When wireless sensors are capable of variable transmit power and are battery powered, it is important to select the appropriate transmit power level for the node. Lowering the transmit power of the sensor nodes imposes a natural clustering on the network and has been shown to improve throughput of the network. However, a common transmit power level is not appropriate for inhomogeneous networks. A possible fitness-based approach, motivated by an evolutionary optimization technique, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is proposed and extended in a novel way to determine the appropriate transmit power of each sensor node. A distributed version of PSO is developed and explored using experimental fitness to achieve an approximation of least-cost connectivity.

Proton-proton collisions in the LHC accelerator will occur every 25ns. The muon trigger of the CMS experiment will have to analyse data from 200000 channels of RPC chambers every bunch crossing. Special compression algorithm has been developed to transmit the data from the chambers to the trigger electronics through optical fibers. The data flow has been simulated, and the data loss estimate is presented.

We proposed a new reconstruction algorithm for image reconstruction from helical cone-beam data only within the Tam-Danielsson window, thus allowing the potential reduction of radiation dose to patients. The new algorithm can be expressed as two terms. The first term dominates the contribution to the reconstructed image, and the second term provides only a small correction. In fact. such a correction is generally negligible as compared to that from the first term and introduces a detectable DC-type shift to the reconstructed images only in the situations where the ratio between the size of field of view and the helical radius approaches to 0.625, which is the limit to the validity of the first term. Based on the Grangeat formula. we have developed an algorithm to calculate the correction (i.e., the second) term from the data within the window.

This paper describes a study performed with the objective of investigating Concurrent Constraint Programming (CCP) as the main tool for the design and the implementation of a software path planner. The main features of the path planning are introduced along with some modeling and implementation issues. The CCP approach is motivated by the facility of translating complex models with domain specific features into efficient implementations. In order to use CCP, the path planning is formalized as a constraint satisfaction problem by defining variables, domains, and constraints. The proposed solution is as general as possible, and it is widely applicable in several contexts. A demo application has been implemented, and it is described in this paper. The application comes with a graphical interface that allow the user to define the mission constraints. The output of the application is a path plan, i.e. a list of waypoints that can also be displayed on a geographical map. The estimated path length, fuel consumption, and path risk are given as well.

Hierarchical levels of details (HLODs) have proven to be an efficient way to visualize complex environments and models even in an out-of-core system. Large objects are partitioned into a spatial hierarchy and on each node a level of detail is generated for efficient view-dependent rendering. To ensure correct matching between adjacent nodes in the hierarchy care has to be taken to prevent cracks along the cuts. This either leads to severe simplification constraints at the cuts and thus to a significantly higher number of triangles or the need for a costly runtime stitching of these nodes. In this paper we present an out-of-core visualization algorithm that overcomes this problem by filling the cracks generated by the simplification algorithm with appropriately shaded fat borders. Furthermore, several minor yet important improvements of previous approaches are made. This way we come up with a simple nevertheless efficient view-dependent rendering technique which allows for the natural incorporation of state-of-the-art culling, simplification, compression and prefetching techniques.

Conflict between groups of armed men is as old as recorded history. Effective reasoning and decision-making are fundamental to the successful execution of military operations. These activities are of paramount importance, given the high-stakes nature of conflict;most especially in this modern era of asymmetric threats, and unconventionally armed rogue states. Yet as high as the stakes are, there does not exist a sufficiently formal military theory of reasoning and decision-making that instantiates modern war-fighting doctrine. Large bodies of knowledge on reasoning and decision-making exist, but they are not integrated, and they (to the author's knowledge) have not been cast effectively into a military context. Herein, I describe a new theory of military rationality which fully captures the reasoning and decision-making processes of homo militius, military man. The goal of the third generation wargaming effort at the Air Force Research Laboratory's Information Directorate is to produce a high-fidelity simulation of conflict environments in order to facilitate a new brand of highly immersive training for our war-fighters and supporting personnel. This environment will be populated by a new breed of intelligent agents that we affectionately call ASC-ME's (Advanced Synthetic Characters for Military Environments). I shall briefly highlight the philosophical foundations for the construction of such entities, and the formal techniques by which they may be modelled and engineered.

Registration of individual images remains a significant problem in the generation of accurate images collected using coherent imaging systems. An investigation of the performance of eight distinct image registration algorithms was conducted using data collected from a coherent optical imaging system developed by the Air Force Research Laboratories, Sensors Division, ARFL/SNJT. A total of 400 images of three distinct scenes were collected by SRJT and made available to the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) for this study. Scenery was collected at 3 and 10 kilometers of wheeled vehicles supporting resolution and uniform target boards. The algorithms under study were developed by scientists and engineers at AFRL, and had varying levels of performance in terms of image miss-registration and execution time. These eight algorithms were implemented on a general-purpose computer running the MATLAB simulation environment. The algorithms compared included: block-match, cross-correlation, cross-search, directional-search, gradient-based, hierarchical-block, three-step, and vector-block methods. It was found that the cross-correlation, gradient-based and vector-block search techniques typically had the lowest error metric. The vector-block and cross-correlation methods proved to have the fastest execution times, while not suffering significant error degradation when estimating the registration shift of the test images.

Untethered, underwater sensors, deployed for event detection and tracking and operating in an autonomous mode will be required to self-assemble into a configuration, which optimizes their coverage, effectively minimizing the probability that an event in the target area goes undetected. This organized, cooperative, and autonomous, spreading-out of the sensors is complicated due to sensors localized communication. A given sensor will not in general have position and velocity information for all sensors, but only for those in its communication area. A possible approach to this problem, motivated by an evolutionary optimization technique, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is proposed and extended in a novel way. A distributed version of PSO is developed. A distributed version of PSO is explored using experimental fitness to address the coverage problem in a two dimensional area.

Cellular Neural Networks (CNN) provides fast parallel computational capability for image processing applications. The behavior of the CNN is defined by two template matrices. In this paper, adjustment of these template-matrix coefficients have been realized using supervised learning algorithm based on back-propagation technique and wavelet function. Back-propagation algorithm has been modified for dynamic behavior of CNN. Wavelet function is utilized to provide the activation function derivation in this learning algorithm. The supervised learning algorithm is then executed to obtain a compact CNN architecture, called as Wave-CNN. The proposed new learning algorithm and Wave-CNN architecture performance have been tested for 2D image processing applications.

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), Edgewood Chemical and Biological Center (ECBC) and ITT Industries Advanced Engineering and Sciences Division (AES) have been collaborating on the transitioning and subsequent development of a short-range, non-contact Raman lidar system specifically designed to detect and identify chemical agents on the battlefield. [The instrument, referred to as LISA (Laser Interrogation of Surface Agents), will the subject of an accompanying paper.] As part of this collaboration, BNL has the responsibility for developing a spectral database (library) of surrogates and precursors for use with LISA's pattern recognition algorithms. In this paper, the authors discuss the phenomenon of UV Raman and resonance-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, the development of an instrument-independent Raman spectral library, and highlight the exploitable characteristics present in the acquired spectral signatures that suggest potential utility in our country's efforts on Homeland Security.
