This paper describes a study performed with the objective of investigating Concurrent Constraint Programming (CCP) as the main tool for the design and the implementation of a software path planner. The main features of the path planning are introduced along with some modeling and implementation issues. The CCP approach is motivated by the facility of translating complex models with domain specific features into efficient implementations. In order to use CCP, the path planning is formalized as a constraint satisfaction problem by defining variables, domains, and constraints. The proposed solution is as general as possible, and it is widely applicable in several contexts. A demo application has been implemented, and it is described in this paper. The application comes with a graphical interface that allow the user to define the mission constraints. The output of the application is a path plan, i.e. a list of waypoints that can also be displayed on a geographical map. The estimated path length, fuel consumption, and path risk are given as well.

In this parallel surface rendering algorithm based on dividing cube² on a SIMD machine MasPar MP-1, we address the problem of load balancing and image composition. We divide a 3D array of N_x x N_y x N_z volume data into N_x x N_y columns, each N_z deep. Each processor in the mesh receives a subvolume of such data columns. All processors synchronously traverse its subvolume to determine the voxels intersecting the isosurface. Intersecting voxels are called isovoxels. Partial load balancing distributes the isovoxels contained in a row of processors evenly among the processors in that row to reduce the network traffic and complexity of the rendering phase. Each isovoxel is subdivided into point primitives using dividing cube algorithm. Rendering algorithm transforms the surface points and their normals and projects them into the view plane.

A notion of sparse dual frames for a given non-exact frame is introduced. The sparse dual frame is motivated in a study of compressed sensing problems where signal are sparse with respect to a redundant and coherent dictionary (frames). A sparse-dual-based l(1)-analysis is thereby proposed. We show that sparse dual frames are locally stable. An error bound ensuring the correct signal recovery is obtained. More importantly, solutions to very hard problems in compressed sensing with redundant dictionaries that are otherwise completely unsuccessful by known algorithms of l(1)-synthesis and the l(1)-analysis are seen as satisfactory, by the new sparse-dual-based approach and an alternating iterative algorithm that we propose. Examples are provided.

The goal of host-based intrusion detection is to detect attacks against a sin-le information system. Many host-based intrusion detector systems - especially those that use anomaly detection - use training data to synthesize detectors automatically, that is, the detectors are classifiers created by machine learning algorithms. Regularization, which often improves the performance of machine learning algorithms, has not previously been applied to intrusion detector synthesis. This paper discusses regularization for machine learning-based intrusion detectors, showing how regularization can be accomplished for such systems and providing the results of an empirical evaluation.

Elucidation of the pathogenesis of AIDS is confounded by the finding that few actively infected CD4⁺ cells (1 in 10⁴-10⁵) can be detected in the peripheral blood, even though there is dramatic depletion (often >90%) of CD4⁺ cells as the disease progresses. A sensitive, ³⁵S-based human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) mRNA in situ hybridization technique was coupled with a new detection method, confocal laser scanning microscopy, to examine transcriptionally active HIV-infected cells from individuals at different disease stages. An algorithm for image segmentation and analysis has been developed to determine the proportion of HIV-positive cells. Data obtained using this improved detection method suggest that there are more HIV mRNA-producing cells in HIV-infected individuals than previously thought, based on other detection methods.

This paper presents a variation on our Distance Driven projection and backprojection method in which the inner loop is essentially branchless. The new inner loop structure is highly parallelizable and amenable to vectorization or highly pipelined implementations. We demonstrate that the new loop structure computes the same results as the original method to within numerical precision.

Attempts to recover images from objects which diffuse radiation pose an especially challenging problem in terms of defining a suitable reconstruction algorithm and with regard to identifying an appropriate computing environment for efficient processing. In this paper we consider both issues and, in particular, describe results of an algebraic technique for imaging the interior of objects which diffuse penetrating radiation using a new multicomputer environment. Two important issues which arise when considering the numerical solution of ultra large problems are the numerical precision achieved and the overall computing efficiency. Our interest in this problem concerns the possibility of obtaining 3-D optical images of tissue which could identify the availability of oxygen by evaluating oxygen- dependent changes in the near infrared spectrum of hemoglobin. These studies were motivated by recent reports from our group and others, which showed promising results for imaging in dense scattering media given only diffusely scattered signals. In our model we assume the use of an NIR laser to provide the input radiation and suitable detectors to measure both transmission and backscatter. In our present work we assume a simple Markov process model for the way in which the energy travels in the medium, but it should be noted that the reconstruction technique we propose can use any model, including nonlinear as well as linear effects, and higher order processes. Current simulations are in 2-D but the methods are easily extended to 3-D. The algorithms we propose are more closely related to algebraic reconstruction algorithms such as ART, SIRT, and SART than to algorithms based on the Born and Rytov approximations such as used for tomographic imaging with diffracting sources. Our algorithms are a significant departure from those based on these standard algebraic methods. We assume only a probabilistic knowledge of the path of the radiation, and minimal knowledge of the absorption

In this paper, we present an inversion method to enhance a binary decision tree classifier using boundary search of training samples. We want to enhance the training at those points which are close to the boundaries. Selection of these points is based on the Euclidean distance from those centroids close to classification boundaries. The enhanced training using these selected data was compared with training using randomly selected samples. We also applied this method to improve the classification of pap smear screening data.
