This study focuses on a fluid mechanics approach utilizing the Herschel-Bulkley constitutive equation to develop a theoretical model for predicting the behavior of field-controllable electro-rheological (ER) and magneto-rheological (Na) fluid dampers. The aim of this research is to provide an accurate theoretical model for analysis, design, and development of control algorithms for ER/MR fluid dampers. The Herschel-Bulkley quasi-steady analysis is extended to include the effect of fluid compressibility. The major advantage of the proposed model is its dependency on only the geometric and material properties of the device. The theoretical results are validated by an experimental study. It is demonstrated that the proposed fluid mechanics-based dynamic model can effectively predict the behavior of field-controllable fluid dampers.

We present an algorithm based on hidden Markov models (HMM) to detect several types of unexploded ordinance (UXO). We use the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images simulated for 155 mm artillery shell, 2.75 in rocket and 105 mm mortar to generate the codebook. The algorithm is used on the data collected at Yuma Proving ground (YPG). YPG is seeded with several types of UXOs for testing purposes. The data is collected using an ultra wideband SAR mounted on a telescoping boom to simulate the airborne radar. The algorithm has detected all the targets for which it is trained for and it also detected other UXOs that are similar in shape.

We consider the problem of adaptive modulation and receiver design for DS-CDMA fading channels with imperfect channel state information. The goal is to adapt the geometry of the signal constellation within the subspace spanned by a small number of spreading codes (multicoding) in order to maximize throughput, minimize power consumption, or control bit error rate in the presence of uncertainty regarding instantaneous channel state information. We study two possible cost functions based on J-divergence and investigate their relationship to effective system capacity via bounds on the mutual information between the channel input and output given an estimate of the channel state information. The bounds will be used in future analytical and simulation studies to evaluate the performance improvement associated with the proposed adaptive modulation scheme.

The MUlti Sensor Trial 2000 experiment was a multi-platform remote sensing deployment in Cairns Australia. Included in the deployment were both visible and infrared airborne hyperspectral images. The University of Hawaii's Airborne Hyperspectral Imager represented the thermal infrared portion of the data collect. The ability to discriminate various targets using the thermal infrared was explored. Consequent data processing involved separating targets from clutter using matched filters. In addition, a preliminary atmospheric correction algorithm was developed based on the ISIS algorithm used in SEBASS.

In wireless communication systems, power control is a popular technique that can be employed to greatly increase system performance. The general idea is to adjust the transmitted power of each user based on channel characteristics (e.g. path-loss and shadowing) so that each user is received with his/her desired signal-to-interference ratio. Traditional approaches to power control are generally derived assuming that the pertinent channel characteristic on which the power control algorithms are based can be measured accurately. However, due to the effects of the multipath fading and the. additive noise inherent to the wireless channel, there can be significant errors in measurements of the average received power. In this paper, the error statistics for average power measurements are considered;in particular, the probability distribution of the value of the average received power at the time of interest conditioned on an outdated measurement is obtained. The resulting expression should have high general utility in the analysis of wireless communication systems;. however, in this paper. this expression is employed in the design of optimum power control algorithms that minimize the average transmitted power required to achieve a desired outage probability for a wireless link. It is demonstrated that power control algorithms that accurately take into account uncertainty in the average power measurements can display significant gains over those that employ simple energy margins or approximate models for such purposes.

The benefits of an all-weather day-night deep battlespace reconnaissance capability on a penetrating platform are introduced and synthetic aperture radar is identified as a sensor technology which may offer this capability. However, certain risks are apparent in synthetic aperture radar operation in this type of application. A programme of applied research and technology demonstration has therefore been put in place to mitigate these risks. The programme began with a radar design study phase, aimed at a pod-mounted system on a Tornado aircraft and guided by an outline radar requirement. The pod facility in which the radar will be carried is presented, along with the outline radar requirement, and followed by some general results of the kind of parametric analysis undertaken in the design study. Finally, some recent investigations into the effects of uncompensated aircraft motion on SAR image quality are given. In conclusion, the programme is seen to be based on a very sound technical footing and should offer high quality, proven advice on the capability that this type of radar mounted on a fast jet reconnaissance aircraft can offer.

In this paper the design of a high-throughput imaging spectrometer for use in astronomical applications is proposed and investigated. The method of spectral separation used in this new design does not rely on dispersion through a grating or path length difference in an interferometer. Instead, the chromatic aberration found in a common lens is used to process the input scene through many different spectral point-spread functions, which produce a collection of broadband images. The spectral separation is achieved through a spectral/spatial recovery algorithm. Because there is no grating to block the light or no beam-splitter to reflect it back out of the telescope, a system built on this principle of spectral separation can achieve a throughput in excess of 90%. The spectral diversity in the point-spread functions is achieved by changing the distance between the lenses and detector in the imaging system. The result of these changes is a different chromatic aberration for each wavelength. From a set of measurements taken with different chromatic aberrations, a spectral/spatial recovery algorithm is developed that is capable of extracting spectral information from a set of broadband images that have been processed through different realizations of chromatic aberration. A point design for this spectral separation concept is presented and tested through simulation. The algorithm is tested using simulated scene data from the point design of a small-extended object and a point source.

A fundamental task in video analysis is to organize and index multimedia data in a meaningful manner so as to facilitate user access for tasks such as browsing and retrieval. This paper addresses the problem of automatic index generation of movie databases based on audiovisual information. In particular, given a movie we first extract key movie events including two-speaker dialog scenes, multiple-speaker dialog scenes and hybrid scenes by using the proposed window-based sweep algorithm and the K-means clustering algorithm. Following event detection, the identity of each individual speaker in a dialog scene is recognized based on a statistical maximum likelihood approach. The identification relies on the likelihood ratio calculation between the incoming speech data and Gaussian mixture models of the speakers and the background. It is evident that the event and the speaker identity information will serve as a crucial part of the movie index table. Preliminary experimental results show that, by integrating multiple media information, we can obtain robust and meaningful event detection and speaker identification results.

The Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) is an effective way to analyze nonstationary signals and to localize and characterize singularities. Fast algorithms have already been developed to compute the CWT at integer time points and dyadic or integer scales. We propose here a new method that is based on a B-spline expansion of both the signal and the analysis wavelet and that allows the CWT computation at arbitrary scales. Its complexity is O(N), where N represents the size of the input signal;in other words, the cost is independent of the scale factor. Moreover;the algorithm lends itself well to a parallel implementation.

A practical method for creating a high dimensional index structure that adapts to the data distribution and scales well with the database size, is presented. Typical media descriptors, such as texture features, are high dimensional and are not uniformly distributed in the feature space. The performance of many existing methods degrade if the data is not uniformly distributed. The proposed method offers an efficient solution to this problem. First, the data's marginal distribution along each dimension is characterized using a Gaussian mixture model. The parameters of this model are estimated using the well known Expectation-Maximization (EM) method. These model parameters can also be estimated sequentially for on-line updating. Using the marginal distribution information, each of the data dimensions can be partitioned such that each bin contains approximately an equal number of objects. Experimental results on a real image texture data set are presented. Comparisons with existing techniques, such as the well known VA-File, demonstrate a significant overall improvement.
