In my research, I will explore the potential of adapting the literature on algorithm visualization and visual analogy to the teaching of concepts and computations in introductory data science. Using computerized tutorials informed by the extensive literature on multimedia principles already available, I will explore if a visual pseudo-code facilitates simulation and application of data algorithms, beyond the facilitation afforded by mathematical notation. The research will combine between-subject classroom interventions with distance learning and within-subject laboratory studies. The dissertation will give fine-grained evidence on which types are more effective and how it could be implemented in the community at large. I am primarily interested in discussing methodological issues relating to how to make comparisons in such a multi-dimensional design space.

Mobile devices affect the way we access interactive learning material and exercises in the internet. There are changes both in the technologies used to implement software and in the possibilities and restrictions imposed by this platform. A set of visual algorithm simulation exercises - implemented using the JSAV library allowing them to work on both mobile and desktop machines - were tested on a CS majors data structures and algorithms course. As the problem formulation was not changed from previous years, we were able to study how changes in the UI might affect student performance and if there are any differences in student attitudes and mistakes or misconceptions detected. For the set of exercises studied, the results were in line with previous findings.

PAVT: a tool to visualize and teach parsing algorithms

A parsing algorithm visualizer is a tool that visualizes the construction of a parser for a given context-free grammar and then illustrates the use of that parser to parse a given string. Parsing algorithm visualizers are used to teach the course on compiler construction which in invariably included in all undergraduate computer science curricula. This paper presents a new parsing algorithm visualizer that can visualize six parsing algorithms, viz. predictive parsing, simple LR parsing, canonical LR parsing, look-ahead LR parsing, Earley parsing and CYK parsing. The tool logically explains the process of parsing showing the calculations involved in each step. The output of the tool has been structured to maximize the learning outcomes and contains important constructs like FIRST and FOLLOW sets, item sets, parsing table, parse tree and leftmost or rightmost derivation depending on the algorithm being visualized. The tool has been used to teach the course on compiler construction at both undergraduate and graduate levels. An overall positive feedback was received from the students with 89% of them saying that the tool helped them in understanding the parsing algorithms. The tool is capable of visualizing multiple parsing algorithms and 88% students used it to compare the algorithms.

Video streaming platforms are a major source of information for computer science students, where data structures and algorithms can be illustrated by means of animation. Our Python library, AAnim, aids a content creator in making such videos without any special expertise. Given a list of data structure queries or an input graph, our library creates a high-quality video that illustrates both how the data structure evolves and how these changes occur in the algorithm's pseudocode. The data structure's layout is generated automatically, further alleviating the difficulty in creating such videos. Basic programming is a fundamental subject that contains basic materials of programming algorithms as well as the design and developing programs using programming languages. Based on observations in Vocational High School at Indonesia, discovered some problems in the learning process of basic programming subject. Students are too focus with syntax errors, operating procedures and instructions of the programming language rather than understanding and practicing the related algorithms. Furthermore, learning resources used in the class are text modules which are not interactive and don't visualize abstract concept of programming language which could help students to understand the subject better. This research aims to design and improve Visual Programming Environment as Learning Support System on basic programming subjects. With this, students could put more focus in practicing design algorithms. It would be easy to sharpen their knowledge and understanding about basic programming without having to suffer from problems mentioned before.

Dynamic programming is one of the most challenging algorithm design techniques for computer programmers. Students frequently struggle with dynamic programming algorithms in Data Structures and algorithms courses, and software developers often find it difficult to solve dynamic programming problems during job interviews. To address this issue, we have developed a new visualization technique to help students better understand, analyze, and design dynamic programming algorithms. Previous dynamic programming visualizations have primarily focused on illustrating the execution sequence of programs. Our visualizations are designed to help students recognize the common logical patterns shared by a diverse set of problems. Additionally, students can use these visualizations as visual aids to assist them in designing dynamic programming algorithms.

Learning computer algorithms through dynamic visualizations: Benefits of 'AlgoRythmics' videos

Background: This study is the first to address the topic of schematic versus realistic dynamic visualization with particular focus on the human movement effect (HME) when the content to be learned takes the form of a computer algorithm. An AlgoRythmics dance choreography illustration (HM-realistic) was compared with an abstract computer animation (schematic). Previous research in the field of dynamic visualizations found schematic illustrations to be more effective, but the examined realistic representations did not include HME. Objectives: The objective of this study was to explore the process of comprehension of computer algorithms from these two types of representations (abstract animation vs. dance choreography illustration). Methods: The experiment (pre-test, study phase, post-test) involved 84 undergraduate students and included the following conditions (2 x 2 between-participants-design): HM-realistic -> HM-realistic, schematic -> schematic, HM-realistic -> schematic, schematic -> HM-realistic. Results and Conclusions: The results reveal that: (i) the group of participants who saw the dance choreography twice outperformed those who saw the computer animation twice;(ii) dance choreography illustration is only beneficial if it is presented as the second visualization. These findings are apparently contrary to the conclusions of some relevant previous research in the field, but they are in line with recent results regarding the HME. Takeaways: Realistic dynamic visualizations can be more effective than schematic ones if they involve human movement. To benefit maximally from realistic visualization, students need to have previously viewed it or to have previously viewed the isomorphic schematic presentation of it.

NetLuke is an interactive, Web-based, e-Learning system to visualize the dynamic behavior of algorithms and data structures. It is used as a supportive tool for under-graduate and graduate courses on these topics. It aims for clarity and vividness, simplicity, portability, and extendibility and supports user controlled dynamics. During the design of the system specific focus was laid on the deployment of NetLuke in a mobile environment. Mobile devices force the developer to put considerable effort into interface design and implementation details. Touch based interaction, common for mobile devices today, makes perfect sense for teaching applications, as it supports an intuitive "game-like" interactive approach. Moving to a web based solution opens up new architectural and technological perspectives that support our goal for the development of a modern kind of algorithm visualization platform. Our vision of a user centred, non-monolithic approach is reflected by NetLukes architectural design and its set of features, as easy extensibility and adaptibility. The flexible system design and the choice of latest Web technology support the deployment to the whole range of existing computer platforms, from PCs, tablets to Smartphones.

The Simplex algorithm for solving linear programs-one of Computing in Science & Engineering's top 10 most influential algorithms of the 20th century-is an important topic in many algorithms courses. While the algorithm relies on intuitive geometric ideas, the computationally-involved mechanics of the algorithm can obfuscate a geometric understanding. In this paper, we present gilp, an easy-to-use Simplex algorithm visualization tool designed to connect the mechanical steps of the algorithm with their geometric interpretation. We provide an extensive library of example visualizations, and our tool allows instructors to quickly produce custom interactive HTML files for students to experiment with the algorithm (without requiring students to install anything!). The tool can also be used for interactive assignments in Jupyter notebooks, and has been incorporated into a forthcoming Data Science and Decision Making interactive textbook. In this paper, we first describe how the tool fits into the existing algorithm visualization literature: how it was designed to facilitate student engagement and instructor adoption, and how it substantially extends existing algorithm visualization tools for Simplex. We then describe the development and usage of the tool, and report feedback from its use in a course with roughly 100 students. Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with students finding the tool easy to use: it effectively helped them link the algebraic and geometrical views of the Simplex algorithm and understand its nuances. Finally, gilp is open-source, includes an extension to visualizing linear programming-based branch and bound, and is readily amenable to further extensions.

Data structures and algorithms are important foundation topics in computer science education. However, they are often complex and hard to understand. As a result, educational tools, such as algorithm visualization systems, are always needed to help students better learn and understand algorithms. The focus on graphics and sound instead of pedagogical aspects in the design of current algorithm visualization systems undermines effectiveness in teaching algorithms. In addition, most algorithm visualization systems lack features that encourage student engagement. This research addresses some required issues in creating algorithm visualization techniques by integrating learning theories and models in algorithm learning and by visualizing algorithms using computer games to fully engage students in the algorithm learning process. A new algorithm visualization and learning approach, namely algorithm visualization using Serious Games (AVuSG), has been introduced. It visualizes algorithms using educational or serious games to benefit from their popularity and engagement to motivate students who are learning algorithms. Moreover, it facilitates the students' assessment using the winning-losing criteria of computer games without the need for external questions. The conceptual framework of AVuSG visualizes the algorithm to be learned using three forms of representations: Text, Flowchart, and Computer Game.
