This paper presents a simple and effective method for the concurrent manipulation of linearly ordered data structures on hypercube systems, and extends it to cater to multidimensional images. The method is based on the existence of a binomial search tree rooted at any arbitrary processor node of the hypercube such that (i) every edge of the tree corresponds to a direct link between a pair of hypercube nodes, and (ii) it spans any arbitrary sequence of n consecutive nodes as specified by a gray code ordering, using a fan-out of at most [log₂n] and a depth of ([log₂n] + 1) . The search trees spanning different processor lists are vertex disjoint and are formed dynamically and concurrently, They can be specified using information local to each node. Thus, they can be used for performing operations such as broadcast and merge simultaneously on image components with non-uniform sizes. The concurrent search reduces the complexity of several low and intermediate-level image processing algorithms to depend on the size of the largest image segment rather than the size of the entire image.

Diffuse optical tomography (DOT) in the near infrared involves reconstruction of spatially varying optical properties of turbid medium from boundary measurements based on a forward model of photon propagation. Due to highly non-linear nature of the DOT, high quality image reconstruction is a computationally demanding problem that requires repeated solutions of both the forward and the inverse problems. Therefore, it is highly desirable to develop methods and algorithms that are computationally efficient. In this paper, we propose a domain decomposition approach to address the computational complexity of the DOT problem. We propose a two-level multiplicative overlapping domain decomposition method for the forward problem and a two-level space decomposition method for the inverse problem. We showed the convergence of the inverse solver and derived the computational complexity of each method. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach in numerical simulations.

In linear predictive coding, especially in adaptive linear predictive coding, channel errors tend to propagate destroying significant portions of an image. In this paper, an adaptive weighted median predictive coding scheme which is robust against channel errors is proposed. Neither overhead information nor error correction coding is needed. The scheme is applied to real images and is shown to provide much improved performance at high bit error rates (BER).

Frequent and spatially distributed measurements of soil moisture (SMC), at different spatial scales, are advisable for all applications related to the environmental disciplines, such as climatology, meteorology, hydrology and agriculture. Satellite sensors operating in the low part of microwave spectrum are very suitable for this purpose, and their signals can be directly related to the moisture content of the observed surfaces, provided that all the contributions from soil and vegetation to the measured signal are properly accounted for. Among the algorithms used for the retrieval of SMC from both active (i.e. Synthetic Aperture Radar, SAR or real aperture radars) and passive (radiometers) microwave sensors, the artificial neural networks (ANN) represent the best compromise between accuracy and computation speed. ANN based algorithms have been developed at IFAC, and adapted to several radar and radiometric satellite sensors, in order to generate SMC products at different spatial resolutions, varying from hundreds of meters to tens of kilometers. These algorithms, which use the ANN techniques for inverting theoretical and semi-empirical models, such as Advanced Integral Equation (AIEM), Oh models, and Radiative transfer Theory (RTT), have been adapted to the C-band acquisitions from SAR (Envisat/ASAR) and real aperture radar (ASCAT) and to the X-band SAR acquisitions of Cosmo-SkyMed and TerraSAR-X. Moreover, a specific ANN algorithm has also been implemented for the L-band active and passive acquisitions of the incoming SMAP mission. The latter satellite will carry onboard simultaneously one radar and one radiometer operating at the same frequency, but with different spatial resolutions (3 and 40 km, respectively). Large datasets of co-located satellite acquisitions and direct SMC measurements on several test sites located worldwide have been used along with simulations derived from forward electromagnetic models for setting up, training and validating these algorit

This paper describes the results of a 3D super-resolution algorithm applied to the range data obtained from a recent Flash Lidar helicopter flight test. The flight test was conducted by the NASA's Autonomous Landing and Hazard Avoidance Technology (ALHAT) project over a simulated lunar terrain facility at NASA Kennedy Space Center. ALHAT is developing the technology for safe autonomous landing on the surface of celestial bodies: Moon, Mars, asteroids. One of the test objectives was to verify the ability of 3D super-resolution technique to generate high resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) and to determine time resolved relative positions and orientations of the vehicle. 3D super-resolution algorithm was developed earlier and tested in computational modeling, and laboratory experiments, and in a few dynamic experiments using a moving truck. Prior to the helicopter flight test campaign, a 100mX100m hazard field was constructed having most of the relevant extraterrestrial hazard: slopes, rocks, and craters with different sizes. Data were collected during the flight and then processed by the super-resolution code. The detailed DEM of the hazard field was constructed using independent measurement to be used for comparison. ALHAT navigation system data were used to verify abilities of super-resolution method to provide accurate relative navigation information. Namely, the 6 degree of freedom state vector of the instrument as a function of time was restored from super-resolution data. The results of comparisons show that the super-resolution method can construct high quality DEMs and allows for identifying hazards like rocks and craters within the accordance of ALHAT requirements.

Advances in sensor and computer technology are resulting in an increased use of three-dimensional images in medical diagnosis. Three dimensional edge detection provides 3D anatomical representation that aids in planning and executing certain surgical procedures as well as in registering images of different modalities. Existing 3D edge detectors are 3D generalizations of 2D edge detectors. Most have limited resolution in boundary representation (subject to the resolution of imaging modality) and limited ability to directly deal with anisotropic sampling which occurs frequently in medical images. This paper presents a formal formulation of the 3D edge detection problem for anisotropically sampled images. Our approach differs from the previous approaches in the following ways: (1) a 3D edge detector is developed for data on anisotropic grids, (2) a modified version of the marching cube algorithm is used to locate the zero-crossings of the second-order derivatives, and (3) a connected component algorithm is developed for grouping zero- crossing surfaces into a set of disjoint surfaces. We show experimental results on many clinically acquired CT and MR images.

Picture someone walking from left to right. During one step (intra-step) we treat them as a simple pendulum. This model is called the rimless wheel in the literature. We analyze this model intra-step using dynamic programming to find the optimum energy profile based on time and energy cost. We then analyze the problem inter-step for the ideal stepsize based on time cost alone, i.e., without foot collision (energy) losses.

We report and demonstrate a new technique to measure the full intensity and phase of a single femtosecond laser pulse. The technique, which we call 'frequency resolved optical gating' (FROG), is inexpensive, easy to implement, and provides an output that graphically displays the instantaneous frequency vs. time of the pulse. Using almost any instantaneous nonlinear- optical interaction of two replicas of the ultrashort pulse to be measured, FROG involves measuring the spectrum of the signal pulse as a function of delay between the two replicas. The resulting trace of intensity vs. frequency and delay yields an intuitive display of the pulse, similar to the pulse spectrogram. We show that the problem of inverting the FROG trace to obtain the pulse intensity and phase is a two-dimensional phase-retrieval problem. As a result, the FROG trace yields, in principle, an essentially unique pulse intensity and phase. In this work, we show that this is the case in practice, also. In addition, we present an iterative- Fourier-transform algorithm for inverting the FROG trace.

This paper describes matrix based algorithms for computing wavelet transform representations with application to multiresolution analysis. Structure of the algorithm presented is well suited for programming purpose and also for the implementation on VLSI processors. By using overlap-add or overlap-save techniques, constant matrix size can be used to accommodate arbitrary data lengths. Performance of the algorithm described in this paper is illustrated by decomposing an image into details and smoothed components.

There is currently a considerable interest in methods of invariant 3D image recognition. Indeed, very often information about 3D objects can be obtained by computer tomographic reconstruction, 3D magnetic resonance imaging, passive 3D sensors or active range finders. Due to that algorithms of systematic derivation of 3D moment invariants should be developed for 3D colour object recognition. In this work we proposed an elegant theory which allows to describe many such invariants. Our theory is based on the theory of triplet numbers and quaternions. We propose Hurwitzon valued invariants, which are related to the descriptions of objects as the zero sets of implicit polynomials. These are global invariants which show great promise for recognition of complicated objects. Hurwitzon-valued invariants have good discriminating power for computer recognition of 3D colour objects using statistical pattern recognition methods. For fast computation of Hurwitzon-valued invariants we us(, modular arithmetic of Galois fields and rings, which maps calculation of invariants to fast number theoretical Fourior-Galois-Hamilton transform.
