This paper considers a two-way relaying (TWR) half-duplex network in which two users communicate each other with the help of a non-regenerative relay when the direct link between the two users is nonvanishing. For the network, we adopt three protocols each with two, three, or four phases either by using analog network coding (ANC) or amplify-and-forward. The performance of the protocols is analyzed by deriving tight bounds on the average sum rate (ASR) and the outage probability in a unified form. Both results from analysis and simulation show that the three-phase ANC for TWR is favored in the outage performance by trading the time resource with the diversity gain while the two-phase ANC is favored in the ASR performance.

In analog network coded (ANC) relay with conventional channel estimation, the feedback of the estimated channel state information (CSI) is required, and hence, the bandwidth efficiency decreases. A cyclic-shifted pilot aided channel estimation (CSPACE) is used to simultaneously estimate two equivalent channels which are required for joint transmit/receive frequency-domain equalization (FDE) and own transmitted signal removal and hence, it requires no CSI feedback. In CSPACE, the delay time-domain windowing is used to separate two equivalent channels and suppress the impact of noise. However, in single-carrier (SC) ANC multi-antenna bi-directional relay (SC-ANC-MBDR) with the joint transmit/receive FDE, the equivalent channel is a concatenation of the propagation channel and the transmit FDE, and hence, its impulse response spreads over the entire delay time-domain. Therefore, the optimal delay time-domain window varies according to changing instantaneous received signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR), and as a consequence, the channel estimation accuracy degrades if the window width for the delay time-domain windowing is not adapted to the instantaneous received SNR. In this paper, we propose an adaptive window width control (AWWC) for CSPACE. The proposed AWWC adaptively changes the window size so as to minimize the mean square error (MSE) between the channel estimate and the actual channel. It is confirmed by the computer simulation that CSPACE using our proposed AWWC can always achieve BER performance superior to when using fixed window width.

Energy efficiency (EE), which is an important performance indicator as well as spectral efficiency (SE), has drawn increasing attention for the future wireless network design due to the explosive growth of energy consumption. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between EE and SE in two-way multiple relays system with analog network coding. Considering the quality-of-service (QoS) of two transceivers and transmit power constraints of each node, a fundamental EE-SE tradeoff relationship is set up for the first time in two-way multiple relay network. Then we prove that EE is a strictly quasi-concave function, which will have a global maximum. Besides, the iterative algorithm is proposed to search the optimal bidirectional SE for the maximum EE with all condition constraints. In practical system, other factors will also change the fundamental tradeoff relationship between EE and SE, which is also analyzed in this paper. The Monte-Carlo simulation is provided to demonstrate the validity of our theoretical analysis.

A layered wireless network is considered, where information is transmitted in a multi-hop MIMO-like fashion from the source node layer through several intermediate layers of nodes before reaching the sink node layer. analog network coding is investigated as the network transmission strategy, exploiting the inherent superposition features of the wireless channel. A general myopic transmission protocol is proposed, allowing overhearing across several layers. Special cases are investigated in terms of diversity and bit error rate when using different types of linear detectors. Conditions for successful decoding of all source node messages at each sink node are derived.

We introduce node-variant graph filters, which allow the simultaneous implementation of multiple (regular) graph filters at different nodes, and study their design to implement arbitrary linear transformations between graph signals. Node-variant graph filters can be implemented distributedly, making them suitable for networked settings. We determine spectral conditions under which a specific linear transformation can be implemented perfectly and, for the cases where perfect implementation is infeasible, the design of optimal approximations for different error metrics is analyzed. We demonstrate the practical relevance of the developed framework by studying the application of node-variant graph filters for analog network coding.

Based on the theory of physical layer security (PLS), this paper demonstrates that analog network coding (ANC) has ability to improve the PLS performance of the two-way relay channel against different kinds of eavesdroppers. In this paper, we define the security and unsecurity region and derive the system security capacity with ANC and traditional transmission schemes. In particular, we consider external and internal eavesdroppers respectively. Besides, we investigate the factors influencing the ANC system PLS performance. The simulation results show that ANC can greatly improve the system PLS performance against an external eavesdropper, and ensure that an internal eavesdropper cannot decode any confidential information. Furthermore, the ANC system PLS performance can be slightly improved by increasing signal source's transmission power level and eavesdropping channel's noise level.

This paper investigates the throughput performance of a two-way energy harvesting (EH) relaying system with analog network coding (ANC) scheme. ANC scheme can improve the transmission efficiency of the two-way relay network. Energy harvest is an emerging solution for prolonging the lifetime of wireless node by availing the ambient RF signals. In particular, we focus on the energy harvesting system with the time switching-based relaying (TSR) protocol. We successfully derive the analytical expressions for both the outage probability and the achievable throughput. The analytical result matches with the practical system throughput well. Furthermore, we derive a closed-form approximation of throughput and show that it is a log-concave function of the time-switching (TS) ratio. Therefore, the system throughput optimization can be mathematically formulated as a quasi-convex optimization problem which can be solved efficiently. Simulation results show that the closed-form expression of throughput is log-concave and the gap between the approximated throughput with the practical optimal throughout is less than 10%.

This paper proposes a new optimal cooperative jamming (CJ) strategy in the analog network coding (ANC) system against both external and internal eavesdroppers. Firstly, we derive the ANC system security capacity with CJ against eavesdroppers. On this basis, we analyze the jamming power allocation between two time slots subject to a total jamming power constraint. The simulation results show that using CJ in the ANC system can make eavesdroppers decode no confidential information, and the optimal jamming power allocation factor is one, which means that the optimal CJ strategy in the ANC system is to use all constrained jamming power on sending jamming signals only in the first time slot.

Two-way amplify-and-forward (AP) relay network with both cooperative communication and analog network coding (ANC) has attracted great attention. In this paper, we formulate the fundamental issue, i.e., the optimal selection of multiple AF relays in a two-way dual-hop cooperative network, into linear fractional programming (LFP) problems. Firstly, in case of channel reciprocity, by minimizing the sum of the inverse of signal-to-noise ratios (SNR), the AF relays can be selected optimally by the LFP algorithms. Moreover, we derive a closed-form solution to this case, and prove that a node either participates relaying with full transmission power, or ceases relaying. Then, for the general (possibly channel non-reciprocity) case, by maximizing the weighted sum SNR, we show that the relay selection can be optimized by the sum-of-ratios LFP algorithms. Simulations are conducted to verify the proposed results.

Although the amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying is an effective and simple technique for cooperative communication networks, it introduces a noise enhancement problem. This problem occurs when the effects of interference and the multipath fades are amplified during the transmission from the source to the relay. AF is usually used with the multiple access broadcast (MABC) protocol which is a two phases transmission (2P) analog network coding (ANC) protocol for the half-duplex (HD) communication mode. However, MABC is not designed to utilize the direct link (DL) signal no matter how strong it is. To utilize the DL signal, a three transmission phases protocol known as time-division broadcast protocol (TDBC) was proposed at which both end nodes transmit their message at consecutive time slots and the relay nodes broadcasts a combined signal at the 3 rd time slot. To deal with the noise enhancement problem and improve the system performance, this paper proposes a zero-forcing based relay power allocation (ZF-RPA) scheme to be used with TDBC protocol, where the noise enhancement is mitigated by introducing adaptive ZF gains at the relay node that inverses the channels effects between sources and relay when the signal is constructed to be transmitted at the third phase of the TDBC. Analytical results of the ZF-RPA scheme is compared to the traditional variable-gain (VG-RPA) scheme under the same nodes power allocation. Simulation results show that the ZFRPA is superior for all channel qualities in terms of the outage probability compared to the traditional VG-RPA. The total system sum rate comparison reveals that the ZF-RPA scheme could outperform the VG-RPA scheme as long as the channel qualities of the relay-transceiver links are less than certain threshold. This paper also clarifies that it is effective to select either ZF or VG-RPA according to the channel qualities and it can be implemented with VHDL by introducing an adaptive control unit (ACU).
