Expert systems and other conventional approaches have proven to be of limited ability in addressing the problem of robot navigation. Recent advances in neural network technology, in particular, powerful learning paradigms and neuro-computer hardware, could provide crucial tools for developing improved algorithms and computational hardware for robot navigation. Several researchers have designed nonlinear controllers using neural networks for precise navigation and positioning of the robotic vehicles around fixed and moving objects. This paper reviews various neural net applications in the areas of robot control. Autonomous land vehicles, and underwater robotic vehicles. The results show the feasibility of using neuro-controllers for these robotic vehicles in the presence of unpredictable changes int eh dynamics of the vehicle and its environment.

The future ofthe "secure transaction" and the success ofall undertakings that depend on absolute certainty that the individuals involved really are who and what they represent themselves to be is dependent upon the successful development of absolutely accurate, low-cost and easy-to-operate Biometric Identification Systems. Whether these transactions are political, military, financial or administrative (e.g. health cards, drivers licenses, welfare entitlement, national identification cards, credit card transactions, etc.), the need for such secure and positive identification has never been greater -and yet we are only at the beginning ofan era in which we will see the emergence and proliferation of Biometric Identification Systems in nearly every field ofhuman endeavor. Proper application ofthese systems will change the way the world operates, and that is precisely the goal ofComparator Systems Corporation. Just as with the photo-copier 40 years ago and the personal computer 20 years ago, the potential applications for positive personal identification are going to make the Biometric Identification System a commonplace component in the standard practice ofbusiness, and in interhuman relationships ofall kinds. Optical computer designs must implicitly or explicitly allow for power budgeting to compensate for crosstalk and loss. This paper develops algorithms for calculating the system crosstalk and power loss in optical systems, using a graph theoretic system model. These algorithms form the basis for an optical systems design methodology in which the designer can develop a system design that employs lumped delays, and that assumes zero device delay, crosstalk and loss, and then employ the algorithms developed in this paper to estimate actual system delay distribution, crosstalk, and power loss.

This paper presents an image interpolation algorithm using the recently developed local cardinal interpolatory spline (LCIS). The procedures for constructing the LCIS basis are described for both univariate and bivariate cases. This new LCIS algorithm is very efficient and can be implemented easily. Without the need of a mapping procedure, this method is faster than any other polynomial interpolation approach. The C2 property of the LCIS also allows the gradient operator to be constructed for edge detection. Both image interpolation and edge detection algorithms are compared with existing methods in two different examples.

The surveillance of very dim IR targets or `fast-burn' targets, or both, is usually assumed to require the use of either staring sensors or scanning sensors with relatively fast revisit rates. The thesis of this paper is that a greater multiplicity of scanning sensors with relatively slow revisit rates often can be used effectively to achieve the required surveillance results. In particular, we describe conditions under which a dim or fast-burn target can be detected and tracked, and accurate tactical parameters can be computed for the target, by using as few as one observation per sensor per target.

In order to deliver the computational power required by real-time manipulation and display of multidimensional objects, we present a massively parallel octree architecture, based on a new Interconnection Network, the Partitionable Spanning Multibus Hypercube (PSMH). Its goal is, to use one Processing Element per obel (object element), as opposed to one Processing Element per voxel (volume element). The underlying idea of the PSMH, is to take advantage of the data hierarchical ordering to reduce the computational cost. As a basic tool, we first derive a routing algorithm for the case of an object shift. Its running time is of order O(max(n³, m)), for an 8ⁿ PSMH, where m is the message length in bits. As we do not consider voxels but obels, we design a compaction algorithm, which meets the routing requirements. We get a compression ratio of O(2ⁿ). This is followed by a parallel neighbor finding technique, to account for the compaction in the routing operations.

The main aim of this paper is to describe a method for locating a subimage of a stored image that approximately matches a given query image. This matching can support naive users in accessing an image database according to image contents rather symbolic attributes. The query image can be either composed using painting tools or cuts out of an actual scanned image. Our method is based on the extraction of features from the query image and from the stored images. The following three steps are involved: (1) an ISODATA algorithm is applied to segment (into region) both the query image and the stored images; (2) the normalized moment and geometrical features are computed from the segmented regions, and (3) a matching process is run on the resulting features to find those stored images which should be retrieved. The result is an ordered list of stored images or subimages from the database.

Existing tracking algorithms have difficulties with multiple objects in heavy clutter'. As a number of clutter objects increases, it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain and especially to initiate tracks. A near optimal algorithm, the Multiple Hypothesis Tracking (MHT)2, initiates tracks by considering all possible associations between multiple objects and clutter event on multiple frames. This, however, requires combinatorially large amount of computation, which is difficult to handle even for neural networks, when a number of clutter objects is large. A partial solution to this problem is offered by the Joint Probability Density Association (JPDA) tracking algorithm3, which performs fuzzy associations of objects and tracks, eliminating combinatorial search. However, the JPDA algorithm performs associations only on the last frame using established tracks and is, therefore, unsuitable for track initiation. The problem is becoming even more complicated for imaging, incoherent sensors, when direct measurement of object velocity via the Doppler effect is unavailable. We have applied a previously developed MLANS neural network'5'6 to the problem of tracking multiple objects in heavy clutter. In our approach the MLANS performs a fuzzy classification of all objects in multiple frames into multiple classes of txacks and random clutter. This novel approach to tracking using an optimal classification algorithm results in a dramatic improvement of performance: the MLANS tracking combines advantages of both the JPDA and the MHT, it is capable of track initiation by considering multiple frames, and it eliminates combinatorial search via fuzzy associations.

We present an efficient algorithm for progressive coding of cutting plane data extracted from large-scale computational field simulation (CFS) datasets. Since cutting planes are frequently used for examination of 3D simulation results, efficient compression of their geometry, topography, and the associated field data is important for good visualization performance, especially when the simulation is running on a geographically remote server or the simulation results are stored in a remote repository. Progressive coding is ideal for exploratory visualization since the data can be presented naturally starting with a coarse view and progressing down to the detail. In our algorithm, each cutting plane is reduced at the server to a set of triangle strips containing contour lines. On the local visualization machine (the client), the original surface is reconstructed by triangulating the space between the triangle strips. The more contour lines used, the higher the reconstruction accuracy obtained. It can quickly show an area of interest without modifying that section of the original triangle mesh. In generating the data to be sent to the client, the algorithm can smoothly trade-off computation and the accuracy of the representation by altering the cutting plane generation procedure or by adjusting the accuracy of the data.
