Currently, android smartphones have dominated the distribution of mobile devices around the world. Then, with high demands for android programming jobs, large numbers of schools, universities, and professional training institutions offer related courses. The android programming Learning Assistance System (APLAS) has been developed to accommodate independent and automatic assisting learning for students to learn android programming by adopting test-driven development (TDD) method. APLAS offers learning materials to systematically study android programming through solving topics with four stages and provides features for automatic validation of the student's answers by running given test codes. However, a platform to support various activities of teachers for handling a lot of students in the courses is not implemented yet, and it made their load become very high. This paper presents the proposal of online platform in APLAS for distributing the learning materials, collecting the student's answers, and validating them, based on a web application system. By using Gradle, a validator program was developed for running the test codes automatically in the server when a new answer is submitted. A comprehensive evaluation has been applied by asking 60 undergraduate students in an Indonesian university to use the online platform, solve three APLAS learning topics, and submit the answers. The results showed that the three functions worked properly, and the validation process of 183 submissions from all students delivered correct results on the server. The stability, robustness, effectiveness, performance, and security of the online platform were confirmed by analyzing the data of users' activities and validation results. The significant reduction in processing time on all three functions also confirmed its effectiveness and improvement. Finally, the students' feedback proved its usability.

Effective learning method is essential for the attainment of the learning objectives. In pandemic situation when courses are conducted online, creativity and innovation in designing learning methods become more imperative. Learning android programming via online course is much harder for students and teachers. Without a real face-to-face meeting, their interactions become limited and this condition produces several prominent issues. This paper presents the implementation of android programming Learning Assistance System (APLAS) as a self-learning tool to address the issues in online android programming course. APLAS is blended into the course that used two tools, Learning Management System (LMS) and online meeting tool. Findings reveal that the blending of APLAS into an online course of android programming is effective to improve students' achievement and makes it easier for them to learn android programming. Students also show high enthusiasm and attractiveness to the course. Preference for being collectivist learners was also evident.

android programming learning assistance system (APLAS) has been proposed and implemented as a self-learning platform of android programming to help learners. To cover wide topics, APLAS offers various assignments with rich materials through four stages. Guide documents take important roles to help novice students completing the assignments by giving the details of the parameters and commands required in the source codes. However, students will have to write codes without them for practical programming. In this paper, we investigate learning outcomes of APLAS by asking 54 third-year undergraduate students in Makassar State University, Indonesia, to solve the rectangular prism assignment in the Interactive Application stage without giving guide documents. These students had previously solved other assignments using guide documents. The results show that only one student failed the assignment, which confirms the effectiveness of APLAS learning in this assignment.

Mobile platforms have become extremely popular among users and hence become an important platform for developers. Mobile devices often store tremendous amount of personal, financial and commercial data. Several studies have shown that large number of the mobile applications that use cryptography APIs have made mistakes. This could potentially attract both targeted and mass-scale attacks, which will cause great loss to the mobile users. Therefore, it is vitally important to provide education in secure mobile programming to students in computer science and other related disciplines. It is very hard to find pedagogical resources on this topic that many educators urgently need. This paper introduces a course module that teaches students how to develop secure android applications by correctly using android's cryptography APIs. This course module is targeted to two areas where programmers commonly make many mistakes: password based encryption and SSL certificate validation. The core of the module includes a real world sample android program for students to secure by implementing cryptographic components correctly. The course module will use open-ended problem solving to let students freely explore the multiple options in securing the application. The course module includes a lecture slide on android's Crypto library, its common misuses, and suggested good practices. Assessment materials will also be included in the course module. This course module could be used in mobile programming class or network security class. It could also be taught as a module in advanced programming class or used as a self-teaching tool for general public.

API recommendation for event-driven android application development

Context: Software development is increasingly dependent on existing libraries. Developers need help to find suitable library APIs. Although many studies have been proposed to recommend relevant functional APIs that can be invoked for implementing a functionality, few studies have paid attention to an orthogonal need associated with event-driven programming frameworks, such as the android framework. In addition to invoking functional APIs, android developers need to know where to place functional code according to various events that may be triggered within the framework. Objective: This paper aims to develop an API recommendation engine for android application development that can recommend both (1) functional APIs for implementing a functionality and (2) the event callback APIs that are to be overridden to contain the functional code. Method: We carry out an empirical study on actual android programming questions from StackOverflow to confirm the need of recommending callbacks. Then we build android-specific API databases to contain the correlations among various functionalities and APIs, based on customized parsing of code snippets and natural language processing of texts in android tutorials and SDK documents, and then textual and code similarity metrics are adapted for recommending relevant APIs. Results: We have evaluated our prototype recommendation engine, named LibraryGuru, with about 1500 questions on android programming from StackOverflow, and demonstrated that our top-5 results on recommending callbacks and functional APIs can on estimate achieve up to 43.5% and 50.9% respectively in precision, 24.6% and 32.5% respectively in mean average precision (MAP) scores, and 51.1% and 44.0% respectively in recall. Conclusion: We conclude that it is important and possible to recommend both functional APIs and callbacks for android application development, and future work is needed to take more data sources into consideration to make more relevant recommendations fo

Recommending API Function Calls and Code Snippets to Support Software Development

Software development activity has reached a high degree of complexity, guided by the heterogeneity of the components, data sources, and tasks. The proliferation of open-source software (OSS) repositories has stressed the need to reuse available software artifacts efficiently. To this aim, it is necessary to explore approaches to mine data from software repositories and leverage it to produce helpful recommendations. We designed and implemented FOCUS as a novel approach to provide developers with API calls and source code while they are programming. The system works on the basis of a context-aware collaborative filtering technique to extract API usages from OSS projects. In this work, we show the suitability of FOCUS for android programming by evaluating it on a dataset of 2,600 mobile apps. The empirical evaluation results show that our approach outperforms two state-of-the-art API recommenders, UP-Miner and PAM, in terms of prediction accuracy. We also point out that there is no significant relationship between the categories for apps defined in Google Play and their API usages. Finally, we show that participants of a user study positively perceive the API and source code recommended by FOCUS as relevant to the current development context.

VID2XML: Automatic Extraction of a Complete XML Data From Mobile programming Screencasts

Developers often refer to video-hosting online platforms to find screencasts that provide a step-by-step guide to help them solve a programming task at hand or learn a new concept. More specifically, developers search for resources that help them design and implement effective mobile graphical user interfaces (GUI) using XML. Although mobile programming screencasts contain a vast amount of XML data at developers' disposal, they cannot be easily found and copied-pasted due to the image nature of videos. Given that the most common task developers perform online is copy-pasting, mobile programming screencasts must support that and be complemented with XML data in a textual format. To overcome this challenge and aid developers, this paper presents vid2XML, which is a three-phase approach that leverages both visual and textual information of video frames to locate XML region in video frames, locate the currently opened file, and extract XML data for each file presented in video frames. We evaluated each phase of vid2XML in a comprehensive empirical evaluation on videos collected from YouTube. The results reveal that vid2XML is able to accurately (i) locate XML regions, outperforming four previous work, (ii) locate the bounding box of the selected file, and (iii) extract, fix, and merge XML data for each file opened/created in a video.

In this paper, a miniature portable heart rate detector system is implemented by modern hardware ICs and simple sensor circuit with software executable on android platform. The biosignal is first extracted via photoplethysmography (PPG) principle into electric signal. Then a microprocessor is used to covert biosignal from analog to digital format, suitably for feeding into an RF module (nRF24L01 for RF transmission). On the receiver end, the computer and/or smart phone can analyse the data and display the heart rate status for health care monitoring. The housing for portable devices and PCB is tailored made by using the new 3-D printer with ergonomic design. Initial prototype size is 40 x 30 x 20 mm(3) and could be smaller in later version. Some application software running on Window application and android phone have been developed to display result for users. In the future, pure Bluetooth technology will be used for wireless personal communications instead of RF modules. At the same time, the data can be sent to computer console using existing available networks (3G, 4G, WiFi, etc.) for health database logging purpose.
