the algorithm Understanding Laboratory (AUL), a unique facility which is chartered to assist algorithm developers through high-speed implementation and near real-time visualization, and is located within the National Information Display Laboratory (NIDL). The PE architecture automatically provides a high speed-up directly proportional to the width of the image being processed, thereby reducing the train/test cycle times of ATR algorithms from days and hours down to minutes. Given this speed-up, the user can now train the system to classify a set of objects and then test it rapidly, thus tightening the train/test loop. With our approach, one can operate on the entire image, retaining useful image information until the very last stage in the algorithm.

Wide area airborne surveillance (WAAS) systems are a new class of remote sensing imagers which have many military and civilian applications. These systems are characterized by long loiter times (extended imaging time over fixed target areas) and large footprint target areas. These characteristics complicate moving object detection and tracking due to the large image size and high number of moving objects. This research evaluates existing object detection and tracking algorithms with WAAS data and provides enhancements to the processing chain which decrease processing time and maintain or increase tracking accuracy. Decreases in processing time are needed to perform real-time or near real-time tracking either on the WAAS sensor platform or in ground station processing centers. Increased tracking accuracy benefits real-time users and forensic (off-line) users.

Since the advent of target tracking systems employing a diverse mixture of sensors, there has been increasing recognition by air defense system planners and other military system analysts of the need to integrate these tracks so that a clear air picture can be obtained in a command center. A popular methodology to achieve this goal is to perform track-to-track fusion, which performs track-to-track association as well as kinematic state vector fusion. This paper seeks to answer analytically the extent of improvement achievable by means of kinetic state vector fusion when the tracks are obtained from dissimilar sensors (e.g., Radar/ESM/IRST/IFF). It is well known that evaluation of the performance of state vector fusion algorithms at steady state must take into account the effects of cross-correlation between eligible tracks introduced by the input noise which, unfortunately, is often neglected because of added computational complexity. In this paper, an expression for the steady-state cross-covariance matrix for a 2D state vector track-to-track fusion is obtained. This matrix is shown to be a function of the parameters of the Kalman filters associated with the candidate tracks being fused. Conditions for positive definiteness of the cross-covariance matrix have been derived and the effect of positive definiteness on performance of track-to-track fusion is also discussed.

This paper describes results of a tool development process and still on-going research program in multilevel algorithm design and validation for multisensor systems. Our work covers both the algorithm design process including the simulation efforts and the implementation of the algorithms into the sensor node prepared for real-time processing within a vision system network. The sensor node hardware is based on the System on Programmable Chip (SOPC)-Technology. This gives us the flexibility to interface different kinds of sensor elements (matrix-, line-sensors) and the processing-power to provide real-time possibilities in height data-rate applications. At the point today our hardware module for Vision applications also uses a CPU module. This results in a high flexibility concerning the communication efforts. Our design can provide the use of CPU-modules within the SOPC design also. Mapping algorithms into a distributed sensor network will be done in either a centralized or decentralized way. That means the algorithm will be running on one sensor node or a part of the algorithm is implemented on some others nodes within the network. Beginning at the design and simulation level different kind of levels are opened for optimization, test and validate the developed algorithm. We present the architectural framework that supports the multilevel test and validation process.
