Knowledge of undergraduate students' misconceptions of data structures and algorithms (DSA) helps creating more effective learning *** algorithm misconceptions have been studied rarely. As an online learning aid for DSA, visual algorithm simulation (VAS) exercises require the students to trace the steps of an algorithm by manipulating a data structure visualization. We utilize a corpus of 712 algorithm simulation traces from 289 non-CS major undergraduate students to find evidence for misconceptions in Dijkstra's *** model students' systematic errors in traces as algorithms to classify traces as misconceptions. The models explain together 16% of 451 incorrect traces, providing evidence of four previously identified misconceptions. Students appear to conflate the concepts of spanning tree and fringe, solve shortest paths heuristically instead of Dijkstra's algorithm, apply Dijkstra's algorithm to all graph components, and apply alphabetical order in the neighbor iteration of Dijkstra's *** findings show how VAS exercise design and learning analytics can support diagnosing students' misconceptions of algorithms. In the future, this knowledge of misconceptions can be leveraged to create more effective exercises, including automated targeted feedback for VAS exercises based on validated misconceptions.

In Learning computer architecture and low-level programming is a complex challenge for beginners. We introduce Roro8, an 8-bit fantasy computer system designed to simplify the learning process while closely mirroring real-world computer systems. Roro8 comprises an 8-bit microprocessor (RX8), memory-mapped I/O, external peripherals, and an external display (RD6448). This unique feature enables students to become familiar with datasheets of devices, a fundamental aspect of hardware *** core pedagogical goal is to have students implement an emulator, simulators, assemblers, and compilers, providing a hands-on learning experience. They can create games or see their own programs running on the display, making abstract concepts tangible and engaging. Our work addresses the challenge of teaching computer architecture by offering a novel solution. Unlike conventional system-on-chip designs, Roro8 simplifies the learning process while emphasizing practical engagement. This paper outlines the problem, reviews related work, introduces Roro8, and underscores the significance of our approach in enhancing computer science education.

Visual algorithm simulation (VAS) is a method used in teaching data structures and algorithms. In a VAS exercise a learner simulates the steps of an algorithm by interacting with data structure visualisations and receives feedback on the correctness of steps taken. A data format for storing VAS simulation traces would allow for later inspection of the process by instructors and researchers. In this study we describe the development of a prototype language for this purpose. The initial version was tested in a research project where the language was used for recording traces, which were later analyzed. The results were positive but also instructed some revisions in the data format and the requirements. We describe an iterative development process for extending and improving the language and the tooling. This is a work in progress: we will proceed with the data format specification, as well as further develop the technologies needed to use the data format in conjunction with VAS exercises.

Simplifying programming for novices and students is a goal for many computer science instructors over the world and an essential concern for computer science education in general. In this paper we introduce CodeVisions, a static code analyzer and interpreter that provides testing and assessment mechanisms and generates a detailed trace of code execution. It's intended to be used to facilitate creating programming tutoring or coding assessing applications (Such as visualizers and auto-graders) through a variety of supported programming languages and flexibility of restricting code inputs. CodeVisions has a testing mechanism that allows users to write their own tests to validate the dump to their rules instead of manually parse the dump themselves resulting a test report *** and CSE researchers who are interested in creating educational applications like visualizers and auto-graders may find such applications complicated in terms of implementation. These projects require implementing compilers, interpreters, and virtual machines for processing the code snippets that can be student answer or a task which makes further development a big burden to the developer.

The determination of the factors influencing the effectiveness of algorithm visualization poses an interesting research question. In this paper, we present the results of a longitude empirical study regarding this question. The study was based on an evaluation of the Visual LinProg educational tool inside classrooms. Visual LinProg is a web-based educational tool, which solves linear programming problems using animation and visualization techniques. Visual LinProg was developed to be used in linear programming courses to supplement the teaching. Our empirical study is based on questionnaires that include quantitative and qualitative topics. This evaluation first indicates that Visual LinProg facilitates the learning of the revised simplex algorithm and second presents more results on factors influencing the understanding of this algorithm by the students/users of the Visual LinProg. Computational Geometry is a field of study whose full comprehension by students requires a combination of mathematical, algorithmic and application-oriented approaches. Due to the inherently visual nature of geometrical problems as well as to the complexity of related algorithms in terms of data structures and concepts employed, algorithm visualization can provide significant added value to the learning process, by helping shorten the cognitive distance gap between concept and visualization. In this paper, we describe CGVis, a visualization-based interactive educational platform for Computational Geometry algorithms. The paper explains the major design decisions adopted and describes the platform's main features and functionality in detail. The platform has been evaluated in real-world settings by capturing postgraduate students' response and feedback regarding usefulness, usability and user experience, as well as by measuring the platform's educational effectiveness.

The term icseBook (pronounced ice book) was coined for Interactive Computer Science Electronic Books. IcseBooks use interactives to engage students. Interactives use animation and visualization to make difficult concepts easy to understand. Interactives enable students to interact with the book to receive hints, tips, and feedback instantaneously. We have created more than 1500 interactives for each of the interactive ebooks on Java, C++, and Python and have received positive reviews. The interactives can be classified into fourteen types. This paper introduces all fourteen types of interactives, discusses their innovative features and pedagogical merits, and compares them with similar interactives used in the icseBooks on the market.

Visual algorithm Simulation (VAS) exercises are commonly used in Computer Science education to help learners understand the logic behind the abstractions used in programming. These exercises also present problems common in the daily work of Computer Science graduates. Aalto University uses the JSAV library to create VAS exercises and evaluate the solutions submitted by students. The evaluation process counts the amount of correct steps given by the user during the exercise. However, because more detailed data is not collected, teachers currently can not recreate and analyse the submitted solutions more in depth. This thesis presents the design, development and evaluation of an application prototype, which can be easily integrated in existing VAS exercises created with the JSAV library. The prototype is called Player Application, and it is designed as a service that can be easily integrated into other systems while still remaining independent. The Player Application consists of two main independent components: the Exercise Recorder and the Exercise Player. A third important contribution is the new JSON-based algorithm Animation Language, which is designed to describe, structure and store the data collected from the VAS exercises. The prototype was successfully tested in an online environment by importing the Exercise Recorder into existing exercises and replaying the submitted solutions in the Exercise Player. The tests showed that its design and architecture were valid. Next, the aim is to create a mature application, which can be used at Aalto University and other institutions, in addition the prototype still needs further development to support more VAS exercise types.

This paper presents a framework that has been developed to support code-level tracing of the algorithm visualization capabilities of the Map-based Educational Tools for algorithm Learning (METAL) project. METAL provides graph data based on real-world highway systems and tools to visualize that data and algorithms which operate on it. Data is shown plotted on maps and in text, color-coded to indicate the progress of the algorithm. The new code-level tracing framework allows specific algorithms to be implemented as a series of small actions, most of which correspond to lines of code that can be highlighted as they are executed. This allows a student to see how specific lines of code affect the data structures and variables as the algorithm makes progress toward a solution.
