As people tend to integrate technology more and more in their lives, one of the most evident aspects which has a great impact on their learning methods are the E-learning platforms which provide interactive means to develop new skills in problem-solving topics. The development of an Elearning platform that simplifies the way in which users engage with the information while simultaneously enhancing their level of comprehension is, without a question, the fastest and most effective strategy. Trend, in matter of learning techniques, has also brought new challenges and opportunities to enhance assimilation of information. Thus, during the process of learning, focus has to be actively maintained through a series of stimuli. algorithm visualization blended with Artificial Intelligence is the solution that the paper intends to present as a reaction to the actual inclination.

The modality effect in multimedia learning suggests that pictures are best accompanied by audio explanations rather than text, but this finding has not been replicated in computing education. We investigate which instructional modality works best as an accompaniment for algorithm visualizations. In a randomized controlled trial, learners were split into three conditions who viewed an instructional video on Dijkstra's algorithm, with diagrams accompanied by audio, text, or both. We find neither a modality effect in favor of the audio condition nor a verbal redundancy effect in favor of using only a single modality rather than both. Taken together with earlier research, our findings suggest that the modality effect is difficult to apply reliably and computing educators should not rush to integrate audio into visualizations in expectation of the effect. We discuss theoretical viewpoints that future research should attend to;these include alternative part-explanations of the modality effect and attention-based models of working memory, among others.

We present the algorithm visualization capabilities of the METAL project. Using METAL's graph data which represents highway systems, a selection of interactive algorithm visualizations are performed. Progress of the algorithm is shown by changing the colors of the graph's vertices and/or edges overlaid on Google Maps and in color-coded tabular form, including contents of important data structures. Advantages include the real-world data set and the variety of data sizes available, enhancing student engagement. While many visualizations and visualization tools exist for graph and related algorithms, most focus on small, synthetic graphs. We describe our algorithm visualization capabilities, which include implementations of sequential search, graph traversals, Dijkstra's algorithm, and convex hulls. These can be executed on graphs ranging in size from a few vertices and edges to hundreds. We also present results of a survey of students who have used METAL's algorithm visualizations.

Although many algorithm visualization (AV) tools are available online, most of them are not effective in helping students to learn algorithm and data structures. The reasons for this may be the poor design consideration of the tools to fulfill the learners' needs in terms of pedagogy, usability, and accessibility. This paper reports a work-in-progress research project at Athabasca University on developing an effective algorithm visualization tool for online learning. We analyze the pedagogy, usability, and accessibility goals and their respective features for the online learners and examines how the visualization and user interaction principals can help to achieve these goals in the design process of an effective AV tool. We present a review of the related literature to highlight current and past researches and illustrate the need for better user experience design in AV tools. We then identify the online learners' needs and the context of their activities to design a usable, useful, effective, and pleasurable interactive AV tool. Such a tool can fulfill the pedagogy, usability, and accessibility goals for the online learners.

The abstract nature of algorithms and data structures poses challenges for students, and the integration of visualization into comprehensive learning systems remains underexplored. This article presents VisualCodeMOOC, incorporating VisualCodeChat, a conversational agent that enhances algorithm and data structure learning through dynamic visualizations and personalized feedback. The platform effectively addresses these challenges, improving student engagement and comprehension. With instructions structuring, novel response- based algorithm visualization, exercise design, VisualCodeMOOC provides a cohesive and supportive learning environment that promotes active learning. Evaluation results demonstrate its usability, responsiveness, and educational value, confirming its potential as a promising tool for advancing computer science education.

In recent years, artificial intelligence has become an important discipline in the field of computer science. Students, in the absence of basic prior knowledge, may have difficulty tracking materials when they first encounter complex and abstract artificial intelligence algorithms. Numerous researchers and educators point out that the use of simulation systems and software tools to illustrate the dynamic behavior of the algorithm can prove to be an effective solution. The introduction and adoption of new technologies in learning and teaching has evolved rapidly. This conceptual review paper aims to explore the emergence of innovative educational technologies in the teaching and learning of artificial intelligence. The aim of this paper is to analyze the existing representative educational tools for learning topics in the field of artificial intelligence to highlight their characteristics and areas they cover, so that readers can more easily draw conclusions about the possible use of some of the analyzed systems.

Teachers who are aware of potential student misconceptions teach better than teachers who do not. In this article, we focus on misconceptions in the context of teaching and learning graph algorithms: we seek to discover student misconceptions about Dijkstra's shortest-path algorithm and related concepts. We observed and interviewed fourteen students who worked on a visual simulation task involving the algorithm;we qualitatively analyzed these data to explore the students' mistakes and their underlying reasons. We find, among other things, that students conflate concepts such as spanning tree, fringe, and priority queue and that students may neglect the greedy and dynamic-programming aspects of the algorithm;we also identify usability issues in the visualization tool we employed. These findings suggest that teachers and tool designers need to take great care to help students tease apart the key concepts in graph algorithms.

NNeduca: A software environment to teach artificial neural networks

Artificial neural networks are an integral part of the curriculum in many undergraduate computer science programs. This paper introduces NNeduca, a simulation software system designed to teach undergraduate students the fundamental concepts of artificial neural networks. The system is written in Java and aims to provide an intuitive user interface, support for research and learning activities, and the ability to expand. This tool allows students to design and train a neural network with any architecture they desire and visualize some artificial neural network theoretical concepts such as definitions, topologies, training methods, and structure. An overview of educational software systems to aid in learning the fundamental concepts of neural networks was created based on a systematic literature review. A comparison of existing simulation systems and the developed NNeduca tool was performed in this paper. The evaluation was carried out using a newly developed model for assessing the quality of selected systems using established criteria formed as a result of a thorough examination of relevant methods of evaluating educational software. The usability evaluation results show that the NNeduca tool received the highest ratings, indicating that it can significantly improve the teaching process in artificial neural network courses.

Dynamic programming is one of the most challenging algorithm design techniques for computer programmers. Students frequently struggle with dynamic programming algorithms in Data Structures and algorithms courses, and software developers often find it difficult to solve dynamic programming problems during job interviews. To address this issue, we have developed a new visualization technique to help students better understand, analyze, and design dynamic programming algorithms. Previous dynamic programming visualizations have primarily focused on illustrating the execution sequence of programs. Our visualizations are designed to help students recognize the common logical patterns shared by a diverse set of problems. Additionally, students can use these visualizations as visual aids to assist them in designing dynamic programming algorithms.

This paper presents an innovative approach to algorithm visualization in the domain of education for individuals with hearing and speech impairments. Recognizing the limited accessibility to algorithm visualization tools for the deaf and dumb community, our project aims to bridge this gap by developing an inclusive and interactive algorithm visualizer. Current educational resources lack practical tools to facilitate the understanding of complex algorithms for this specific user group. The significance of our work lies in its potential to empower deaf and dumb learners with valuable educational resources, enhancing their comprehension of algorithms and computer science concepts. Our work leverages *** and *** tech stacks to create a user-friendly and accessible web application. By utilizing these cutting-edge technologies, we ensure a dynamic, interactive, and responsive user interface tailored to the specific needs of our target audience. Our project stands out by using interactive animations and sidenotes to engage and educate our end users and the target group, setting it apart from existing solutions. This paper portrays the positive feedback received and the tangible enhancements in algorithm comprehension, serving as compelling evidence of the effectiveness of our approach, and affirming its success. In a nutshell, our work contributes to a more equitable educational environment and offers a promising course of action for further research and development in this field. © 2024 IEEE.
