Scaling frequency and voltage in a coordinated manner is a promising way to reduce energy and power, we explore the use of dynamic frequency clocking within the datapath and datapath scheduling algorithms that can be incorporated into a datapath synthesis tool. Given a schedule, we propose a practical optimal frequency assignment algorithm based on dynamic programming. The algorithm run very fast in practice. Though the algorithm theoretically run in a pseudo polynomial time O(ncT2ex), nc is the number of control steps and Te.x is the difference between the timing constraint and the critical path delay.

Background. The system that controls the waiting list (WL) and organ allocation for liver transplantation (OLT) seeks to achieve 3 main goals: objectivity, low dropout risks and good post-OLT results. We sought to prospectively validate a priority allocation model that is believed to achieve objectivity without penalizing dropout risk and post-OLT results. Methods. We evaluated a study group of 272 patients enrolled in 2006-2007. WL candidates were divided into 2 categories: cirrhotic patients classified according to Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score (MELD list and patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) organized according to a specific score (non-MELD list). The allocation algorithm for donor-recipient match assigned an optimal graft to the first MELD candidate with a MELD score of;!:20;a suboptimal graft, to the first non-MELD patient. A respective control group of 327 patients transplanted from 2003-2006 was characterized by a unique WL with a free allocation policy. We performed an interim analysis of this prospectively controlled study. Results. Although the study group showed a lower percentage of OLT (P < .05) than the control group (37% vs 45%), it selected patients for OLT based on a higher MELD score (P < .05), thus obtaining similar dropout, post-OLT survivals, and intention-to-treat (ITT) survival probabilities as the controls. Among MELD patients, we observed a significantly reduced dropout and better ITT survival profiles than those of the control group (P = .02), whereas the similar results were delivered among non-MELD patients (P > .05). Among patients with a MELD score of :20, the prevalences of suboptimal grafts (0% vs 48%) and of early graft losses (0% vs 21%) were lower in the study than in the control group (P < .05). Conclusions. We prospectively validated a priority allocation model based on objective criteria that achieved high ITT survival rates.

The problem of reconstructing three-dimensional objects buried in layered media is addressed in this paper. A numerical approach which is based on an Estimation of Distribution algorithm(EDA) is proposed. The reconstruction is obtained from the iterative inversion method that minimizes the cost function by using EDA, where the cost function is defined as the squared magnitude of the difference between the measured fields and the calculated fields from the assumed profile of the object. Numerical result shows these methods are capable of reconstructing an arbitrary 3D inhomogeneous object buried in a multilayered medium.

Distributed three-dimensional simulation of B-mode ultrasound imaging using a first-order k-space method

Computational modeling is an important tool in ultrasound imaging research, but realistic three-dimensional (3D) simulations can exceed the capabilities of serial computers. This paper uses a 3D simulator based on a k-space method that incorporates relaxation absorption and nonreflecting boundary conditions. The simulator, which runs on computer clusters, computes the propagation of a single wavefront. In this paper, an allocation algorithm is introduced to assign each scan line to a group of nodes and use multiple groups to compute independent lines concurrently. The computational complexity required for realistic simulations is analyzed using example calculations of ultrasonic propagation and attenuation in the 30-50 MHz band. Parallel efficiency for B-mode imaging simulations is evaluated for various numbers of scan lines and cluster nodes. An aperture-projection technique is introduced to simulate imaging with a focused transducer using reduced computation grids. This technique is employed to synthesize B-mode images that show realistic 3D refraction artifacts. Parallel computing using 20 nodes to compute groups of ten scan lines concurrently reduced the execution time for each image to 18.6 h, compared to a serial execution time of 357.5 h. The results demonstrate that fully 3D imaging simulations are practical using contemporary computing technology.

This paper presents an autonomic system for composing ubiquitous applications at run-time. The applications are composed according to the user preferences collected via a physical user interface. This interface allows users to specify preferences by simple actions of touching with their mobile terminals icons in the environment, instead of explicitly selecting resources and dealing with their properties. In this paper, we present a system prototype and an example multimedia application. We also evaluate the performance of the prototype and the allocation algorithm which is used to compose applications.

Background: Large-scale statistical analyses have become hallmarks of post-genomic era biological research due to advances in high-throughput assays and the integration of large biological databases. One accompanying issue is the simultaneous estimation of p-values for a large number of hypothesis tests. In many applications, a parametric assumption in the null distribution such as normality may be unreasonable, and resampling-based p-values are the preferred procedure for establishing statistical significance. Using resampling-based procedures for multiple testing is computationally intensive and typically requires large numbers of resamples. Results: We present a new approach to more efficiently assign resamples (such as bootstrap samples or permutations) within a nonparametric multiple testing framework. We formulated a Bayesian-inspired approach to this problem, and devised an algorithm that adapts the assignment of resamples iteratively with negligible space and running time overhead. In two experimental studies, a breast cancer microarray dataset and a genome wide association study dataset for Parkinson's disease, we demonstrated that our differential allocation procedure is substantially more accurate compared to the traditional uniform resample allocation. Conclusion: Our experiments demonstrate that using a more sophisticated allocation strategy can improve our inference for hypothesis testing without a drastic increase in the amount of computation on randomized data. Moreover, we gain more improvement in efficiency when the number of tests is large. R code for our algorithm and the shortcut method are available at http:// ***/similar to lswang/pub/bmc2009/.

Key assignment algorithm plays a very important role in the large and dynamic groups for group key management This paper investigates detailed and deeply key assignment algorithms and analyses Breadth First Assignment (BFA) and Depth First Assignment(DFA). Combining the advantage and disadvantage of these two kinds of algorithms, we present a new mixed key assignment algorithm(MKA). Our results show that this approach is much better than previous key assignment algorithms for reducing the average number of packets that a user needs to receive and the variance of it.

Fairness is an important component in scheming resource allocation. It can fairly allocate the resources to all users. In this paper, we study and investigate fairness of resource allocation for downlink OFDMA in radio resource management system. The data rate is arranged among the users in order to schedule the best channel for achieving fairness of resource allocation. We use sub-carrier allocation algorithm based on maximization of the sum of logarithm user data rate. The simulation results show that the percentage of proposed fairness algorithm is 20% more efficient than the existing.

Research interest related to hybrid networks for mobile users has rapidly evolved in order to extend service to all users. In particular, DVB-SH provides an efficient way of carrying multimedia services over hybrid satellite and terrestrial networks for a big diversity of terminals. Also a variety of possible hybrid system architectures can be chosen due to the two different physical layers specified: ODFM and TDM. Although DVB-SH has been designed for broadcast transmission, we propose to use it for multicast applications, which is more competitive over satellite systems. New system techniques implemented in the hybrid scheme, such as ACM and resource allocation, make the system strongly dependent on the channel conditions. Thus the capacity optimization in a multicast scenario becomes a powerful research challenge, mainly in mobile scenarios. In this paper, we aim at optimizing the multicast transmission over the satellite link and the terrestrial link of a DVB-SH based system. The architecture proposed includes resource allocation techniques depending on the scenarios considered (mobility and transmission mode). We first investigate a Hierarchical allocation algorithm based on SC (HA-SC) for the OFDM air interface of DVB-SH, which is constrained to serve a minimum rate to all users. We later propose a Time Scheduling (TS) algorithm, more appropriate for TDM satellite-based systems, which finds the optimal number of users to be served in order to achieve the highest throughput in the multicast group. We show that with the TS algorithm, the spectral gain is 20-40% with respect to the worst case user. Moreover, the HA-SC is more suitable for the satellite since it outperforms TS in 300%.

When multiple xDSL users coexist in the same network, crosstalk can become a major performance limiting factor, e.g. in so-called near-far scenarios. By employing multiple receiver signals, i.e. by operating in a SIMO (Single Input Multiple Output) rather than the standard SISO (Single Input Single Output) mode, each user can estimate and compensate the crosstalk more efficiently, thereby increasing its performance. In this paper, an algorithm is presented for the optimal allocation of transmit power in these multi-user SIMO networks. Secondly, since transmitters are usually limited to integer bit loadings, an optimal bit allocation algorithm is presented which has the added advantage of being computationally more efficient than the power allocation algorithm. The focus is on multi-tone xDSL systems, where the use of multiple tones allows the transmit spectra to be easily shaped and where near-far scenarios frequently occur when some of the users are serviced from remote terminals. Simulation results show that in these cases an improvement of the data rate of10% is possible by using existing twisted pairs in SIMO configurations, compared to the standard SISO (Single Input Single Output) configuration.
