In this article we present a method for hyperspectral band selection that yields superior classification results while only using a subset of the available bands. The approach originates from a comprehensive physical and mathematical understanding of the distance metrics used to compare hyperspectral signals, and it exploits an exact decomposition of a common metric, the Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM), to select bands which increase the angular contrast between target classes. Using real spectroradiometer and sensor data collected by the HYDICE sensor, the technique significantly improves the discrimination performance for two spectrally similar classes, while using only a fraction of the available bands. The approach is extended to a hierarchical architecture for material identification using spectral libraries that is shown to outperform the traditional angle-based classifier which employs all available bands. Consequently, better material identification performance can be achieved using significantly fewer bands, thus introducing dramatic benefits for the design and utilization of spectral libraries.

Cost effective development of machine vision applications requires the availability of application development tools which provide a consistent interface for the application engineer. To be effective the tools nust be consistent across multiple platforms where the platforms can vary with respect to the image processing hardware the host computer and the operating system. This paper describes a programming system which addresses these requirements. The independence from specific image processing platforms is achieved with application development tools which utilize an interface through which all references made to the system are symbolic. By its nature the symbolic referencing mechanism prohibits the use of any hardware specific references thereby maintaining hardware independence.

Linear spectral mixture analysis (LSMA) is a widely used technique for subpxiel detection and mixed pixel classification. Due to mathematical tractability it is generally implemented without constraints. However, it has been shown that the constrained LSMA can improve the unconstrained LSMA, specifically in quantification when accurate estimates of abundance fractions are required. When the constrained LSMA is considered, two constraints are generally imposed on abundance fractions, abundance sum-to-one constraint (ASC) and abundance nonnegativity constraint (ANC), referred to as abundance-constrained LSMA (AC-LSMA). A general and common approach to solving the AC-LSMA is to estimate abundance fractions in the sense of least-squares error (LSE) subject to the imposed constraints. Since the LSE is not weighted in accordance with significance of bands, the effect caused by the LSE is assumed to be uniform over all the bands, which is generally not necessarily true. This paper extends the commonly used LSE-based AC-LSMA to weighted LSE-based AC-LSMA with the weighting matrix that is derived from various approaches such as parameter estimation, pattern classification and orthogonal subspace projection (OSP). As demonstrated by experiments, the weighted LSE-based AC-LSMA generally performs better than the commonly used LSE-based ACLSMA where the latter can be considered a special case of the former with the weighting matrix reduced to the identity matrix.

In this paper, a finite-state vector quantizer called Dynamic Finite-State Vector Quantization (DFSVQ) is investigated with regard to its subcodebook construction. In DFSVQ each input vector encoded by a small codebook, called subcodebook, is created from a much larger codebook called supercodebook. The subcodebook is constructed by selecting (reordering procedure) a set of appropriate codevectors from the supercodebook. The performance of the DFSVQ depends on this reordering procedure, therefore, several reordering procedures are introduced and their performances are evaluated in this paper. The reordering procedures that are investigated are the conditional histogram, address prediction, vector prediction, nearest neighbor design, and the frequency usage of codevectors. The performance of the reordering procedures are evaluated by comparing their hit ratios (the number of blocks encoded by the subcodebook) and their computational complexity. Experimental results are presented for both still images and video. It is found that for still images the conditional histogram performs the best and for video the nearest neighbor design performs the best.

Grayscale morphology has been widely used in image processing, especially in noise removal. In this paper, we find an optimal solution for designing a grayscale morphological filter. An adaptive algorithm is developed for determining, from a given class of grayscale morphological filters, a filter which minimizes the mean square error between its output and a desired process. The adaptation using the conventional least mean square algorithm optimizes the grayscale structuring element in a given search area. The performance of noise removal is compared to another class of nonlinear filters, i.e., adaptive and nonadaptive stack-based filters.

In conventional transform coding, a linear transformation generates a set of transform coefficients for each image block, followed by quantization of the transform coefficients and inverse transformation. We show that for a given transform encoder, the conventional decoder employing inverse transformation is a special case of a nonlinear interpolative decoder that performs table lookups to reconstruct the image blocks from the code indexes. In the nonlinear interpolative decoder, each received code index of an image block addresses a particular codebook to fetch a component block. The image block is then reconstructed as the vector sum of the component blocks. Hence with a set of well designed codebooks, this new decoding technique will be superior to the conventional decoder. In this paper, we develop an iterative algorithm for designing a set of locally optimal codebooks. We also present a hybrid decoder which combines conventional decoding with nonlinear interpolative decoding to reduced the memory requirement for codebook storage. Computer simulations with the JPEG image compression algorithm demonstrate that this new decoding technique can decode enhanced quality pictures from the bit stream generated by the standard encoding scheme.
