independent component analysis (ICA) has shown success in many applications. This paper investigates a new application of the ICA in endmember extraction and abundance quantification for hyperspectral imagery. An endmember is generally referred to as an idealized pure signature for a class whose presence is considered to be rare. When it occurs, it may not appear in large population. In this case, the commonly used principal components analysis (PCA) may not be effective since endmembers usually contribute very little in statistics to data variance. In order to substantiate our findings, an ICA-based approach, called ICA-based abundance quantification algorithm (ICA-AQA) is developed. Three novelties result from our proposed ICA-AQA. First, unlike the commonly used least squares abundance-constrained linear spectral mixture analysis (ACLSMA) which is a 2(nd) order statistics-based method, the ICA-AQA is a high order statistics-based technique. Second, due to the use of statistical independence it is generally thought that the ICA cannot be implemented as a constrained method. The ICA-AQA shows otherwise. Third, in order for the ACLSMA to perform abundance quantification, it requires an algorithm to find image endmembers first then followed by an abundance-constrained algorithm for quantification. As opposed to such a two-stage process, the ICA-AQA can accomplish endmember extraction and abundance quantification simultaneously in one-shot operation. Experimental results demonstrate that the ICA-AQA performs at least comparably to abundance-constrained methods.

This paper presents an algorithm to initiate tracks of a ballistic missile in the initial exoatmospheric phase, using line of sight measurements from one or more moving platforms (typically satellites). The major feature of this problem is the poor target motion observability which results in a very ill-conditioned estimation problem.

We compared data requirements of filtered-backprojection (FBP) and backprojection-filtration (BPF) algorithms based on PI-lines in helical cone-beam CT. Since the filtration process in FBP algorithm needs all the projection data of PI-lines for each view, the required detector size should be bigger than the size that can cover Tam-Danielsson (T-D) window to avoid data truncation. BPF algorithm, however, requires the projection data only within the T-D window, which means smaller detector size can be used to reconstruct the same image than that in FBP. In other words, a longer helical pitch can be obtained by using BPF algorithm without any truncation artifacts when a fixed detector size is given. The purpose of the work is to demonstrate numerically that extended volume coverage in helical cone-beam CT by using PI-line-based BPF algorithm can be achieved.

A new concept of Neural Network-Aided Design (NN-AD) is presented. It is a hierarchical approach consisting of several concatenated stages of visual information processing that are designed by training neural networks (NN). Thus, NN-AD can be viewed as a general tool for the design of special filters in accordance with the specific task of image processing under consideration. The nonlinear filters are formatted by a supervised presentation of a proper set of input-output patterns. The principles of NN-AD design are illustrated by the examples of edge detection with subpixel resolution and of orientational processing for edge enhancement. The proposed NN-AD approach is found to be very robust with regard to various types of errors.

We have developed a method for clustering features into objects by taking those features which include intensity, orientations and colors from the most salient points in an image as determined by our biologically motivated saliency program. We can train a program to cluster these features by only supplying as training input the number of objects that should appear in an image. We do this by clustering from a technique that involves linking nodes in a minimum spanning tree by not only distance, but by a density metric as well. We can then form classes over objects or object segmentation in a novel validation set by training over a set of seven soft and hard parameters. We discus as well the uses of such a flexible method in landmark based navigation since a robot using such a method may have a better ability to generalize over the features and objects.

A thermal technique and system for measuring the depth of a crack in metal is described. The transient heat signature of a moving infrared laser source is analyzed using three intensity-based algorithms and the limitations of this approach are examined. Experimental results demonstrate capability to measure EDM-notches 0.06 inches deep and shallower, and the variability of the system agrees with the theoretical. The advantages and disadvantages of this technique over other non-destructive testing (NDT) methods are also outlined.

Lowe demonstrated a method for automatically segmenting and smoothing image curves by varying degrees. It was intended to remove noise and unnecessary fine detail, aiding subsequent processing such as grouping and matching. An alternative technique is described in this paper that is based on recursively subdividing the curve into alternative sets of sections. Rather than use thresholds on the values of curvature and its derivatives to determine the segmentation and degree of smoothing our technique is driven by three qualitative measures: (1) a criterion for selecting potential breakpoints, (2) a criterion for determining the amount of smoothing for curve sections, and (3) a significance measure that determines which sections form the best selection. The advantages of the technique are robustness, scale invariance, and the absence of parameters.

Timely dissemination of information to mobile users is vital in many applications. In a critical situation, no network infrastructure may be available for use in dissemination, over and above the on-board storage capability of the mobile users themselves. We consider the following specialized content distribution application: a group of users equipped with wireless devices build an ad hoc network in order cooperatively to retrieve information from certain regions (the mission sites). Each user requires access to some set of information items originating from sources lying within a region. Each user desires low-latency access to its desired data items, upon request (i.e., when pulled). In order to minimize average response time, we allow users to pull data either directly from sources or, when possible, from other nearby users who have already pulled, and continue to carry, the desired data items. That is, we allow for data to be pushed to one user and then pulled by one or more additional users. The total latency experienced by a user vis-vis a certain data item is then in general a combination of the push delay and the pull delay. We assume each delay time is a function of the hop distance between the pair of points in question. Our goal in this paper is to assign data to mobile users, in order to minimize the total cost and the average latency experienced by all the users. In a static setting, we solve this problem in two different schemes, one of which is easy to solve but wasteful, one of which relates to NP-hard problems but is less so. Then in a dynamic setting, we adapt the algorithm for the static setting and develop a new algorithm with respect to users' gradual arrival. In the end we show a trade-off can be made between minimizing the cost and latency.

The information generated by the integrated sensor suite is massive. Simply bringing the information to the decision makers is a cognitive disaster due to the information overload. Intelligent algorithms need to be developed to exploit and filter the information. In this work, we seek to develop content-level change detection and activity-level information fusion and filtering algorithms to detect unusual activities for persistent target surveillance applications.

Planned for launch in June 1998, the Earth Observing System (EOS) AM1-spacecraft will carry five instruments which will be placed into a polar,sun-synchronous, 705 km orbit. EOS AM-1 will cross the equator at 10:30a.m. local time when daily cloud cover is typically at a minimum over land, such that surface features can be more easily observed The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) of Japan is providing the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer(ASTER) instrument. The ASTER instrument is a high performance spatial imager which has three sensors (VNIR: Visible Near Infrared Radiometer, SWIR: Short Wave Infrared Radiometer, and TIR: Thermal Infrared Radiometer). The interval between the nearest two orbits is 172 km at the equator. The swath of sensors is 60 km. Therefore ASTER must have pointing capability in order to cover the whole surface of the earth. ASTER accepts xARs (Acquisition Requests) from many users. Because of constrained spacecraft data capacity, ASTER's data acquisition duty cycle is Limited. These conditions make the scheduling algorithm very complex. This paper presents the data acquisition scheduling algorithm which will perform the most effective scheduling from the inputs which consist of many xARs and which is derived from prioritization information.
