The features of forming a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as applied to the pulse-coded information transfer technique through an optical channel are considered. To maximize a SNR and a range of communication, an optimum receiver resolution time (RRT) should be found and used. An analytical solution as well as an algorithm to calculate the distortion of a pulse, propagating through a cloud layer, and the position and amplitude of a maximum of a recorded signal have been developed. They were realized as an interactive PC program, which calculates the optimum value of RRT and range limit of communication for any parameters of systems and optical channels (atmosphere + cloud).

We have designed a visual flight guidance system that enables manual control of aircraft operations in degraded visual environments down to Cat III, both for take-off and landing. This has been achieved by means of visual guidance cues displayed on a head up display (HUD) and whereas this is not in itself novel, our development methods and approach to verifying its operation we believe are. In order to certify the system as airworthy, compliance with the relevant airworthiness standards defined in 14 CFR part 21 and other related guidance material, needs to be demonstrated. Demonstrating compliance by actually flying the aircraft a statistically appropriate number of times is prohibitively expensive. The challenge in this case was to harmonize existing flight guidance algorithms with a faithful aero model of a new airframe and to demonstrate their effectiveness in a manner that was economically viable. To achieve this, we constructed a Digital Simulation and Verification Environment (DSVE) that hosted a Digital Twin (DT) of the system such that its operation in real conditions could be accurately predicted.

A method for the passive remote monitoring of chemical vapors by differential FTIR radiometry is explored. This approach is based on the use of a double-beam Fourier transform infrared spectrometer optimized for optical subtraction. The method is described with a particular emphasis on its capabilities for differential detection and background suppression. The algorithm developed for on-line detection and quantization of chemical vapor plume is presented and tested. The method has been successfully used to map the integrated path-concentration of a vapor plume of ammonia.

Most color indexing techniques proposed in the literature are similar: images are represented by color histograms, and a metric on the color histogram space is used to determine the similarity of images. In this paper we determine the limits of these color indexing techniques. We propose two functions to measure the discrimination power of indexing techniques: the capacity (how many distinguishable histograms can be stored) and the maximal match number (the maximal number of retrieved images). We derive bounds for these functions. These bounds have two practical aspects. First, they help a user to decide whether color histograms effectively index database images from a given domain. Second, they facilitate the choice of a good threshold for the distance below which histograms are considered similar. Our arguments are based on an analysis of the metrical properties of the histogram space and results from coding theory. The results show that over a large range of reasonable parameters the capacity is very large. Thus, the set of parameters for which color indexing works well can be described as the set of parameters for which the maximal match number is below an application-dependent maximum.

Proton-proton collisions in the LHC accelerator will occur every 25ns. The muon trigger of the CMS experiment will have to analyse data from 200000 channels of RPC chambers every bunch crossing. Special compression algorithm has been developed to transmit the data from the chambers to the trigger electronics through optical fibers. The data flow has been simulated, and the data loss estimate is presented.

In this paper we combine two recently developed multi-scale deconvolution algorithms, known as the scale-time domain method and the sum-of-cumulants domain method. We formulate the deconvolution problem in the scale-cumulant domain using the Scale Transform (ST) and show that the procedure is simpler when the unknown source signal is non-minimum phase and robust if Gaussian noise exists.

dIn North America, approximately 30,000 people annually suffer an aneurismal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Using computerized tomography (CT), the blood is generally not visible after 12 hours. Currently lumbar puncture (LP) results are equivocal for diagnosing SAH largely because of technical limitations in performing a quick and objective evaluation. Having ruptured once, an aneurysm is statistically more likely to rupture again. Therefore, for those individuals with a sentinel (or warning) hemorrhage, detection within the first 12 hours is paramount. We present a diagnostic technology based on visible spectroscopy to quickly and objectively assess low-blood volume SAH from a diagnostic spinal tap. This technology provides clinicians, with the resources necessary for assessing patients with suspected aneurismal SAH beyond the current 12-hour limitation imposed by CT scans. This aids in the improvement of patient care and results in rapid and appropriate treatment of the patient. To perform this diagnosis, we quantify bilirubin and hemoglobin in human CSF over a range of concentrations. Because the bilirubin and hemoglobin spectra overlap quantification is problematic. To solve this problem, two algorithmic approaches are presented: a statistical or a random stochastic component known as Partial Least Square (PLS) and a control theory based mathematical model. These algorithms account for the noise and distortion from blood in CSF leading to the quantification of bilirubin and methemoglobin spectroscopically. The configurations for a hardware platform is introduced, that is portable and user-friendly composed of specific components designed to have the sensitivity and specificity required. This aids in measuring bilirubin in CSF, hemorrhagic-CSF and CSF-like solutions. The prototype uses purpose built algorithms contained within the platform, such that physicians can use it in the hospital and lab as a point of care diagnostic test.

The Deift Parallel Process, based on a multi-computer architecture and constructed with a Multi-Broadcast Interconnection topology, is a 16 processing no&s Multiple Instruction stream, Multiple Data stream computer developed at the Deift University of Technology in 1977 to evaluate software algorithms, architectures and interconnection topologies experimentally. The Processing Elements in the nodes, containing Weitek Floating Point Multiplier/ALU combinations, are going to be interconnected in a full parallel Electro-Optic Communication System. The Routing Elements, containing Transputers, are linked by an optical reconfigurable network, which enables a simultaneous communication between all the REs.

A region-based multi-criterion segmentation algorithm for image sequence coding is described in this paper. It is based on morphological segmentation, motion estimation, and compensation techniques. The concept of multi-criterion is introduced in the traditional gray-level segmentation process, which takes into account the high temporal redundancy. The current image is segmented into two different kinds of regions: homogeneous gray-level regions coded by texture modeling method or homogeneous motion regions represented by motion compensation. No prediction error needs to be transmitted. Contours are simplified by a new non-linear filter. Preliminary experimental results have demonstrated high potential performance, with the combination of the power of contour-texture approach and that of the motion compensation technique, for very low bitrate image sequence coding.

This paper describes a novel approach to quantifying mitochondrial patterns which are typically described using the qualitative terms "diffuse" "aggregated" and are potentially key indicators for an oocyte's health and survival potential post-implantation. An oocyte was isolated in a confocal image and a coarse grid was superimposed upon it. The spatial spectrum was calculated and an aggregation factor was generated. A classifier for healthy cells was developed and verified. The aggregation factor showed a clear distinction between the healthy and unhealthy oocytes. The ultimate goal is to screen oocytes for viability preimplantation, thus improving the outcome of in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments.
