The Geostationary interferometric microwave Sounder (GIMS) as a concept of microwave interferometric radiometer (MIR) proposed for China's geostationary earth orbit (GEO) atmosphere observation mission is anticipated to be the main payload of the China next generation meteorological satellite FY-4M. Now the second generation of ground demonstrator GIMS-II is under development. This paper is focused on the antenna array design of the GIMS-II and intended to solve the optimization problem of the antenna elements locations under some special limitations. Finally an optimized circular array with 70 antenna elements is achieved by using the differential evolution (DE) algorithm.

Modern radars are sensitive to the aggressive interference, especially the high-power mainlobe interference. By introducing the auxiliary antenna array, and implementing the spatial domain interference cancellation algorithm, the mainlobe interference can be suppressed, while the signal of interest is reserved. The interference cancellation performance is highly related with the auxiliary array design. In this paper, the location, the element number, and the antenna type of the auxiliary array are investigated. It is found that by adding the number of the auxiliary antenna elements, and optimizing the location of the elements, the mainlobe distortion can be successfully reduced in presence of mainlobe interference. In realistic situations, the omnidirectional auxiliary antenna element is more desired than the directional antenna element, considering the cost and coverage.

Linear antenna array optimization using flower pollination algorithm

Flower pollination algorithm (FPA) is a new nature-inspired evolutionary algorithm used to solve multi-objective optimization problems. The aim of this paper is to introduce FPA to the electromagnetics and antenna community for the optimization of linear antenna arrays. FPA is applied for the first time to linear array so as to obtain optimized antenna positions in order to achieve an array pattern with minimum side lobe level along with placement of deep nulls in desired directions. Various design examples are presented that illustrate the use of FPA for linear antenna array optimization, and subsequently the results are validated by benchmarking along with results obtained using other state-of-the-art, nature-inspired evolutionary algorithms such as particle swarm optimization, ant colony optimization and cat swarm optimization. The results suggest that in most cases, FPA outperforms the other evolutionary algorithms and at times it yields a similar performance.

A simulation-based optimization approach to design of phase excitation tapers for linear phased antenna arrays is presented. The design optimization process is accelerated by means of Surrogate-Based optimization (SBO);it uses a coarse-mesh surrogate of the array element for adjusting the array's active reflection coefficient responses and a fast surrogate of the antenna array radiation pattern. The primary optimization objective is to minimize side-lobes in the principal plane of the radiation pattern while scanning the main beam. The optimization outcome is a set of element phase excitation tapers versus the scan angle. The design objectives are evaluated at the high fidelity level of description using simulations of the discrete electromagnetic model of the entire array so that the effects of element coupling and other possible interaction within the array structure are accounted for. At the same time, the optimization process is fast due to SBO. Performance and numerical cost of the approach are demonstrated by optimizing a 16-element linear array of microstrip antennas. Experimental verification has been carried out for a manufactured prototype of the optimized array. It demonstrates good agreement between the radiation patterns obtained from simulations and from physical measurements (the latter constructed through superposition of the measured element patterns). This paper presents a novel method for constraint-based synthesis of uniformly excited non-uniformly spaced linear antenna arrays. The design problem of imposing deep nulls under the constraints of a reduced Peak Side Lobe Level (PSLL) and a fixed First Null Beamwidth (FNBW) is modeled as an optimization problem. This paper addresses the optimization problem by employing penalty function method with Ant Lion optimization (ALO) algorithm for the desired array pattern with prescribed nulls, PSLL and FNBW. The proposed constraint based optimization is realized by penalizing the undesirable solutions in proportion to error w.r.t design goals. The proposed method is illustrated with the help of design examples for placement of single as well as multiple nulls subject to the PSLL and FNBW constraints. It outperforms other state-of-the-art nature inspired algorithms in terms of accurate null positioning with a significant reduction in PSLL while maintaining a fixed FNBW. It renders a high degree of flexibility to the array synthesis process for controlling the shape of the array pattern as desired by the application at hand.

Maximizing main-lobe to the side-lobe level for the non-uniform chaos game planar antenna array using an IWO algorithm

In this study, we present the implementation of invasive weed optimization (IWO) in the maximization of main-lobe to side-lobe level for the non-uniform planar antenna array. The antenna arrays investigated in this study are generated using the chaos game algorithm (CGA) and shaped into selected fractal geometries chosen on the basis of their interesting performance. This CGA is picked out in order to overcome the limitations found in the fractal arrays. All the attained results are compared with the results produced by a well-known optimization algorithm that is the particle swarm optimization (PSO). In all the optimized arrays, IWO shows superior optimization results compared with PSO.

Ant Lion optimization algorithm to control side lobe level and null depths in linear antenna arrays

The aim of this paper is to introduce the Ant Lion optimization (ALO) algorithm to the electromagnetics and antenna community. ALO is a new nature-inspired algorithm mimicking the hunting behaviour of antlions. It is used to solve unconstrained as well as constrained optimization problems with diverse search spaces. One of the advantages of ALO is that it has very few parameters to tune, making it a flexible algorithm for solving diverse problems. In this paper, ALO has been applied for antenna current as well as antenna position optimization for pattern synthesis of linear antenna arrays. The potential of ALO to perform linear array beamsteering by optimizing the antenna phases is also illustrated. Different design examples are presented that illustrate the use of ALO for linear array optimization so as to obtain an array pattern with minimum side lobe level (SLL) along with null placement in the specified directions. Close-in SLL minimization for optimal pattern synthesis is also presented. The obtained results are validated by benchmarking with results obtained using other state-of-the-art nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), ant colony optimization (ACO), cat swarm optimization (CSO) and biogeography based optimization (BBO). The results suggest that optimization of linear antenna arrays using ALO provides considerable enhancements compared to the uniform array and the synthesis obtained from other optimization techniques. This demonstrates the potential of ALO as a strong candidate to be used for antenna array synthesis and other electromagnetic optimization problems. (C) 2016 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

antenna arrays are able to improve the directivity performance and reduce the cost of wireless communication systems. However, how to reduce the maximum sidelobe level (SLL) of the beam pattern is a key problem in antenna arrays. In this paper, three kinds of antenna arrays that are linear antenna array (LAA), circular antenna array (CAA) and random antenna array (RAA) are investigated. First, we formulate the SLL suppression optimization problems of LAA, CAA and RAA, respectively. Then, we propose a novel method called improved chicken swarm optimization (ICSO) approach to solve the formulated optimization problems. ICSO introduces four enhanced strategies including the local search factor, weighting factor and global search factor into the update method of conventional chicken swarm optimization (CSO) algorithm, respectively, for achieving better beam pattern optimization results of antenna arrays. Moreover, a variation mechanism is proposed to enhance the population diversity so that further improving the performance of the algorithm. We conduct simulations to evaluate the performance of the proposed ICSO for the maximum SLL suppressions of LAAs, CAAs and RAAs, and the results show that ICSO obtains lower maximum SLLs for different antenna array cases with different numbers of antenna elements compared to several other algorithms.

A new optimization technique based on the differential evolution algorithm is presented for the design of two-dimensional synthetic aperture microwave radiometer circle array. The object function is designed by minimizing redundant array and maximizing the distance between spatial frequency coverage samples and the optimal results of 16-32 elements circle array are obtained. Compare with simulated annealing algorithm and symmetrical distribution array, the numerical results show that the differential evolution algorithm can obtain a better solution and observably decrease computational run time. The image reconstruction and inversion algorithm of two-dimensional synthetic aperture microwave radiometer is G matrix algorithm. Compare with the symmetrical circle array, the image reconstruction of the optimal array is better.
