Even at the conceptual level, the strong coupling between the laser subsystem elements, such as the accelerator, wiggler, optics, and control, greatly complicates the understanding and design of a free-electron laser (FEL). Given the requirements for a high-performance FEL, the coupling between the laser subsystems must be included in the design approach. To address the subsystem coupling, we implemented the concept of an integrated numerical experiment (INEX). Unique features of the INEX approach are consistency and numerical equivalence of experimental diagnostics. The equivalent numerical diagnostics mitigate the major problem of misinterpretation that often occurs when theoretical and experimental data are compared. A complete INEX model has been applied to the 10-micrometers high-extraction-efficiency experiment at Los Alamos and the 0.6-micrometers Burst Mode experiment at Boeing Aerospace. In addition, the agreement between INEX and the experiments is very good. With the INEX approach, it now appears possible to design high-performance FELs for numerous applications. The first full-scale test of the INEX approach is the Los Alamos High-Brightness Accelerator FEL (HIBAF) experiment. Implementation and experimental validation of the INEX concept are discussed.

As the numerical aperture (NA) in optical projection systems increases, the vector nature of the projected electric and magnetic fields becomes more important. Recent advances in off- axis illumination, tilting condenser lenses, and applying spatial filters, as well as phase-shift masks, hold the potential of increased depth of focus. To simulate these techniques in the high- NA regime, we have developed new fast algorithms. The development reported here builds on our recent work (1) extending scalar aerial imaging. The systematic treatment of (1) has now been applied to account for the vector nature of light.

In the authors' previous work, a sequence of image-processing algorithms was developed that was suitable for detecting and classifying ships from panchromatic Quickbird electro-optical satellite Imagery. Presented in this paper are several new algorithms, which improve the performance and enhance the capabilities of the ship detection software, as well as an overview on how land masking is performed. Specifically, this paper describes the new algorithms for enhanced detection including for the reduction of false detects such as glint and clouds. Improved cloud detection and filtering algorithms are described as well as several texture classification algorithms are used to characterize the background statistics of the ocean texture. These detection algorithms employ both cloud and glint removal techniques, which we describe. Results comparing ship detection with and without these false detect reduction algorithms are provided. These are components of a larger effort to develop a low-cost solution for detecting the presence of ships from readily-available overhead commercial imagery and comparing this information against various open-source ship-registry databases to categorize contacts for follow-on analysis.

Studying on the GPS height transformation algorithm to improve the accuracy of GPS height conversion has always been a hotspot in the field of geodesy. At present, there are many methods of converses GPS height into normal height, the most common of which is the method of numerical approximation, and its algorithm is mostly confined to how to choose a suitable function model or statistical model to numerical approximation. Aiming at the singularity of GPS height conversion methods, this article presents a comprehensive approximation algorithm, which combine the functional approximation models with statistical approximation models in order to take full advantage of the regularity of function approximation model and the flexibility of the statistical approximation model. Based on the analysis of the actual engineering data, the results show that the accuracy of GPS height transformation based on the algorithm of integrated approximation approach is superior to the single function transformation model or a single statistical model. At the same time, it also relaxes the selection requirements of function model and statistical model.

An important issue in the advancement of Image Processing and Computer Vision (IP/CV) algorithm development is the ability to test, verify and compare the newly developed algorithm performance to other functionally equivalent algorithms and to ground truth in a complete and meaningful way. In this paper, we explore several criteria to estimate the performance of IP/CV algorithms against databases of synthetic and real data and use statistical analysis to determine performance. Formal system analysis along with Monte Carlo testing is used to rigorously compare these algorithms. A case study is performed on the familiar edge detection algorithms to illustrate the techniques and also the vulnerability of these algorithms to good average performance but in certain cases to very poor performance.

We have previously shown in reference [3] that images of particular objects of interest can be recovered from compressive measurements by minimizing a L2-norm criterion that incorporates prior knowledge of the signal such as its expected spectra. The basis in which the signal is reconstructed was also noted to be an important consideration in the formulation of the solution. In this paper, we further improve this technique by representing the image in a multi-scale domain so that select bands of the transform can be adapted to reference signals from other sources, while improving the overall quality of reconstruction of the full image. It is shown by means of an example that the adaptation not only reduces the overall mean square error of the reconstruction, but also helps to correctly resolve features in the high-resolution image that are not accurately reconstructed by the open-loop algorithm.

Acutance refers to the sharpness and thus the perceptibility of features in an image. Currently available methods for characterization of perceptibility of image features are either highly subjective or statistical. There is a need for a purely objective measure to characterize the perceptibility of image features. This paper proposes a measure of acutance based on gray-level variations across the boundary of an object. An algorithm to calculate the acutance based on region growing and a derivative measure across region boundaries has been designed and implemented. After testing the algorithm on various images, it is shown that this measure can accurately reflect changes in the appearance of objects due to blurring and sharpening. Using this technique, it is possible to quantify the level of enhancement in a digital image by calculating the acutance before and after the enhancement operation.

We have developed a novel approach to performing automatic detection of concealed threat objects in passive MMW imagery of people scanned in a portal setting. It is applicable to the significant class of imaging scanners that use the protocol of having the subject rotate in front of the camera in order to image them from several closely spaced directions. Customary methods of dealing with MMW sequences rely on the analysis of the spatial images in a frame-by-frame manner, with information extracted from separate frames combined by some subsequent technique of data association and tracking over time. We contend that the pooling of information over time in traditional methods is not as direct as can be and potentially less efficient in distinguishing threats from clutter. We have formulated a more direct approach to extracting information about the scene as it evolves over time. We propose an atypical spatio-temporal arrangement of the MMW image data - to which we give the descriptive name Row Evolution Image (REI) sequence. This representation exploits the singular aspect of having the subject rotate in front of the camera. We point out which features in REIs are most relevant to detecting threats, and describe the algorithms we have developed to extract them. We demonstrate results of successful automatic detection of threats, including ones whose faint image contrast renders their disambiguation from clutter very challenging. We highlight the ease afforded by the REI approach in permitting specialization of the detection algorithms to different parts of the subject body. Finally, we describe the execution efficiency advantages of our approach, given its natural fit to parallel processing.

Given the increasingly dense environment in both low-earth orbit (LEO) and geostationary orbit (GEO), a sudden change in the trajectory of any existing resident space object (RSO) may cause potential collision damage to space assets. With a constellation of electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensor platforms and ground radar surveillance systems, it is important to design optimal estimation algorithms for updating nonlinear object states and allocating sensing resources to effectively avoid collisions among many RSOs. Previous work on RSO collision avoidance often assumes that the maneuver onset time or maneuver motion of the space object is random and the sensor management approach is designed to achieve efficient average coverage of the RSOs. Few attempts have included the inference of an object's intent in the response to an RSO's orbital change. We propose a game theoretic model for sensor selection and assume the worst case intentional collision of an object's orbital change. The intentional collision results from maximal exposure of an RSO's path. The resulting sensor management scheme achieves robust and realistic collision assessment, alerts the impending collisions, and identifies early RSO orbital change with lethal maneuvers. We also consider information sharing among distributed sensors for collision alert and an object's intent identification when an orbital change has been declared. We compare our scheme with the conventional (non-game based) sensor management (SM) scheme using a LEO-to-LEO space surveillance scenario where both the observers and the unannounced and unplanned objects have complete information on the constellation of vulnerable assets. We demonstrate that, with adequate information sharing, the distributed SM method can achieve the performance close to that of centralized SM in identifying unannounced objects and making early warnings to the RSO for potential collision to ensure a proper selection of collision avoidance action.
