Understanding and debugging of data structures and algorithms (DSA) is one of the most common tasks in computer science. DSA tests have also become a standard threshold that software developers have to cross to "get the job". One major challenge in comprehending and debugging DSA implementations lies in establishing and maintaining mental models of the quintessentially complex and twisted networks of events that make up their dynamic runtime behavior. Despite the high level of difficulty of this crucial task, general purpose tools to help users understand or reason about DSA implementations still have very limited capabilities. In this work we present Dbux-PDG, a dynamic Program Dependency Graph extension for the Dbux omniscient debugger. It captures data and control flow, as well as data dependencies of a program's execution for visualization and user interaction. To deal with the immense complexity of non-trivial programs, it offers multiple layers of summarization, that allow the user to explore either the graph as a whole or in parts, one step at a time, as they see fit. We present our findings from applying Dbux-PDG to 94 diverse algorithms and explore its utility in several case studies. All visual results are made available in an online gallery. Computer Science instructors have been exploiting learning technology such as algorithm visualization (AV) for last few years to explain hard-to-understand algorithms to the learners through simulations and animations. In this work, we explore an active and highly engaging approach, namely, the construction of visualizations of the algorithms under study. Our approach is further augmented with automated assessment of students' inclass construction activities, which they execute as apps in their mobile devices. In this paper, we utilize case study, a step-by-step visualization of a construction exercise app, to explain how technology is leveraged to provide a richer way for learners to interact with a problem, and how instructor can acquire real-time evidence of learners' comprehension of covered lecture material. Our experimental evaluation shows the educational benefits of the proposed approach in terms of enhanced student learning, reduced drop-out rate and increased student satisfaction.

Programming is an important core subject in most Computer science programmes at university level but many students have difficulties to learn the necessary combination of knowledge and skills. Code concepts and algorithms are abstract and dynamic entities, where teachers face problems with the transfer of theoretical concepts as well as with the explanation of more practical programming techniques. Software visualization with the multimodal combination of graphical, audial and textual representations aims to facilitate learning and understanding of programming. Software visualization can further be divided into program visualization and algorithm visualization. This study presents a design theoretic multimodal approach where software visualization is introduced and evaluated as an extra communication channel between teachers and students in programming courses. Two visualization prototypes have been designed and developed for evaluation in lectures for an experimental group. Data has been gathered by handing out questionnaires to students in the experimental group and to students in a control group. Both groups had attended the same lecture setup, with identical learning content but only the experimental group had access to the multimodal program visualization and algorithm visualization prototypes. 85% in the experimental group and 62% in the control group stated that they did understand where the focus of the code executing was all through the prototype for algorithm visualization. For the other prototype, visualizing object-oriented concepts, 60% in the experimental group and 54% in the control group stated that they understood where the focus of the code executing was all through the multimodal animation. Findings indicate that programming lecturing using multimodal explanations as additional learning tools is a promising path to enhance programming education in the 21st century. In my research, I will explore the potential of adapting the literature on algorithm visualization and visual analogy to the teaching of concepts and computations in introductory data science. Using computerized tutorials informed by the extensive literature on multimedia principles already available, I will explore if a visual pseudo-code facilitates simulation and application of data algorithms, beyond the facilitation afforded by mathematical notation. The research will combine between-subject classroom interventions with distance learning and within-subject laboratory studies. The dissertation will give fine-grained evidence on which types are more effective and how it could be implemented in the community at large. I am primarily interested in discussing methodological issues relating to how to make comparisons in such a multi-dimensional design space.

The term icseBook (pronounced ice book) was coined for Interactive Computer Science Electronic Books. IcseBooks use interactives to engage students. Interactives use animation and visualization to make difficult concepts easy to understand. Interactives enable students to interact with the book to receive hints, tips, and feedback instantaneously. We have created more than 1500 interactives for each of the interactive ebooks on Java, C++, and Python and have received positive reviews. The interactives can be classified into fourteen types. This paper introduces all fourteen types of interactives, discusses their innovative features and pedagogical merits, and compares them with similar interactives used in the icseBooks on the market.

This paper describes a method and a tool that allows a teacher to interactively explain and construct basic algorithms to novice programmers by direct manipulations of variables, indexes and arrays. The method consists in gradually creating a program with the assistance of a tool that captures the teachers actions on the fly. The system offers possibilities for recording a sequence of actions and replaying them. Moreover it is able to take care of conditional statements, as well as loops and macro operations. The tool generates the corresponding program code. As a result, a complete algorithm can be designed and executed without writing a single line of code.

The poster presents Algovision (see ***), both an algorithm visualization tool and a visualization philosophy presenting algorithms as they were or could have been conceived in the mind of their discoverer. The scope of Algovision ranges from the simplest algorithms like bubble sort and BST to very advanced ones like CGM (Conjugate Gradients Method of solving systems of linear equations). Due to its philosophy, Algovision lessons are very efficient and understandable. As a demonstration, in a test after a 90 min presentation of CGM to 36 undergraduate students (2nd semester, no knowledge of numerical linear algebra), 25% of them answered all test questions correctly and two thirds were considered satisfactory. The main goal of the poster is to stimulate discussion on using tools like Algovision to include more advanced algorithms (advantageously those simpler than CGM) into the undergraduate algorithm curriculum without increasing AL core hours and taking levels (e.g., math courses) of different colleges and universities into account.

visualization tools of different languages offer its users with a needed set of features allowing them to animate how programs of such languages work. Constraint Handling Rules (CHR) is currently used as a general purpose language. This results in having complex programs with CHR. Nevertheless, CHR is still lacking on visualization tools. With Constraint Handling Rules (CHR) being a high-level rule-based language, animating CHR programs through animation tools demonstrates the power of the language. Such tools are useful for beginners to the language as well as programmers of sophisticated algorithms. This paper continues upon the efforts made to have a generic visualization platform for CHR using source-to-source transformation. It also provides a new visualization feature that enables viewing all the possible solutions of a CHR program instead of the don't care nondeterminism used in most CHR implementations.

We have developed a visual syntax for representing concepts that are contingent on temporal properties (time-dependent semantics). A within-group (N=24) experiment was conducted to identify the representations that conveyed best a given semantic. We then applied our representations to the visualization of algorithms in quantum computing and carried out a second experiment (N=16) on subjects unfamiliar with the semantic concepts that were tested. The results show that our representations are intuitive and facilitate a good level of understanding of the algorithms.

NetLuke is an interactive, Web-based, e-Learning system to visualize the dynamic behavior of algorithms and data structures. It is used as a supportive tool for under-graduate and graduate courses on these topics. It aims for clarity and vividness, simplicity, portability, and extendibility and supports user controlled dynamics. During the design of the system specific focus was laid on the deployment of NetLuke in a mobile environment. Mobile devices force the developer to put considerable effort into interface design and implementation details. Touch based interaction, common for mobile devices today, makes perfect sense for teaching applications, as it supports an intuitive "game-like" interactive approach. Moving to a web based solution opens up new architectural and technological perspectives that support our goal for the development of a modern kind of algorithm visualization platform. Our vision of a user centred, non-monolithic approach is reflected by NetLukes architectural design and its set of features, as easy extensibility and adaptibility. The flexible system design and the choice of latest Web technology support the deployment to the whole range of existing computer platforms, from PCs, tablets to Smartphones.
