Optimizing utilization of kidneys from deceased donors over 60 years: Five-year outcomes after implementation of a combined clinical and histological allocation algorithm (vol 26, pg 833, 2013)

This 5year observational multicentre study conducted in the Nord Italian Transplant programme area evaluated outcomes in patients receiving kidneys from donors over 60years allocated according to a combined clinical and histological algorithm. Low-risk donors 60-69years without risk factors were allocated to single kidney transplant (LR-SKT) based on clinical criteria. Biopsy was performed in donors over 70years or 60-69years with risk factors, allocated to Single (HR-SKT) or Dual kidney transplant (HR-DKT) according to the severity of histological damage. Forty HR-DKTs, 41 HR-SKTs and 234 LR-SKTs were evaluated. Baseline differences generally reflected stratification and allocation criteria. Patient and graft (death censored) survival were 90% and 92% for HR-DKT, 85% and 89% for HR-SKT, 88% and 87% for LR-SKT. The algorithm appeared user-friendly in daily practice and was safe and efficient, as demonstrated by satisfactory outcomes in all groups at 5years. Clinical criteria performed well in low-risk donors. The excellent outcomes observed in DKTs call for fine-tuning of cut-off scores for allocation to DKT or SKT in high-risk patients.

This paper proposes a new allocation algorithm of indivisible goods. We consider the case when the total value of the whole goods is the same for every participant, which models allocation at divorce or inheritance. The worst participant's obtained value must be maximized. There are not good allocation algorithms for our rating scale. We show that this problem is NP-complete. Therefore we propose four types of approximation algorithms. Among the four algorithms, the raising standard algorithm has the best ratio that the algorithm outputs the optimal solution by a computer simulation.

The IEEE 802.15.4 standard provides appealing features to simultaneously support real-time and non real-time traffic, but it is only capable of supporting real-time communications from at most seven devices. Additionally, it cannot guarantee delay bounds lower than the superframe duration. Motivated by this problem, in this paper we propose an Explicit Guaranteed time slot Sharing and allocation scheme (EGSA) for beacon-enabled IEEE 802.15.4 networks. This scheme is capable of providing tighter delay bounds for real-time communications by splitting the Contention Free access Period (CFP) into smaller mini time slots and by means of a new guaranteed bandwidth allocation scheme for a set of devices with periodic messages. At the same the novel bandwidth allocation scheme can maximize the duration of the CFP for non real-time communications. Performance analysis results show that the EGSA scheme works efficiently and outperforms competitor schemes both in terms of guaranteed delay and bandwidth utilization.

Automotive applications increasingly rely on AUTOSAR for their design and execution. AUTOSAR applications comprise functions, called runnables, that are grouped into AUTOSAR tasks. Tasks are the unit of scheduling (UoS) of the AUTOSAR operating system as the legacy of the single-core platforms. However, on multi-core platforms using tasks as UoS considerably reduces the available parallelism due to communication dependencies, which in turn reduces the potential average and guaranteed performance obtainable with multi-cores. Furthermore, running tasks in parallel requires re-validating the functional correctness of the application, since current AUTOSAR applications are designed following a sequential execution model of tasks. In this paper, we propose a new allocation algorithm, RunPar, that considers runnables and not tasks as the lloS and assigns runnables that form tasks to different cores. RunPar improves the application performance, while keeping the sequential execution of tasks, hence not requiring any extra validation effort when migrating AUTOS AR applications from single-core to the multi-core platforms. We evaluate RunPar with a real automotive application, an Engine Management System (EMS) for which we observe an average WCET reduction on EMS' tasks of 26% and 30% in a two-core and four-core ECU.

If there is a shortage of medical devices in the hospital, medical treatment for patients will be affected and the quality of medical care will deteriorate. However, having an excess of medical devices increases the burden on healthcare workers who perform inspections and maintenance costs. It is important to have an appropriate number of medical devices in order to establish a medical care provision system that can meet the demand for medical care. Conventional studies have evaluated the number of owned medical devices based on their utility rates. Although, in many cases, the period during which medical devices are on loan is defined as the utilization period, and the actual operational status of medical device use is not taken into account. In this study, we evaluate the shortage and excess of medical devices by considering the time that medical devices are actually in operation. In addition, this algorithm is proposed to determine the number of medical devices to be allocated from hospitals that have an excess medical device to hospitals that do not have enough in a region. The results of the evaluation experiment showed that the allocation of medical devices improved the utility rate in the region.

The sharing of the wireless spectrum is a major concern of network administrators. Access points in the same network interfere with each other, degrading the aggregate performance of stations. Moreover, wireless networks usually coexist with others applications that share the same spectrum and negatively impact the packet transmission. To overcome these issues, we propose the channel allocation algorithm designed for central controllers of infra-structured IEEE 802.11 networks. Our algorithm reduces the interference in controlled access points through the dynamic choice of their operating channels and, unlike other proposals, was designed to operate in a network composed of low cost devices from different brands, and open source software. Furthermore, we also consider the interference caused by unmanaged networks, adjusting the settings of the managed access points according to the wireless environment. The proposal was implemented and evaluated in an open testbed, and the results show that our controller efficiently manages the spectrum with low cost equipment and a low complexity algorithm.

Critical Real-Time Embedded Systems (CRTES) require additional computing power to match the performance requirements of increasingly complex critical functions. Many-core processors are a key solution to reach the required performance. They allow simultaneous execution of multiple critical functions comprising a number of (parallel) applications. These applications, each implementing some functionality of the system, need to communicate among them in order to make the system work. In many-cores the impact of this communication on the timing behavior of applications depends on the allocation of applications across the chip. In this paper we propose CAP: an allocation algorithm that takes into account communication among applications and tries to reduce its impact on Worst Case Execution Time estimates of applications. We show that using CAP increases the number of applications that can be scheduled on the many-core platform thus facilitating system integration.

We propose a network assisted radio resource allocation algorithm for wireless data networks with synchronized base stations, which support variable rate transmission. The algorithm, Soft-Bar may be used in both mobile and fixed wireless systems to assign the channel, transmission mode and transmit power for each user, and may be implemented in a distributed manner. The basic idea of the algorithm is to use measurements at the base and the terminal, and limited, real-time inter-base signaling, to control the interference generated by the few dominant interferers for each user. We show that in an EDGE-like system using 1/3 reuse, compared to conventional random packet assignment, Soft-Bar ran (I) increase the system throughput by more than 50% for a given delay constraint;or (2) increase the number of users by more than 30% for a given user outage requirement, while at the same time improving the user experience. In addition, it can facilitate QoS provisioning in a straight-forward manner.
