Cryptographic algorithms that can simultaneously provide both encryption and authentication play an increasingly important role in modern security architectures and protocols (e.g. TLS v1.3). Dozens of authenticated encryption systems have been designed in the past five years, which has initiated a large body of research in cryptanalysis. The interest in authenticated encryption has further risen after the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced an initiative to standardize "lightweight" authenticated ciphers and hash functions that are suitable for resource-constrained devices. However, while there already exist some cryptanalytic results on these recent designs, little is known about their performance, especially when they are executed on small 8, 16, and 32-bit microcontrollers. In this paper, we introduce an open-source benchmarking tool suite for a fair and consistent evaluation of Authenticated Encryption with Associated Data (AEAD) algorithms written in C or assembly language for 8-bit AVR, 16-bit MSP430, and 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3 platforms. The tool suite is an extension of the FELICS benchmarking framework and provides a new AEAD-specific low-level API that allows users to collect very fine-grained and detailed results for execution time, RAM consumption, and binary code size in a highly automated fashion. FELICS-AEAD comes with two pre-defined evaluation scenarios, which were developed to resemble security-critical operations commonly carried out by real IoT applications to ensure the benchmarks are meaningful in practice. We tested the AEAD tool suite using five authenticated encryption algorithms, namely AES-GCM and the CAESAR candidates ACORN, ASCON, Ketje-Jr, and NORX, and present some preliminary results.

MetNetAPI: A flexible method to access and manipulate biological network data from MetNet

Background. Convenient programmatic access to different biological databases allows automated integration of scientific knowledge. Many databases support a function to download files or data snapshots, or a webservice that offers "live" data. However, the functionality that a database offers cannot be represented in a static data download file, and webservices may consume considerable computational resources from the host server. Results. MetNetAPI is a versatile application programming interface (API) to the MetNetDB database. It abstracts, captures and retains operations away from a biological network repository and website. A range of database functions, previously only available online, can be immediately (and independently from the website) applied to a dataset of interest. Data is available in four layers: molecular entities, localized entities (linked to a specific organelle), interactions, and pathways. Navigation between these layers is intuitive (e.g. one can request the molecular entities in a pathway, as well as request in what pathways a specific entity participates). Data retrieval can be customized: Network objects allow the construction of new and integration of existing pathways and interactions, which can be uploaded back to our server. In contrast to webservices, the computational demand on the host server is limited to processing data-related queries only. Conclusions. An API provides several advantages to a systems biology software platform. MetNetAPI illustrates an interface with a central repository of data that represents the complex interrelationships of a metabolic and regulatory network. As an alternative to data-dumps and webservices, it allows access to a current and "live" database and exposes analytical functions to application developers. The web application paradigm has become a dominant choice due to the ubiquity of web browsers across PCs and mobile devices, and the layer of abstraction that they provide. However, browsers have traditionally communicated only with servers, never from one browser to another. The WebRTC API overcomes this limitation, providing further avenues for the web application paradigm to evolve. In this paper we present Cyclon.p2p an implementation of the Cyclon peer sampling protocol using the WebRTC API. We provide a detailed overview of our system, and conduct a thorough evaluation of the implementation in real-world and simulated experiments. Our results strongly suggest that our implementation is feasible for large scale deployment in real world Web applications.

System security is becoming an indispensable part of our daily life due to the rapid proliferation of unknown malware attacks. Recent malware found to have a very complicated structure that is hard to detect by the traditional malware detection techniques such as antivirus, intrusion detection systems, and network scanners. In this paper, we propose a complex network-based malware detection technique, Malware Detection using Complex Network (MDCN), that considers application program interface Call Transition Matrix (API-CTM) to generate complex network topology and then extracts various feature set by analyzing different metrics of the complex network to distinguish malware and benign applications. The generated feature set is then sent to several machine learning classifiers, which include naive-Bayes, support vector machine, random forest, and multi-layer perceptron, to comparatively analyze the performance of MDCN-based technique. The analysis reveals that MDCN shows higher accuracy, with lower false-positive cases, when the multi-layer perceptron-based classifier is used for the detection of malware. MDCN technique can efficiently be deployed in the design of an integrated enterprise network security system.

CastorDB: A comprehensive knowledge base for Ricinus communis

Background: Ricinus communis is an industrially important non-edible oil seed crop, native to tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Although, R. communis genome was assembled in 4X draft by JCVI, and is predicted to contain 31,221 proteins, the function of most of the genes remains to be elucidated. A large amount of information of different aspects of the biology of R. communis is available, but most of the data are scattered one not easily accessible. Therefore a comprehensive resource on Castor, Castor DB, is required to facilitate research on this important plant. Findings. CastorDB is a specialized and comprehensive database for the oil seed plant R. communis, integrating information from several diverse resources. CastorDB contains information on gene and protein sequences, gene expression and gene ontology annotation of protein sequences obtained from a variety of repositories, as primary data. In addition, computational analysis was used to predict cellular localization, domains, pathways, protein-protein interactions, sumoylation sites and biochemical properties and has been included as derived data. This database has an intuitive user interface that prompts the user to explore various possible information resources available on a given gene or a protein. Conclusion: CastorDB provides a user friendly comprehensive resource on castor with particular emphasis on its genome, transcriptome, and proteome and on protein domains, pathways, protein localization, presence of sumoylation sites, expression data and protein interacting partners. © 2011 Chattoo et al;licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

Background: The World Wide Web has become a dissemination platform for scientific and non-scientific publications. However, most of the information remains locked up in discrete documents that are not always interconnected or machine-readable. The connectivity tissue provided by RDF technology has not yet been widely used to support the generation of self-describing, machine-readable documents. Results: In this paper, we present our approach to the generation of self-describing machine-readable scholarly documents. We understand the scientific document as an entry point and interface to the Web of Data. We have semantically processed the full-text, open-access subset of PubMed Central. Our RDF model and resulting dataset make extensive use of existing ontologies and semantic enrichment services. We expose our model, services, prototype, and datasets at http://***/ Conclusions: The semantic processing of biomedical literature presented in this paper embeds documents within the Web of Data and facilitates the execution of concept-based queries against the entire digital library. Our approach delivers a flexible and adaptable set of tools for metadata enrichment and semantic processing of biomedical documents. The main objective of the Open Robot/Resource interface for the Network (ORiN) is to establish the open middleware that provides unified API for accessing information in robots, devices and equipments used in FA (Factory Automation) system based on technologies that have already been designed for information infrastructures commonly used in PCs and telecommunication services. This paper describes overview of ORiN, such as the objective of ORiN, the architecture, and key technologies. applications developed according to ORiN specifications that were applied to real manufacturing environments are reported in detail. This paper also reports the promotion activities of the ORiN Forum.

Multicore processors have been adopted for consumer electronics like portable electronics, mobile phones, car navigation systems, digital TVs and games to obtain high performance with low power consumption. The OSCAR automatic parallelizing compiler has been developed to utilize these multicores easily. Also, a new Consumer Electronics Multicore application program interface (API) to use the OSCAR compiler with native sequential compilers for various kinds of multicores from different vendors has been developed in NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) "Multicore Technology for Realtime Consumer Electronics" project with Japanese 6 IT companies. This paper evaluates the parallel processing performance of multimedia applications using this API by the OSCAR compiler on the FR1000 4 VLIW cores multicore processor developed by Fujitsu Ltd, and the RP1 4 SH-4A cores multicore processor jointly-developed by Renesas Technology Corp., Hitachi Ltd. and Waseda University. As the results, the parallel codes generated by the OSCAR compiler using the API give us 3.27 times speedup on average using 4 cores against 1 core on the FR1000 multicore, and 3.31 times speedup on average using 4 cores against 1 core on the RP1 multicore.

Hierarchical Scanning Data Structure for Additive Manufacturing

In additive manufacturing, the digital information of required object model is transferred to additive manufacturing (AM) machine using a technology-independent de facto file format called STL. The approximation of the actual object surface employing STL file causes loss of geometrical and topological information and introduces error to the digital model. This may also limit the manufacturing repeatability between AM machine and processes. This research focuses on building a common data generation platform directly from the commonly used parametric surface model (B-rep). The generic data structure named as Hierarchical Scanning Data Structure (HSDS) is proposed in this research. HSDS will store the actual digital scanning information systematically and sequentially. A common application program interface (API) platform is also proposed in this research, which can access the HSDS and generate machine readable file for different existing AM control systems. The data stored in HSDS can be retrieved remotely and be used by different existing AM controller supporting the cloud/cyber manufacturing process and ensure the platform-independent object repeatability. The proposed framework is implemented with examples and results are compared with the existing system. © 2017
