A STRAWMAN REFERENCE MODEL FOR AN application program interface TO AN OBJECT-ORIENTED DATABASE

This position paper provides a strawman reference model which can be used to compare and reason about an application program's interface (API) to an Object-Oriented Data Base system (OODBs), with an emphasis on object manipulation from an object-oriented programming language binding.1 We begin with an introduction of OODBs and describe the broad domain for an OODB reference model as well as the specific sub-domain we will discuss. Next, we describe some goals of the reference model for the specific sub-domain. A descriptive reference model is then described as consisting of a collection of design choices that can be used for comparing existing and future application program interfaces to OODBs. Finally, based on the descriptive reference model, we define a functional reference model that provides a much more precise description of the interface provided by one such OODB, Zeitgeist, being developed at Texas Instruments.

Le groupe North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC), Data Exchange Working Group(DEWG) Common Power System Modeling Group(CPSM)), a établi les exigencies relatives aux données d'origine, présentées à l'Annexe C. Ces exigences sont basées sur des pratiques industrielles antérieures pour l'échange des données du modèle de réseau pour une utilisation essentiellement dans les études de planification. Cependant, la liste des données requises a été allongée pour faciliter un échange de modèle incluant des paramètres communs aux applications orientées disjoncteur. Intelligent IoT Wind Emulation System Based on Real-Time Data Fetching Approach

The fundamental challenge for the development of the wind energy conversion system is the natural instability of this resource, which is now at the forefront of the debate. The Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a smart and practical approach to renewable energy system management. In addition, the Internet of Things is an important study area with several possibilities for advancement and demanding work. To improve the dependability of wind energy conversion systems, researchers may simulate all potential wind turbine operating scenarios and design power electronics topologies and control algorithms appropriately. The proposed wind emulation platform is wind-turbine-oriented, with significantly increased traceability and efficiency when compared to existing systems. The wind emulation system is driven with real-time wind velocity data. The real-time and forecasted wind data is fetched from global nodes using an IoT cloud application programming interface. The wind emulation system is modeled in the VEE Pro platform and integrated with IoT cloud API and FPGA controller. Data obtained from IoT is converted into actionable information to analyze and investigate wind turbine performance. Also, effective security measures have been taken for ESP8266 communication with the Host Computer. Adapting the proposed IoT algorithm with an associated hardware prototype, the condition of the wind energy conversion system and the power generation capability shall be analyzed in a real-time environment.

Design and implementation of a generalized laboratory data model

Background: Investigators in the biological sciences continue to exploit laboratory automation methods and have dramatically increased the rates at which they can generate data. In many environments, the methods themselves also evolve in a rapid and fluid manner. These observations point to the importance of robust information management systems in the modern laboratory. Designing and implementing such systems is non-trivial and it appears that in many cases a database project ultimately proves unserviceable. Results: We describe a general modeling framework for laboratory data and its implementation as an information management system. The model utilizes several abstraction techniques, focusing especially on the concepts of inheritance and meta-data. Traditional approaches commingle event-oriented data with regular entity data in ad hoc ways. Instead, we define distinct regular entity and event schemas, but fully integrate these via a standardized interface. The design allows straightforward definition of a "processing pipeline" as a sequence of events, obviating the need for separate workflow management systems. A layer above the event-oriented schema integrates events into a workflow by defining "processing directives", which act as automated project managers of items in the system. Directives can be added or modified in an almost trivial fashion, i.e., without the need for schema modification or re-certification of applications. Association between regular entities and events is managed via simple "many-to-many" relationships. We describe the programming interface, as well as techniques for handling input/output, process control, and state transitions. Conclusion: The implementation described here has served as the Washington University Genome Sequencing Center's primary information system for several years. Background: Advances in sequencing and genotyping technologies are leading to the widespread availability of multi-species variation data, dense genotype data and large-scale resequencing projects. The 1000 Genomes Project and similar efforts in other species are challenging the methods previously used for storage and manipulation of such data necessitating the redesign of existing genome-wide bioinformatics resources. Results: Ensembl has created a database and software library to support data storage, analysis and access to the existing and emerging variation data from large mammalian and vertebrate genomes. These tools scale to thousands of individual genome sequences and are integrated into the Ensembl infrastructure for genome annotation and visualisation. The database and software system is easily expanded to integrate both public and non-public data sources in the context of an Ensembl software installation and is already being used outside of the Ensembl project in a number of database and application environments. Conclusions: Ensembl's powerful, flexible and open source infrastructure for the management of variation, genotyping and resequencing data is freely available at http://***.

Metadata mapping and reuse in caBIG™

Background: This paper proposes that interoperability across biomedical databases can be improved by utilizing a repository of Common Data Elements (CDEs), UML model class-attributes and simple lexical algorithms to facilitate the building domain models. This is examined in the context of an existing system, the National Cancer Institute (NCI)'s cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG (TM)). The goal is to demonstrate the deployment of open source tools that can be used to effectively map models and enable the reuse of existing information objects and CDEs in the development of new models for translational research applications. This effort is intended to help developers reuse appropriate CDEs to enable interoperability of their systems when developing within the caBIG (TM) framework or other frameworks that use metadata repositories. Results: The Dice (di-grams) and Dynamic algorithms are compared and both algorithms have similar performance matching UML model class-attributes to CDE class object-property pairs. With algorithms used, the baselines for automatically finding the matches are reasonable for the data models examined. It suggests that automatic mapping of UML models and CDEs is feasible within the caBIG (TM) framework and potentially any framework that uses a metadata repository. Conclusion: This work opens up the possibility of using mapping algorithms to reduce cost and time required to map local data models to a reference data model such as those used within caBIG (TM). This effort contributes to facilitating the development of interoperable systems within caBIG (TM) as well as other metadata frameworks. Such efforts are critical to address the need to develop systems to handle enormous amounts of diverse data that can be leveraged from new biomedical methodologies.

In this study, a hybrid parallelisation approach for the simulation of non-linear electromagnetic problems by means of the message passing interface (MPI) and the OpenMP application program interface for the finite-element method (FEM) is investigated. After an introduction, the metrics applied to evaluate the speedup and the efficiency are outlined. By parallelising the institute's in-house FEM-package 'iMOOSE' either by MPI or by OpenMP, an evaluation basis for the hybrid approach is being founded. The hybrid parallelisation approach is being evaluated on the high-performance computing cluster of university's centre for computing and communication.

Towards better digital pathology workflows: programming libraries for high-speed sharpness assessment of Whole Slide Images

Background: Since microscopic slides can now be automatically digitized and integrated in the clinical workflow, quality assessment of Whole Slide Images (WSI) has become a crucial issue. We present a no-reference quality assessment method that has been thoroughly tested since 2010 and is under implementation in multiple sites, both public university-hospitals and private entities. It is part of the FlexMIm R&D project which aims to improve the global workflow of digital pathology. For these uses, we have developed two programming libraries, in Java and Python, which can be integrated in various types of WSI acquisition systems, viewers and image analysis tools. Methods: Development and testing have been carried out on a MacBook Pro i7 and on a bi-Xeon 2.7GHz server. Libraries implementing the blur assessment method have been developed in Java, Python, PHP5 and MySQL5. For web applications, JavaScript, Ajax, JSON and Sockets were also used, as well as the Google Maps API. Aperio SVS files were converted into the Google Maps format using VIPS and Openslide libraries. Results: We designed the Java library as a Service Provider interface (SPI), extendable by third parties. Analysis is computed in real-time (3 billion pixels per minute). Tests were made on 5000 single images, 200 NDPI WSI, 100 Aperio SVS WSI converted to the Google Maps format. Conclusions: applications based on our method and libraries can be used upstream, as calibration and quality control tool for the WSI acquisition systems, or as tools to reacquire tiles while the WSI is being scanned. They can also be used downstream to reacquire the complete slides that are below the quality threshold for surgical pathology analysis. WSI may also be displayed in a smarter way by sending and displaying the regions of highest quality before other regions. Such quality assessment scores could be integrated as WSI's metadata shared in clinical, research or teaching contexts, for a more efficient medical informatics

Linking information from multiple music databases is important for MIR because it provides a means to determine consistency of metadata between resources/services, which can help facilitate innovative product development and research. However, as yet, no open access tools exist that persistently link and validate metadata resources at the three main entities of music data: artist, release, and track. This paper introduces an open access resource which attempts to address the issue of linking information from multiple music databases. The General Recorded Audio Identity Linker (GRAIL - ***) is a music metadata ID-linking API that: i) connects International Standard Recording Codes (ISRCs) to music metadata IDs from services such as MusicBrainz, Spotify, and ***;ii) provides these ID linkages as a publicly available resource;iii) confirms linkage accuracy using continuous metadata crawling from music-service APIs;and iv) derives consistency values (CV) for linkages by means of a set of quantifiable criteria. To date, more than 35M tracks, 8M releases, and 900K artists from 16 services have been ingested into GRAIL. We discuss the challenges faced in past attempts to link music metadata, the methods and rationale which we adopted in order to construct GRAIL and to ensure it remains updated with validated information.
