This paper studies the outage performance of a two-way relay transmission, where two user terminals exchange information through a shared relay that exploits analog network coding to deal with the multi-access signals. Starting from some definitions, an exact outage probability of the conventional threenode scenario is derived over frequency-nonselective Rayleigh fading channels. To gain more insight, an approximate expression is also formulated. Following this analysis, opportunistic relaying is considered for multi-relay networks to make a good use of the available diversity degrees of the channel. Then, three significant relay selection strategies, I.e., the max-min, the maxhms and the min-scp policies, are studied and analyzed in terms of outage probability. Simulation experiments are performed and performance comparisons are conducted. The results show that the proposed policies are *** and appropriate methods to implement relay selection and can achieve significant performance gains in terms of outage probability across the whole range of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as well as the sources?target rates, which validates the studies in this paper.

network coding is a paradigm for modern communication networks by allowing intermediate nodes to mix messages received from multiple sources. Recently, space-time analog network coding (STANC) has been proposed for non-regenerative multi-way relaying, where multiple nodes are exchanging information through the multi-antenna relay without direct links. In this paper, we investigate STANC in multiple-access relay channels, where multiple nodes communicate to a common destination through a multi-antenna relay with direct links. We discuss several different possible schemes including STANC with Alamouti scheme under three time slots constraints and compare the sum rate and error rate performance.

Differential distributed space-time coding (DSTC) techniques using several transmission protocols have recently been proposed to overcome the overhead involved with the acquisition of channel state information (CSI) required for coherent processing. In this paper, a novel amplify-and-forward differential DSTC technique for two-way wireless relay networks (TWRNs) is proposed, that uses the concept of analog network coding and which does not require CSI at any node to decode the information symbols. In our transmission scheme, the relays do not waste power to transmit known information. This is achieved by combining the symbol vectors of both terminals at the relays into a single symbol vector without decoding the information symbols. Furthermore, in our scheme, the direct link between the communicating terminals can be easily incorporated to further improve the diversity gain. Simulations show a substantially improved performance in terms of bit error rate (BER) of the proposed technique as compared to the known techniques.

In underwater acoustic networks, the objective that researchers are pursuing is establishing a network with high reliability, high throughput and low energy consumption. network coding can enhance reliability and throughput of network. Moreover, the throughput of network will be significantly improved by analog network coding. Accordingly, with higher reliability and higher throughput, the energy consumption will be lower. In this paper, the linear network coding and analog network coding are combined creatively. Besides, a SNR estimation algorithm is used to choose packets instead of choosing packets randomly for decoding. Afterwards, for taking advantage of the redundant packets better, packets are refreshed via bit-by-bit comparison. At last, we present numerical experiments to evaluate the performance of this scheme.

In this paper, we propose to improve a Cooperative Automatic Repeat reQuest (C-ARQ) scheme through the optimization of the distribution of the average relay energy cost in a two sources one destination wireless system. We consider a BPSK modulated transmission over Rayleigh fading channels. We propose to use specific relay and destination treatment for different possible cases: both received packets are error free, only one received packet is detected erroneous or both received packets are detected erroneous at the destination. We derive semi-analytical bounds of the throughput and the average relay energy. We find the optimal relay energy distribution which maximizes the throughput by using dichotomy search. Numerical results confirm the accuracy of the derived closed form expressions and show the throughput improvement due to the relay energy optimization compared to the conventional cooperative ARQ scheme.

Recently, relay transmission schemes have been much studied according to increasing demands for ad-hoc wireless communication. In bi-directional relay transmission, the transmission efficiency has been decreased due to the waiting time. To tackle this problem, network coding (NC) has been proposed. The orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based relay transmission applying analog network coding (ANC) can reduce the number of timeslots per one sequence compared to that without NC and it increases the transmission capacity. However, in the bi-directional relay transmission with ANC, the relay node receives the signals of each transmitting nodes simultaneously and the signal detection must be conducted. To do that, the channel state information of each nodes is needed, and the rate-efficient and accurate channel estimation should be applied for the bidirectional relay, which is not much considered so far. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new channel estimation scheme for bidirectional two-timeslot OFDM relay transmission where the transmitters send sparse Walsh-code pilots and the receiver detects and estimates each channel information by the correlation processing. The proposed scheme can estimate the channels by less pilot symbols sparsely allocated in OFDM frame. In addition, an accurate interpolation scheme with two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (FFT) is utilized. The performances of the proposed scheme are evaluated by computer simulations.

We evaluate the throughput and stability properties of digital and analog network coding for wireless terminals exchanging broadcast traffic with the assistance of relay nodes. For stochastically varying traffic, the stable operation is compared under the different schemes of plain routing, and digital and analog network coding, at the packet and the signal levels, respectively. For each network coding scheme, the queue dynamics are specified for the terminal and relay nodes, and the maximum throughput region is optimized over all transmission schedules. We then give generalizations of the well-known back-pressure policy for each scheme, which accounts for the coupling of the queues due to network coding and is throughput optimal, i.e., it stabilizes the network whenever this is possible. Our initial analysis focuses on a network with a single relay node. We then discuss extensions of this to arbitrary terminal-relay configurations in a general multihop network. A general framework is established to construct the maximum throughput region and throughput optimal scheduling is jointly designed with network coding for relay networks with general channel rates. For any achievable rates in the maximum throughput region the dynamic scheduling and coding ensure that the average queue lengths at the terminal and relay nodes are asymptotically bounded.

The multiple access broadcast (MABC) is an effective two phases transmission (2P) ANC protocol for the half-duplex (HD) communication mode. However, MABC does not make use of channel gain of the direct link (DL) no matter how strong it is. On the other hand, the time division broadcast (TDBC) is known as a three phases transmission (3P) protocol which enables transceivers to utilize DL and thus offers the possibility to achieve higher performance compared with the MABC at the expense of a reduced spectral efficiency due to the one extra transmission phase. In this paper, we investigate a joint single relay selection (SRS) and power allocation schemes for energy-efficient wireless communication systems with analog network coding (ANC) for TDBC, where two-way relay channel with two end nodes and N parallel relay nodes is considered under an assumption of perfect channel-state information (CSI). Our objective is to minimize the total system transmit power consumption under quality-of-service (QoS) constraints for TDBC protocol with joint single relay selection and nodes power allocation. In addition, a zero-forcing based relay signal combining technique that combines the signals received at the 1st and 2nd transmission phases, also known as zero-forcing relay power allocation (ZF-RPA), is investigated. Numerical simulation shows that the traditional variable gain relay power allocation (VG-RPA) is more energy-efficient than the ZF-RPA scheme for TDBC in cases with and without utilizing DL.

analog network coding has been successfully employed in conventional two way relaying systems. However, analog two way relaying is successful when the two sender and destination nodes are symmetric. In practical cellular-based mobile communication systems of the likes of Long Term Evolution (LTE), the system is composed of several powerful base-stations and low power users' equipment. Applying classical two way relaying will cause unbearable interference. In this paper we propose applying network coding between two user equipment in the same cell in the uplink direction. We investigate Single Input Single Output (SISO) and Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) models for this scenario. We also study the effect of interference of other nodes in surrounding cells.
