android robots that have a human-like appearance have been developed recently. The purpose of android robots is to realize natural communication between human and robot by implementing human-like behaviors. In human communication, since it is said that facial expressions contribute to face-to-face communication effectively as a nonverbal medium, we have been developing the face robot that has human-like appearance and is able to express various facial expressions like human beings. Moreover we have been developing an android type communication robot equipped with the face robot. This paper shows an application of the android robot that we developed in educational field as a remote class support system. In this system, the android robot can observe student's behavior and utterance in seatwork. Furthermore it is able to call student's name, make eye contact and encourage or warn the student with utterance and facial expressions by teleoperation. We carried out the field trial at an elementary school to verify the effectiveness of this system by comparing to the case of using only a speaker. As a result, we confirmed the positive effects and possibility of this system in educational applications. We believe that this system also can be applied to other remote communication systems like a remote diagnosis.

This paper reports the results from an experiment examining people's perception and trust when interacting with an android robot. Also, they engaged in an economic trust game with the robot. We used proxemics, the physical distance to-the robot, and questionnaires to measure the participants character and their perception of the robot. We found influences of the subject's character onto the amount sent in the trust game and distance changes over the 3 interaction tasks. The perception of the robot changed after the interaction trials towards less anthropomorph and less intelligent, but safer. This study would enable future researches to compare different robot types, personality traits and cross-cultural effects.

This paper juxtaposes science lessons on the topic "Levers" given to two sixth grade classes, one in a Tokyo elementary school assisted by an android robot SAYA, and the other at the science museum MadaTech in Haifa aided by a humanoid robothespian. The one hour lessons had the same outline including theoretical explanation, in-group experiments with lever balances, and assessment activities. The classes were instructed and managed by the robot-teachers through preprogrammed behaviors and remote operation. We juxtapose the features of the educational interaction in the lessons elicited by using the same questionnaire, assessment test and video analysis.

Our research focuses on the social aspects of teleoperated androids as new media for human relationships and explores how they can contribute and encourage people to associate with others. We introduced Telenoid, a teleoperated android with a minimalistic human design, to elementary school classrooms to see how children respond to it. We found that Telenoid encourages children to work cooperatively and facilitates communication with senior citizens with dementia. Children differentiated their roles spontaneously and cooperatively participated in group work. In another class, we applied Telenoid to remote communication between schoolchildren and assisted living residents. The children felt relaxed about continuing their conversations with the elderly and positively participated in them. The results suggest that limited functionality may facilitate cooperation among participants, and varied embodiments may promote the learning process of the association with others, even those who are unfamiliar. We propose a teleoperated android as an educational tool to promote socialization.
