We implemented a gaze algorithm for interacting with multiple observers as a precursor to a multi-party conversation system. By acknowledging multiple participants in a natural manner, we seek to set the stage for smoother and more effective human-robot conversations featuring proper turn-taking using attention shifts. The android robot EveR-4, developed at the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology for human-robot interaction (HRI) applications was used. The robot wore a dress and was made up to replicate interacting naturally with a real woman as much as possible. Using a RGB-D camera, peoples faces and positions were tracked so that the robot's attention could be given to everyone appropriately. An importance value was assigned to each detected face based on the length of time it was detected and its distance to the robot. Facial expressions were made by the robot when people were seen to increase observers' sense of interaction. We observed peoples reactions to our implementation at an exhibition and made note of how we can improve the overall system to be more life-like and realistic.

Personality impressions of robots have been regarded as one of the crucial factors in human-robot interaction. To design the personality impressions, we should know how the visual, auditory, and tactile impressions determine the personality impressions. In this study, we investigated the relationships between touch sensations and personality impressions with a child-type android robot in two conditions where 40 Japanese participants touched a part of the robot with different appearance of the face. Factor and path analyses were conducted on the evaluation scores of the sensations and impressions provided by the participants. As a result, two significant positive causal relationships (p < 0.001) were found between the Preference and Resilience touch sensations, and the Likability and Capability personality impressions, respectively, in both robot conditions. On the other hand, several other causal relationships were found only in one condition. This suggests that there are appearance-dependent and appearance-independent relationships between touch sensations and personality impressions.

Communication robots are hard to interact with humans autonomously in everyday environment due to lack of intelligence even though robots can perform certainly only in limited environments and limited situations. However, since intelligence of robots is handled by an operator, tele-operated robots are useful to investigate functions required for robots and effects of robots in real-environment. This paper proposes an educational system with a tele-operated android robot that has human-like appearance. The developed android robot, named SAYA, is able to express human-like facial expressions and performs some communicative functions with its head and eye movements, and it is utilized as a roll of a teacher in the proposed educational system. In addition, SAYA's utterances and behaviors are controlled remotely by an operator so that it is able to not only conduct the class but also interact with students. A field trial was carried out at an elementary school, and SAYA conducted the class concerning the principle of leverage as a topic of science classes while interacting with students. Also, how it affected students' interest and motivation was investigated. As results, the trial verified that some students became interested in science class more than before the trial, and its positive effects in educational field, especially elementary schools, were verified.

This paper presents a touch sensor system of an android robot developed by authors. In our android, touch sensors are embedded under artificial skin which is composed of special silicone. Also the thickness of the skin is about 5 to 20 mm in the face and hands. In general, as the skin is thicker, the recognition rate of conventional resistive touch sensor is worse. In addition, irregular artificial skin surface does not guarantee the recognition of various touching movements. To improve the recognition rate of touch sensor, we developed capacitive touch sensors with touch controller module. In order to verify the effectiveness of our touch sensor system, we test it in various conditions of thickness and touching movements. Also we show some applications of interactive communication using our touch sensor system between human and android robot.

In this paper, we propose remote control and conversation system between human and android via internet. android is a robot resembles human being not only its appearance but also behaviors. The android EveR-3 which was developed by authors can express facial expressions and lip synchronizations. Also it can talk with a human, because it has voice recognition/synthesis engine and conversation database. To control the android in remote place, we develop an online chatting program with webcam and connect it to the program of the android. At this time, the android's side becomes a server and user side is a client. Then, user can order the operation commands to the android using this system or talk with it by voice and text messages. In this paper, we will show some examples to verify the effectiveness of our system.

This chapter describes an educational system with a tele-operated android robot, named SAYA, that can express human-like facial expressions and perform some communicative functions with its head and eye movements, and it is utilized as a role of a teacher. Two kinds of field experiments were conducted to investigate effectiveness of this educational system in actual educational fields. An experiment was conducted at both an elementary school and a university to estimate age-dependent differences of its effectiveness. The other experiment was carried out to verify whether children's interest, motivation, and concentration to the class, and science and technologies were enhanced.

Using their face as their prior affective interface, android robots and other agents embody emotional facial expressions, and convey messages on their identity, gender, age, race, and attractiveness. We are examining whether androids can convey emotionally relevant information via their static facial signals, just as humans do. Based on the fact that social information can be accurately identified from still images of nonexpressive unknown faces, a judgment paradigm was employed to discover, and compare the style of facial expressions of the Geminoid-DK android (modeled after an actual human) and its' Original (the actual human). The emotional judgments were achieved through an online survey with video-stimuli and questionnaires, following a forced-choice design. Analysis of the results indicated that the emotional judgments for the Geminoid-DK highly depend on the emotional judgments initially made for the Original, suggesting that androids inherit the same style of facial expression as their originals. Our findings support the case of designing android faces after specific actual persons who portray facial features that are familiar to the users, and also relevant to the notion of the robotic task, in order to increase the chance of sustaining a more emotional interaction.

This paper presents a brain computer interface (BCI) system developed for the tele-operation of a very humanlike android. Employing this system, we review two studies that give insights into the cognitive mechanism of agency and body ownership during BCI control, as well as feedback designs for optimization of user's BCI skills. In the first experiment operators experienced an illusion of embodiment (in terms of body ownership and agency) for the robot's body only by imagining a movement (motor imagery) and watching the robot perform it. Also using the same setup, we could further discover that during BCI-operation of the android, biasing the timing and accuracy of the performance feedback could improve operators' modulation of brain activities for the motor imagery task. Our experiments showed that the motor imagery skills acquired through this technique were not limited to the android robot, and had long-lasting effects for other BCI usage as well. Therefore, by focusing on the human side of BCIs and demonstrating a relationship between the body ownership sensation and motor imagery learning, our BCI-teleoperation system offers a new and efficient platform for general BCI application.

android robots that have a human-like appearance have been developed recently. We have been also developing an android-type communication robot SAYA equipped with the face robot that can express facial expressions. This paper shows an application of the android robot SAYA in educational fields as medium of a remote class support system. In this system, SAYA plays a role of a teacher, and the principle of leverage is adopted as a topic of science class for elementary school students. Moreover, we conducted the field trial at elementary schools to verify the effectiveness of the system. As a result, we confirmed its positive effects and possibility in elementary schools.

This paper introduces a psychiatric patient robot that can be used for medical interview training in psychiatric education. The patient robot is developed based on an android robot technology. Medical interview training in psychiatric field is generally conducted by employing human simulated or standardized patient (SP) who is trained to reproduce a set of symptoms of intended mental disorder by veteran psychiatrists. But in the use of a healthy person as a SP there are some problems such as mental burden, time-consuming, the lack of human resources, and so forth. In contrast, the merit of the use of a patient robot is to offer standardized and reproducible interview training to psychiatric trainees. Furthermore, it is expected that psychiatric trainees are able to experience realistic medical interview as if they face to a real human SP by taking advantage of characteristics of android robots. As the first step, the patient robot was particularly designed to simulate a set of symptoms of unipolar depression, because it is a common mental disorder worldwide. The interview scenario, that is question and answer process between an interviewer and the patient robot, was prepared based on the "Structured Interview Guide for the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (SIGH-D)" which is widely used for interview training and clinical studies. The medical interview training with patient robot was introduced in actual psychiatric education, and eight students participated and evaluated its educational effect.
