Global Sensitivity analysis of Terrain Effects in Geolocation Systems

The design of geolocation systems has traditionally used linearized models or one-at-a-time sensitivity analyses, which ignore most of the design space. Global sensitivity analysis algorithms enable more complete system characterization for more complex, nondifferentiable models, such as a digital elevation model (DEM). This paper develops the necessary framework for applying global sensitivity analysis methods to geolocation systems and demonstrates the algorithm's enhanced fidelity by applying it to an example angle of arrival and DEM geolocation system. Terrain roughness is found to be a significant parameter solely through interaction effects with other parameters, effects that would have been missed by simpler analyses.

Recently T.C. Tuan and K.H. Teo provided an O(ns) time dynamic programming algorithm to minimize the total number of jogs when the separation s is given. It is shown that the left-to-right greedy approach, can be done in linear time, and seems to be intuitively able to generate a layout with minimum number of total jogs. It is also shown that the greedy approach does not always work and, in the worst case, will generate a layout with close to n more jogs than necessary.

Comparison of algorithms for the analysis of Affymetrix microarray data as evaluated by co-expression of genes in known operons

Oligonucleotide microarrays are an informative tool to elucidate gene regulatory networks. In order for gene expression levels to be comparable across microarrays, normalization procedures have to be invoked. A large number of methods have been described to correct for systematic biases in microarray experiments. The performance of these methods has been tested only to a limited extend. Here, we evaluate two different types of microarray analyses: (i) the same gene in replicate samples and (ii) different, but co-expressed genes in the same sample. The reliability of the latter analysis needs to be determined for the analysis of regulatory networks and our report is the first attempt to evaluate for the accuracy of different microarray normalization methods in this respect. Consistent with previous results we observed a large effect of the normalization method on the outcome of the expression analyses. Our analyses indicate that different normalization methods should be performed depending on whether a study is aiming to detect differential gene expression between independent samples or whether co-expressed genes should be identified. We make recommendations about the most appropriate method to use.

Oligonucleotide Microarrays have become powerful tools in Genetic Research, as they serve as parallel scanning mechanisms to detect the presence of genes using test probes composed of controlled segments of gene code built by masking techniques. The detection of each gene depends on the multichannel differential expression of perfectly matched segments against mismatched ones. This methodology, devised to robustify the detection process posses some interesting problems under the point of view of Genomic Signal Processing, as test probes express themselves in rather different patterns, not showing proportional expression levels for most of the segment pairs, as it would be expected. These cases may be influenced by unexpected hybridization dynamics, and are worth of being studied with a double objective: gain insight into hybridization dynamics in microarrays, and to improve microarray production and processing as well. Two methods are proposed in this paper: modelling the dynamics of expression dynamics and isolating gene expressions showing unexpected behaviour to proceed in their further classification and study.

Fusion of EEG and fMRI data helps researchers to provide a more comprehensive understanding of neural basis for the functional behavior in human brain. EEG and fMRI Joint analysis for cognitive tasks indicates plausible results to obtain a better spatiotemporal resolution of event related responses in the brain. Joint-ICA as a multivariate data analysis method, assumes more than two features type (modalities) have common mixing data and it tries to maximizes independency among joint components. Here, we study the performance of five ICA algorithms when applied to joint analysis of EEG/fMRI data. We use the visualization and computational tools to quantitatively analyze the performance of different ICA algorithms for EEG/fMRI fusion and discuss the results for the simulation and real data.

Memory allocations are one of the most frequently used operations in computer programs. The performance of memory allocation operations is a critical factor in software design;however, it is very often neglected. In this paper, we present a comprehensive complexity analysis of widely adopted user-level memory allocator algorithms. We consider time and space complexity, as well as the allocator overhead. The results show that the Ptmalloc family of memory allocator algorithms outperformed all other investigated allocators in terms of theoretical time complexity and space overhead. All allocators showed the same space complexity.

Technological and medical advances have led to the realisation of full body imaging, with systemic diagnostic approaches becoming increasingly more prevalent. In the imaging of atherosclerotic disease, contrast - enhanced whole-body MRA has been demonstrated to enable detection of stenosis with a high sensitivity and specificity. Characterization of the systemic cardiovascular disease burden has significant prognostic value. A whole-body acquisition does however generate a large volume of three-dimensional data and as such there are expected to be significant advantages in developing automated techniques for the analysis of these images. Improved radiological workflow, reduced analysis time and increased analytical standardization are expected to be among the benefits offered by this approach. As part of a process of automated software development this study aimed to collect and validate arterial location ground truth. The data will be used to inform the development of semi-automated vascular identity tools, and allow the potential for the further development of semi-automated anatomically informed cardiovascular disease analysis and reporting.

Fault trees constitute one of the essential formalisms for static safety analysis of various industrial systems. Dynamic fault trees (DFT) enrich the formalism by time-dependent behavior, e.g., repairs or functional dependencies. analysis of DFT is so far limited to substantially smaller models than those required for, e.g., nuclear power plants. We propose a fault tree formalism that combines both static and dynamic features, called SD fault trees. It gives the user the freedom to express each equipment failure either statically, without modeling temporal information, or dynamically, allowing repairs and other timed interdependencies. We introduce an analysis algorithm for an important subclass of SD fault trees. The algorithm (1) scales similarly to static algorithms and (2) allows for a more realistic analysis compared to static algorithms as it takes into account temporal interdependencies. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of the method by an experimental evaluation on fault trees of nuclear power plants.
