The limited color spatial acuity of the human visual system is exploited to develop a more efficient algorithm for realistic image synthesis. A screen subdivision ray tracer is modified to control the amount of chromatic and achromatic detail present at the edges in an environment. An opponents color space (previously used to select wavelengths for synthetic image generation) is used to define the chromatic and achromatic channels present in the image. Computational savings achieved by the algorithm are discussed. A perceptual evaluation shows that image quality is not seriously degraded by the use of the technique.

For multisensor fusion systems it is a prerequisite to accurately estimate and correct all systematic errors. Adequate estimation methods only exist if all systematic errors are constant random variables, while in practice they may change with time. When the object states, the systematic errors and the observations vary according to a linear Gaussian system, then one large Kalman filter forms the optimal estimator for the combined state of all object states and all systematic errors. In general the numerical complexity of this Kalman filter prohibits practical application. In order to improve this situation we decouple the large Kalman filter into a number of separate filters: for each object one track maintenance Kalman filter, and for the estimation of all sensor related systematic errors one Kalman-like filter, which we call the Macro filter. The effectiveness of this approach is illustrated through simulations for a simple example.

Finding the shortest path between points on a surface is a challenging global optimization problem. It is difficult to devise an algorithm that is computationally efficient, locally accurate and guarantees to converge to the globally shortest path. In this paper a two stage coarse to the fine approach of finding shortest paths is suggested. In the first stage a fast algorithm is used to obtain an approximation to the globally shortest path. In the second stage the approximation is refined into a locally optimal path. In the first stage we use the fast algorithm introduced by Kiryati and Szekely that combines a 3-D length estimator with graph search. This path is then refined to a shorter geodesic curve by an algorithm that deforms an arbitrary initial curve ending at two given surface points via geodesic curvature shortening flow. The 3D curve shortening flow is transformed into an equivalent 2D one that is implemented using an efficient numerical algorithm for curve evolution with fixed end points, introduced by Kimmel and Sapiro.

Printronix, Inc. uses scanner-based image systems to perform print quality measurements for line-matrix printers. The size of the image samples and image definition required make commercial scanners convenient to use. The image processing is relatively well defined, and we are able to simplify many of the calculations into hardware equations and V code. The process of rapidly prototyping the system using DSP based 'c' code gets the algorithms well defined early in the development cycle. Once a working system is defined. the rest of the process involves splitting the task Lip for the FPGA and the DSP implementation. Deciding which of the two to use. the DSP or the FPGA, is a simple matter of trial benchmarking. There are two kinds of benchmarking: One for speed, and the other for memory. The more memory intensive algorithms should run in the DSP, and the simple real time tasks can use the FPGA most effectively. Once the task is split, we can decide which platform the algorithm should be executed. This involves prototyping all the code in the DSP, then timing various blocks of the algorithm. Slow routines can be optimized using the compiler tools. and if further reduction in time is needed, into tasks that the FPGA can perform.

In this paper we are concerned by authentication of printer technologies from microscopic analysis of paper print. At this scale, a print is made of regularly spaced dots whose shape varies from a print to another and also inside the same document. Thus, dot at the microscopic scale can be considered as an intrinsic signature of printer technologies. Modeling and estimating such a signature for the authentication of printer technologies are really challenging. In this paper, we propose an original modeling of the micrometric scan of document printing. It consists in an extension of the binary response model which takes into account the dot shape. The digital image of a dot is therefore modeled as a set of random pixels distributed following to the so called inverse link function which depends on the center, tone of black, its spreading and its shape. A maximum likelihood estimation algorithm is provided in order to estimate the location, the darkness, the scale and shape parameter of the dot. From experimental results on three different printer technologies (inkjet, laser and offset), we show that the shape parameter is relevant for designing an identification scheme of printer technologies.

In content based image retrieval, systems allow users to ask for objects similar in shape to a query object. However, there is no clear understanding of how computational shape similarity corresponds to human shape similarity. In this paper several shape similarity measures were evaluated on planar, connected, non-occluded binary shapes. Shape similarity using algebraic moments, spline curve distances, cumulative turning angle, signal of curvature and Hausdorff- distance were compared to human similarity judgments on twenty test shapes against a large image database.

A plausible motivation for video tampering is to alter the sequence of events. This goal can be achieved by re-indexing attacks such as frame removal, insertion, or shuffling. In this work, we report on the development of an algorithm to identify and, subject to certain limitations, reverse such acts. At the heart of the algorithm lies the concept of a frame-pair [f, f*]. Frame-pairs are unique in two ways. The first frame is the basis for watermarking of the second frame sometime in the future. A key that is unique to the location of frame f governs frame-pair temporal separation. Watermarking is done by producing a low resolution version of 24-bit frame, spreading it, and then embedding it in the color space of f*. As such, watermarking f* is tantamount to embedding a copy of frame f in a future frame. Having tied one frame, in content and timing, to another frame downstream, frame removal and insertion can be identified and, subject to certain limitations, reversed.

algorithms for synergistically fusing acoustic and optical sensory inputs, thereby mimicking biological attentional processes are described. Manual existing perimeter defense surveillance systems using more than one sensory modality combine different sensors' information to corroborate findings by other sensors and to add data from a second modality. In contrast to how conventional systems work, animals use information from multiple sensory inputs in a way that improves each sensory system's performance. We demonstrated that performance is enhanced when information in one modality is used to focus processing in the other modality (a form of attention). This synergistic bi-modal operation improves surveillance efficacy by focusing auditory and visual "attention" on a particular target or location. algorithms for focusing auditory and visual sensors using detection information were developed. These combination algorithms perform "zoom-with-enhanced-acuity" in both the visual and auditory domains, triggered by detection in either domain. Sensory-input processing algorithms focus on specific locations, indicated by at least one of the modalities. This spatially focused processing emulates biological attention-driven focusing. We showed that given information about the target, the acoustic algorithms were able to achieve over 80% correct target detection at signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of -20 dB and above, as compared with similar performance at SNRs of -10 db and above without target information from another modality. Similarly, the visual algorithm achieved performance of over 80% detection with added noise variance of 0.001 without target indication, but maintained 100% detection at added noise variance of 0.05 when acoustic target information was taken into account.

New frequency response measurement procedures, on-line modal tuning techniques, and off- line modal identification algorithms are developed and applied to the modal identification of the Advanced Structures/Controls Integrated Experiment (ASCIE), a generic segmented optics telescope test-bed representative of future complex space structures. The frequency response measurement procedure simultaneously uses all the actuators to excite the structure and all the sensors to measure the structural response so that all the transfer functions are measured simultaneously. Structural responses to sinusoidal excitations are measured and analyzed to calculate spectral responses. The spectral responses in turn are analyzed as the spectral data become available and, which is new, the results are used to maintain high quality measurements. Data acquisition, processing, and checking procedures are fully automated. As the acquisition of the frequency response progresses, an on-line algorithm keeps track of the actuator force distribution that maximizes the structural response to automatically tune to a structural mode when approaching a resonant frequency. This tuning is insensitive to delays, ill-conditioning, and nonproportional damping. Experimental results show that it is useful for modal surveys even in high modal density regions. For thorough modeling, a constructive procedure is proposed to identify the dynamics of a complex system from its frequency response with the minimization of a least-squares cost function as a desirable objective. This procedure relies on off-line modal separation algorithms to extract modal information and on least-squares parameter subset optimization to combine the modal results and globally fit the modal parameters to the measured data. The modal separation algorithms resolved modal density of 5 modes/Hz in the ASCIE experiment. They promise to be useful in many challenging applications.
