Time-to-market and implementation cost are high-priority considerations in the automation of digital hardware design. Nowadays, digital signal processing applications are implemented into fixed-point architectures due to its advantage of manipulating data with lower word-length (WL). Thus, floating-point to fixed point conversion is mandatory. However, this conversion is translated into optimizing the integer word length (IWL) and fractional word length (FWL). Optimizing the IWL can significantly reduce the cost when the application is tolerant to a low probability of overflows. In this paper, we propose a new IWL optimization algorithm that exploits selective simulation technique to reduce both the implementation cost and optimization time. The efficiency of the algorithm is illustrated through experiments, where 17 to 22 % of cost reduction with respect to interval arithmetic and acceleration factor up to 617 with respect to classical max-1 algorithm are reported.

This paper proposes a point-based rendering pipeline for indirect illumination for environment lighting. The method improves the efficiency of the algorithm used in the previous studies that calculate direct illumination on all the points in the scene which is prohibitively expensive for environment lighting because it requires a hemispherical integration for each point to compute direct illumination. The proposed rendering pipeline reduces the number of direct illumination computations by introducing approximations and careful selection of points on which indirect illumination is calculated. More specifically, the rendering pipeline first selects primary visible points on which indirect illumination is calculated from the point hierarchy. A micro-buffer is rasterized for each primary visible point to identify secondary visible points whose direct illumination affects indirect illumination of a primary visible point. Dependency of those points is analyzed and approximations are introduced to reduce the number of points on which micro-buffer rasterization is executed to calculate direct illumination. After direct illumination is obtained for those points, direct illumination on all of the primary and secondary visible points is calculated by illumination propagation without rasterizing any micro-buffer. The method can be used for a dynamic scene if it is combined with dynamic point hierarchy update.

Finally, the improved algorithm is applied in the university curriculum management, which uses students' academic records as data source to mining the hidden curriculum related rules. And other relevant metrics such as lift, all confidence and cosine are introduced to verify the correlation of association rules. These will be significance to provide the significance information for teaching management.

According to the characteristics of actual production of discrete manufacturing enterprises, a class of new practical job shop scheduling problem was proposed in this paper. It is called nonstandard job shop scheduling problem. The detailed description of nonstandard job shop scheduling problem is presented. A nonstandard job shop scheduling algorithm was designed. The objective of the algorithm is minimizing the maximal completion time of all operations to ensure all jobs can be processing completed as soon as possible. The nonstandard job shop scheduling algorithm adapts the engineering practice, and it can find the better solution in polynomial complexity. The feasibility and efficiency of the algorithm was verified through an example.

Traditionally, individual location has been difficult to utilize, due to a lack of precise positioning technologies. Now, with location-aware technologies integrated into lightweight mobile devices such as sensor nodes, location-based services are becoming a phenomenon in mobile services. These nodes, however, can potentially reveal sensitive and private information about individuals. In most location-aware applications such as personal navigations, location privacy is an issue. In this paper, new finding about generating efficient navigation instruction for imprecise location known as imprecise navigation is discussed. An algorithm called privacy-aware personal navigation algorithm is introduced and two types of navigational directions (relative and cardinal direction) are used for comparison. The efficiency of the algorithms has been analyzed based on its navigational performance and privacy protection. Hence, this research has the potential to support both protecting location privacy and generating better navigational instruction for imprecise navigation.

The Chebyshev-Shamanskii Method for Solving Systems of Nonlinear Equations

We present a method, based on the Chebyshev third-order algorithm and accelerated by a Shamanskii-like process, for solving nonlinear systems of equations. We show that this new method has a quintic convergence order. We will also focus on efficiency of high-order methods and more precisely on our new Chebyshev-Shamanskii method. We also identify the optimal use of the same Jacobian in the Shamanskii process applied to the Chebyshev method. Some numerical illustrations will confirm our theoretical analysis.

The collection of kinematic data with a head-worn sensor is a promising approach for swimming data analysis in the context of athlete support systems. We present a new approach of analyzing these data and describe a system that segments the lanes of a swimming session and classifies the swimming style of each lane. Special emphasis was put on the algorithm efficiency and the analysis of the resource demands to be able to port the implementation to an embedded microcontroller. For developing the system, data of twelve subjects was collected. The data incorporated two different turn styles that mark the end of a lane as well as the four main swimming styles backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle. All turns were successfully identified from the turn detection. Our fully automatic swimming style classification reached a classification rate of 95.0%. The results from the resource consumption analysis can be used to support the decision for the embedded target hardware of a head-worn swimming training system.

Routing algorithms for wireless sensor networks are often evaluated through simulations in order to measure the lifetime of the network and the efficiency of the algorithm regarding energy consumption. Some particular communication models with their parameters' set are used to implement the simulation and are rarely identical. We exhibit two kinds of performance sensitivity regarding simulations: the first one concerns the communication model itself and the second one is generated by the parameters of the communication model. We provide a generalized model that covers very different situations and we state the routing problem as a linear programming problem in order to measure the absolute efficiency of the algorithms with different models and parameter values. Our experiments run using two routing protocols, LEACH and Flow Augmentation, showed that different models or parameters can lead to significantly different results and conclusions. We tried to characterize the origin of the performance sensitivity in each case.

An algorithm for constructing Tanner graphs of non-binary irregular quasi-cyclic LDPC codes is introduced. It employs a new method for selection of edge labels allowing control over the code's non-binary ACE spectrum and resulting in low error-floor. The efficiency of the algorithm is demonstrated by generating good codes of short to moderate length over small fields, outperforming codes generated by the known methods.
