Background: Post-COVID-19 condition (colloquially known as "long COVID-19") characterized as postacute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 has no universal clinical case definition. Recent efforts have focused on understanding long COVID-19 symptoms, and electronic health record (EHR) data provide a unique resource for understanding this condition. The introduction of the International Classification ofDiseases,Tenth Revision ( ICD-10 ) code U09.9 for "Post COVID-19 condition, unspecified" to identify patients with long COVID-19 has provided a method of evaluating this condition in EHRs;however, the accuracy of this code is unclear. Objective: This study aimed to characterize the utility and accuracy of the U09.9 code across 3 health care systems-the Veterans Health Administration, the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center-against patients identified with long COVID-19 via a chart review by operationalizing the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) definitions. Methods: Patients who were COVID-19 positive with either a U07.1 ICD-10 code or positive polymerase chain reaction test within these health care systems were identified for chart review. Among this cohort, we sampled patients based on two approaches: (1) with a U09.9 code and (2) without a U09.9 code but with a new onset long COVID-19-related ICD-10 code, which allows us to assess the sensitivity of the U09.9 code. To operationalize the long COVID-19 definition based on health agency guidelines, symptoms were grouped into a "core" cluster of 11 commonly reported symptoms among patients with long COVID-19 and an extended cluster that captured all other symptoms by disease domain. Patients having >= 2 symptoms persisting for >= 60 days that were new onset after their COVID-19 infection, with >= 1 symptom in the core cluster, were labeled as having long COVID-19 per chart review. Background Understanding occurrence and timing of second events (recurrence and second primary cancer) is essential for cancer specific survival analysis. However, this information is not readily available in administrative data. Methods Alberta Cancer Registry, physician claims, and other administrative data were used. Timing of second event was estimated based on our developed algorithm. For validation, the difference, in days between the algorithm estimated and the chart-reviewed timing of second event. Further, the result of Cox-regression modeling cancer-free survival was compared to chart review data. Results Majority (74.3%) of the patients had a difference between the chart-reviewed and algorithm-estimated timing of second event falling within the 0-60 days window. Kaplan-Meier curves generated from the estimated data and chart review data were comparable with a 5-year second-event-free survival rate of 75.4% versus 72.5%. Conclusion The algorithm provided an estimated timing of second event similar to that of the chart review.

BackgroundThe use of national medico-administrative databases for epidemiological studies has increased in the last decades. In France, the Healthcare Expenditures and Conditions Mapping (HECM) algorithm has been developed to analyse and monitor the morbidity and economic burden of 58 diseases. We aimed to assess the performance of the HECM in identifying different conditions in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) using data from the REIN registry (the French National Registry for patients with ESKD).MethodsWe included all patients over 18 years of age who started renal replacement therapy in France in 2018. Five conditions with a similar definition in both databases were included (ESKD, diabetes, human immunodeficiency virus [HIV], coronary insufficiency, and cancer). The performance of each SNDS algorithm was assessed using sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive values (PPVs), negative predictive values (NPVs), and Cohen's kappa *** total 5,971 patients were included. Among them, 81% were identified as having ESKD in both databases. Diabetes was the condition with the best performance, with a sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and Kappa coefficient all over 80%. Cancer had the lowest level of agreement with a Kappa coefficient of 51% and a high specificity and high NPV (94% and 95%). The conditions for which the definition in the HECM included disease-specific medications performed better in our *** HECM showed good to very good concordance with the REIN database information overall, with the exception of cancer. Further validation of the HECM tool in other populations should be performed.

validation of Remote-Sensing algorithms for Diffuse Attenuation of Downward Irradiance Using BGC-Argo Floats

Estimates of the diffuse attenuation coefficient (K-d) at two different wavelengths and band-integrated (PAR) were obtained using different published algorithms developed for open ocean waters spanning in type from explicit-empirical, semi-analytical and implicit-empirical and applied to data from spectral radiometers on board six different satellites (MODIS-Aqua, MODIS-Terra, VIIRS-SNPP, VIIRS-JPSS, OLCI-Sentinel 3A and OLCI-Sentinel 3B). The resultant K(d)s were compared to those inferred from measurements of radiometry from sensors on board autonomous profiling floats (BGC-Argo). Advantages of BGC-Argo measurements compared to ship-based ones include: 1. uniform sampling in time throughout the year, 2. large spatial coverage, and 3. lack of shading by platform. Over 5000 quality-controlled matchups between K(d)s derived from float and from satellite sensors were found with values ranging from 0.01 to 0.67 m(-1). Our results show that although all three algorithm types provided similarly ranging values of K-d to those of the floats, for most sensors, a given algorithm produced statistically different K-d distributions from the two others. algorithm results diverged the most for low K-d (clearest waters). algorithm biases were traced to the limitations of the datasets the algorithms were developed and trained with, as well as the neglect of sun angle in some algorithms. This study highlights: 1. the importance of using comprehensive field-based datasets (such as BGC-Argo) for algorithm development, 2. the limitation of using radiative-transfer model simulations only for algorithm development, and 3. the potential for improvement if sun angle is taken into account explicitly to improve empirical K-d algorithms. Recent augmentation of profiling floats with hyper-spectral radiometers should be encouraged as they will provide additional constraints to develop algorithms for upcoming missions such as NASA's PACE and SBG and ESA's CHIME, all of which will include a hyper

Verification and validation of Hybridspectral Radiometry Obtained from an Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) in the Open and Coastal Oceans

The hardware and software capabilities of the compact-profiling hybrid instrumentation for radiometry and ecology (C-PHIRE) instruments on an unmanned surface vessel (USV) are evaluated. Both the radiometers and USV are commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) products, with the latter being only minimally modified to deploy the C-PHIRE instruments. The hybridspectral C-PHIRE instruments consist of an array of 18 multispectral microradiometers with 10 nm wavebands spanning 320-875 nm plus a hyperspectral compact grating spectrometer (CGS) with 2048 pixels spanning 190-1000 nm. The C-PHIRE data were acquired and processed using two architecturally linked software packages, thereby allowing lessons learned in one to be applied to the other. Using standard data products and unbiased statistics, the C-PHIRE data were validated with those from the well-established compact-optical profiling system (C-OPS) and verified with the marine optical buoy (MOBY). Agreement between algorithm variables used to estimate colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorption and chlorophyll a concentration were also validated. Developing and operating novel technologies, such as the C-PHIRE series of instruments, deployed on a USV increase the frequency and coverage of optical observations, which are required to fully support the present and next-generation validation exercises in radiometric remote sensing of aquatic ecosystems.

BackgroundDetermining the primary indication of a surgical procedure can be useful in identifying patients undergoing elective surgery where shared decision-making is recommended. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate an algorithm to identify patients receiving the following combinations of surgical procedure and primary indication as part of a study to promote shared decision-making: (1) knee arthroplasty to treat knee osteoarthritis (KOA);(2) hip arthroplasty to treat hip osteoarthritis (HOA);(3) spinal surgery to treat lumbar spinal stenosis (SpS);and (4) spinal surgery to treat lumbar herniated disc (HD).MethodsConsecutive surgical procedures performed by participating spine, hip, and knee surgeons at four sites within an integrated care network were included. Study staff reviewed electronic medical records to ascertain a "gold standard" determination of the procedure and primary indication status. Electronic algorithms consisting of ICD-10 and CPT codes for each combination of procedure and indication were then applied to records for each case. The primary measures of validity for the algorithms were the sensitivity and specificity relative to the gold standard *** surgeons performed 790 procedures included in this study. The sensitivity of the algorithms in determining whether a surgical case represented one of the combinations of procedure and primary indication ranged from 0.70 (HD) to 0.92 (KOA). The specificity ranged from 0.94 (SpS) to 0.99 (HOA, KOA).ConclusionThe electronic algorithm was able to identify all four procedure/primary indication combinations of interest with high specificity. Additionally, the sensitivity for the KOA cases was reasonably high. For HOA and the spine conditions, additional work is needed to improve the sensitivity of the algorithm to identify the primary indication for each case.

Atmospheric and sunglint correction for retrieving chlorophyll-a in a productive tropical estuarine-lagoon system using Sentinel-2 MSI imagery

Remote monitoring of chlorophyll-a (chla) has been widely used to evaluate the trophic state of inland and coastal waters, however, there is still much uncertainty in the algorithms applied in different optical water types. The influence of different atmospheric correction (AC) processors, which can also provide correction for sunglint and adjacency effects, on the retrieved chla is poorly understood. In this study, state-of-the-art atmospheric correction and chla algorithms are evaluated using Sentinel-2 MSI imagery in the Mundau-Manguaba Estuarine-Lagoon System (MMELS), a productive tropical system that consists of two turbid lagoons of different optical water types (OWT). We compared the performance of six AC processors, with the addition of sunglint correction for two of them, with field measured water reflectance. There was difficulty in correcting for the atmospheric effects, especially for bands 2, 3 and 8A. Overall, C2X showed the best performance over MMELS, but with sunglint correction, ACOLITE and GRS provided the most consistent water reflectance (rho(w)). Sunglint correction might be essential for retrieving accurate rho(w) in most low-latitude water bodies. We also found that in Mundau, the dense urban area surrounding it likely caused heavy adjacency effects in the satellite-retrieved reflectance, and thus correction for it is necessary. We also compared the performance of six chla algorithms recommended for the OWTs present in MMELS in addition to a widely applied and a global chla algorithm in retrieving this variable using both field and satellite reflectance, in this case corrected with the three best performing processors. For the in situ data, most algorithms performed well in Manguaba lagoon, while in Mundau lagoon the semi-analytical NIR-red ratio (2SAR) algorithm was the most consistent model, and in both cases the locally calibrated algorithms outperformed the global algorithm. Entrack: Probabilistic Spherical Regression with Entropy Regularization for Fiber Tractography

White matter tractography, based on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance images, is currently the only available in vivo method to gather information on the structural brain connectivity. The low resolution of diffusion MRI data suggests to employ probabilistic methods for streamline reconstruction, i.e., for fiber crossings. We propose a general probabilistic model for spherical regression based on the Fisher-von-Mises distribution, which efficiently estimates maximum entropy posteriors of local streamline directions with machine learning methods. The optimal precision of posteriors for streamlines is determined by an information-theoretic technique, the expected log-posterior agreement concept. It relies on the requirement that the posterior distributions of streamlines, inferred on retest measurements of the same subject, should yield stable results within the precision determined by the noise level of the data source.

Assessment of a Claims-Based ICD-9 and ICD-10 Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw algorithm in the United States

Purpose: Medication-related osteonecrosis of jaw (MRONJ) is associated with certain therapies. Pharmacoepidemiologic studies often rely on electronic healthcare data to adverse events following drug exposure. Few studies have developed and validated claims based MRONJ identification algorithms. This study assessed the performance of claims based MRONJ algorithms by chart review of potential cases among postmenopausal women and women with postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO).;Methods: Among PM and PMO women sourced from a large US commercial health insurance database affiliated with Optum, potential cases were identified by International Classification Diseases, 9th and 10th Revisions (ICD-9, ICD-10) diagnosis codes;200 were selected for retrieval, with the goal of obtaining 100 charts in each coding era. Procured charts were redacted and then reviewed by an oral surgeon who determined case status. Positive predictive values and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated overall, by cohorts, and coding eras. Baseline characteristics were assessed. Two potential algorithm refinements were explored: a restricted set of ICD codes;requiring antibiotic use after MRONJ diagnosis.;Results: A total of 1273 potential cases were identified. Of the 200 potential cases selected, 104 (52%) were procured, and six cases were confirmed (PPV 5.8%, 95% CI 2.2, Baseline characteristics were largely similar across all strata. Potential algorithm refinements yielded marginal PPV improvement.;Conclusion: This study identified a small number of confirmed cases, and the resulting PPVs were low, but consistent with reported studies. Potential algorithm refinements yielded minimal improvements. To our knowledge, this study is the first to report on the identification of MRONJ using ICD-10 codes in the US.

A method for predicting ITS cooperative applications performances

Vehicular cooperation taking place in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) aims to solve traffic issues or to improve road safety for vehicles and vulnerable road users. Such cooperation is achieved through distributed applications running in the vehicular network (VANET), composed of communicating units in vehicles and infrastructure. For safety and legal reasons, it is expected that ITS services reach a satisfactory level of efficiency in the context they are deployed. However, predicting the behavior of distributed applications running in dynamic topologies remains a complex problem, which limits their deployment. In this paper, we propose a method able to predict the performances of cooperative ITS (C-ITS) applications in dynamic vehicular networks. It concerns applications relying on messages exchanges between close vehicles or between vehicles and infrastructure. The proposed method is based on an analysis of the application with respect to the vehicular traffic for determining the conditions ensuring the success of its underlying distributed algorithms and protocols. This is formalized as performances properties depending on the network dynamic. It becomes then easy to check whether these conditions are fulfilled or not in a given road traffic, either captured (and anonymized) for an existing road or expected for a new one. Thanks to an appropriate modeling, the conditions are sought and the performances of the C-ITS applications are predicted. We believe that our approach fills a gap between formal studies, VANET simulations and road tests. It will be of particular interest for the deployment of C-ITS applications. This is illustrated by several use-cases studied in realistic conditions.
