Theoretical and experimental analysis of a three-phase permanent magnet claw-pole synchronous generator

The present study deals with the theoretical and experimental analysis of a permanent magnet claw-pole synchronous generator (PMCPSG) suited for small rating, direct-driven applications, such as small-scale wind power plants. After the computation of the machine main dimensions using an analytical algorithm, a Hooke-Jeeves optimisation procedure was implemented in order to obtain the optimal geometry of the PMCPSG. The electromagnetic field and static performances are studied, based on three-dimensional finite element analysis. A prototype of the PMCPSG is tested on a test bench for resistive and inductive loads.

Unified Approach to Secret Sharing and Symmetric Private Information Retrieval With Colluding Servers in Quantum Systems

This paper unifiedly addresses two kinds of key quantum secure tasks, i.e., quantum versions of secret sharing (SS) and symmetric private information retrieval (SPIR) by using multi-target monotone span program (MMSP), which characterizes the classical linear protocols of SS and SPIR. SS has two quantum extensions;One is the classical-quantum (CQ) setting, in which the secret to be sent is classical information and the shares are quantum systems. The other is the quantum-quantum (QQ) setting, in which the secret to be sent is a quantum state and the shares are quantum systems. The relation between these quantum protocols and MMSP has not been studied sufficiently. We newly introduce the third setting, i.e., the entanglement-assisted (EA) setting, which is defined by modifying the CQ setting with allowing prior entanglement between the dealer and the end-user who recovers the secret by collecting the shares. Showing that the linear version of SS with the EA setting is directly linked to MMSP, we characterize linear quantum versions of SS with the CQ ad QQ settings via MMSP. Further, we introduce the EA setting of SPIR, which is shown to link to MMSP. In addition, we discuss the quantum version of maximum distance separable codes.

analytical methods for the assessment of hanger forces of a suspension bridge based on measured main cable configuration

The accurate measurement of the hanger tensile forces of suspension bridges is crucial for construction control and bridge maintenance. However, the commonly used vibration frequency method is not applicable to the short-hanger force assessment. The configuration of the main cable of a suspension bridge is closely related to hanger forces so that the main cable configuration can reflect the hanger forces. Based on the multi-segment catenary theory, this study proposed an analytical algorithm for the reverse assessment of hanger forces based on the measured configuration data of the main cable. First, the relationship between the hanger force and two critical parameters, that is, the horizontal force of the main cable and the catenary parameter, is established, in which the influence of the saddle arc on the main cable configuration is considered. Then, the horizontal force of the main cable is used as the breakthrough point, and a geometric condition (measuring the coordinates of a non-hanging point on the main cable) or a mechanical condition (measuring the tension of a long hanger by the vibration frequency method) is added. Using the nonlinear generalized reduced gradient method, the nonlinear equations are solved, and all hanger forces are identified. The proposed method feasibility and effectiveness are proved using a suspension bridge with a main span of 730 m as an example. The results show that the algorithm of adding a mechanical condition is lower in sensitivity, less affected by the accuracy of the additional condition, higher in precision, and easier to control, comparing to that of adding a geometric condition. Meanwhile, the horizontal force of the main cable and each hanger force exhibit a nearly perfect linear correlation.

Design of on-chip transformer with various coil widths to achieve minimal metal resistance

A layout design algorithm of a variable-width transformer is proposed to minimize metal resistance in this letter. The proposed algorithm can rapidly design metal widths in each coil of a planar transformer for a given chip area. Two on-chip transformers with identical self-inductance are fabricated to verify the proposed algorithm in 90-nm CMOS technology. Measurement results demonstrate the improvement of metal resistance approximates to the value of 11.6%. Results of this study provide an effective algorithm to design a minimal-loss transformer for radio frequency integrated circuit applications.

Noise-Weighted FBP algorithm for Uniformly Attenuated SPECT Projections

Noise-weighted FBP (filtered backprojection) algorithm and Bayesian FBP algorithm were developed recently for un-attenuated Radon transform, which have applications in x-ray CT (computed tomography). This paper extends the noise weighted FBP algorithm to the case of uniformly attenuated Radon transform, and this extended FBP algorithm can be applied in uniformly attenuated SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography). Computer simulations and experimental data demonstrate that the proposed FBP algorithm has similar noise control capability as the iterative ML-EM (maximum likelihood expectation maximization) algorithm. In practice, the attenuator is rarely uniform. A stable FBP algorithm must be developed for non-uniform attenuators before the FBP algorithm can be applied in clinics when attenuation correction is required.

The new method of determining characteristics of elements for overvoltage protection of low-voltage system

This paper presents an innovative method for an efficient characterization of relevant characteristics of nonlinear overvoltage protection elements in low-voltage applications. Standard measuring equipment was modified to enable an efficient and repeatable experimental procedure in order to investigate characteristics of overvoltage diodes and varistors, in particular volt-ampere characteristic, volt-ohm characteristic, coefficient of nonlinearity, and dissipating energy. Furthermore, the pseudoempiric method using the "area law" has been developed to determine a pulse characteristic of a gas-filled surge arresters (GFSA). An innovative aging estimate algorithm was additionally used. The justification of the suggested method on commercial nonlinear overvoltage components was checked. Its protective characteristics were examined by both the classical approach and the new suggested method. The obtained results from both methods showed minimal discrepancies.

Topology mapping of irregular parallel applications on torus-connected supercomputers

Supercomputers with ever increasing computing power are being built for scientific applications. As the system size scales up, so does the size of interconnect network. As a result, communication in supercomputers becomes increasingly expensive due to the long distance between nodes and network contention. Topology mapping, which maps parallel application processes onto compute nodes by considering network topology and application communication pattern, is an essential technique for communication optimization. In this paper, we study the topology mapping problem for torus-connected supercomputers, and present an analytical topology mapping algorithm for parallel applications with irregular communication patterns. We consider our problem as a discrete optimization problem in the geometric domain of a torus topology, and design an analytical mapping algorithm, which uses numerical solvers to compute the mapping. Experimental results show that our algorithm provides high-quality mappings on 3-dimensional torus, which significantly reduce the communication time by up to 72%.

Determining attribute weights for multiple attribute decision analysis with discriminating power in belief distributions

Attribute weight assignment plays an important role in multiple attribute decision analysis (MADA). When the performances of alternatives on each attribute are expressed by distributions instead of single values, how to use the differences among the performances to obtain attribute weights is an interesting but difficult issue. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a method for obtaining attribute weights from discriminating power in belief distributions. With the consideration of the differences among the utilities of all assessment grades used to profile belief distributions, the dissimilarity based discriminating power, the standard deviation based discriminating power and the Gini's mean difference based discriminating power of the performances of all alternatives on each attribute are constructed to determine three sets of respective weights of attributes. They are convexly combined using three coefficients to generate integrated weights of attributes. To relieve the burden on a decision maker to provide precise values for the three coefficients, they are allowed to change between 0 and 1, as long as their sum is equal to 1. Under such constraints on the three coefficients, an optimization model is constructed to determine the minimum and maximum expected utilities of each alternative. From the expected utilities, all alternatives are then compared using Hurwicz rule with the provided optimism degree interval to generate solutions to MADA problems. The transitivity of the comparison outcomes among three alternatives under a given optimism degree interval is theoretically analyzed to guarantee the rationality of the outcomes. A focal form selection problem is investigated to demonstrate the applicability and validity of the proposed method. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Temperature load response of self-anchored suspension bridges: An analytical method and its FEM verification

A suspension bridge, as a flexible suspension system with cables serving as the primary load-bearing structures, features longer spans and higher sensitivity to temperature loads than other bridge types. While the main cables of the self-anchored suspension bridge (SASB) are anchored at the main beam ends, the beam's thermal contraction and expansion greatly impact the shape of the main cables. Focusing on a three-span SASB, this study proposed an analytical algorithm for estimating the internal forces and deformation responses of the whole bridge under a temperature load. With bridge parameters known in the completed bridge state, the relationships between the deformation and position of the main cables, hangers, main beams, and towers are successively derived and analyzed. Using a set of basic unknown parameters representing the internal forces and deformations of the bridge, constraint equations are formulated based on the following conditions: conservation of unstrained lengths of main cables, conservation of unstrained lengths of hangers, conservation of unstrained lengths of main beam, closure of span length and elevation differences in each span, static balance of the main beams, closure of vertical deflection of acting points in the main beam, and elevation closure of intersection points between the bridge and the towers. The number of constraint equations is equal to that of basic unknown parameters. The system of nonlinear equations thus established is solved via the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. Finally, the full-bridge response of an exemplary SASB with a span layout of 199 m + 499 m+ 199 m under different temperature loads is calculated. The results of the proposed analytical algorithm and the finite element method are compared, revealing their high agreement and proving the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. The latter allows one to consider the temperature load effect at the SASB design stage and clarify its mechanism.

Scattering analysis of arbitrarily shaped cylinders in a focused beam system-oblique incidence case

The scattering from an arbitrarily shaped cylinder for the general oblique incident case is characterised by its induced field ratio (IFR) and its co-polarised and cross-polarised scattering patterns, The paper describes how a unique focused-beam measurement system is used to determine experimentally the scattering characteristics of an arbitrarily shaped cylinder for an obliquely incident plane wave. The fields of the transmitting and receiving antennas of the focused-beam measurement system are approximated by equivalent fundamental Gaussian beams. An analytical algorithm, based on computation of the coupling between the transmit and receive Gaussian beams of the focused-beam measurement system and the scattered field of the cylinder, is used to determine the IFR and the co-polarised and cross-polarised scattering patterns of the cylinder. The experimental results obtained by this method for typical dielectric and metal cylinders agree well with the theoretical scattering characteristics computed numerically by the method of moments (MOM) and the finite element method (FEM).
