Popup blocking, form filling, and many other features of modern web browsers were first introduced as third-party extensions. New extensions continue to enrich browsers in unanticipated ways. However, powerful extensions require capabilities, such as cross-domain network access and local storage, which, if used improperly, pose a security risk. Several browsers try to limit extension capabilities, but an empirical survey we conducted shows that many extensions are over-privileged under existing mechanisms. This paper presents IBEX, a new framework for authoring, analyzing, verifying, and deploying secure browser extensions. Our approach is based on using type-safe, high-level languages to program extensions against an API providing access to a variety of browser features. We propose using Datalog to specify fine-grained access control and data flow policies to limit the ways in which an extension can use this API, thus restricting its privilege over security-sensitive web content and browser resources. We formalize the semantics of policies in terms of a safety property on the execution of extensions and develop a verification methodology that allows us to statically check extensions for policy compliance. Additionally, we provide visualization tools to assist with policy analysis, and compilers to translate extension source code to either. NET bytecode or JavaScript, facilitating cross-browser deployment of extensions. We evaluate our work by implementing and verifying 17 extensions with a diverse set of features and security policies. We deploy our extensions in Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, and a new experimental HTML5 platform called C3. In so doing, we demonstrate the versatility and effectiveness of our approach.

In this paper, we discuss the integration of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and smart objects with the Web. We present a set of research challenges which we believe are the most important ones rising from this integration and propose a prototype system, Uberdust, which addresses such challenges. Uberdust is a brokerage web service for connecting smart objects to the Internet of Things, providing storage, sharing and discovery of real-time and historical data from smart objects, devices & building installations around the world via the Web. Our system provides high-level language-independent APIs so IoT application developers may choose their favorite programming or scripting languages.

In certain business sectors adapting to modern and cost reducing technologies and service models can be still a challenge. This especially applies for health care related SME, such as hospitals, where cost reduction runs counter the need of being compliant to legal regulations and where the access control has to struggle against a diverse landscape of health care equipment accompanied by dynamic and complex role models. Outsourcing data storage and data processing seems not to reduce the complexity, rather bears the risks of reduced data availability, loss or abuse of data and can increase legal compliance risks and concerns. Since this applies for many SMEs, a common platform, such as an ecosystem, can help to lower the entrance barrier by regaining helpful management functionalities, standardized basic services and therefore push the adoption to modern cost reducing service consumption scenarios. In this paper a generic design pattern for realizing distributed authorization in an API ecosystem is presented. The pattern is applied within a research project, which aims to develop an ecosystem for trading and consuming services within demanding business sectors and reduce lock-in effects for both, service providers and consumers. The concept of Distributed Authorization is applied in a new complex multi entity use-case, where access policies for RESTful APIs can be designed flexible under consideration of service providers' and consumers' requirements which are enforced by a central trusted 3rd party provider.

We propose Perform-ML, the first Machine Learning (ML) framework for analysis of massive and dense data which customizes the algorithm to the underlying platform for the purpose of achieving optimized resource efficiency. PerformML creates a performance model quantifying the computational cost of iterative analysis algorithms on a pertinent platform in terms of FLOPs, communication, and memory, which characterize runtime, storage, and energy. The core of Perform-ML is a novel parametric data projection algorithm, called Elastic Dictionary (ExD), that enables versatile and sparse representations of the data which can help in minimizing performance cost. We show that Perform-ML can achieve the optimal performance objective, according to our cost model, by platform aware tuning of the ExD parameters. An accompanying API ensures automated applicability of Perform-ML to various algorithms, datasets, and platforms. Proof-of-concept evaluations of massive and dense data on different platforms demonstrate more than an order of magnitude improvements in performance compared to the state of the art, within guaranteed user-defined error bounds.

The free and open source Tele-Operation Platform of the MPI for Biological Cybernetics (TeleKyb) is an end-to-end software framework for the development of bilateral teleoperation systems between human interfaces (e.g., haptic force feedback devices or gamepads) and groups of quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Among drivers for devices and robots from various hardware manufactures, TeleKyb provides a high-level closed-loop robotic controller for mobile robots that can be extended dynamically with modules for state estimation, trajectory planning, processing, and tracking. Since all internal communication is based on the Robot Operating System (ROS), TeleKyb can be easily extended to meet future needs. The capabilities of the overall framework are demonstrated in both an experimental validation of the controller for an individual quadrotor and a complex experimental setup involving bilateral human-robot interaction and shared formation control of multiple UAVs.

Developers often release different versions of their applications to support various platform/programming-language application programming interfaces (APIs). To migrate an application written using one API (source) to another API (target), a developer must know how the methods in the source API map to the methods in the target API. Given a typical platform or language exposes a large number of API methods, manually writing API mappings is prohibitively resource-intensive and may be error prone. Recently, researchers proposed to automate the mapping process by mining API mappings from existing code-bases. However, these approaches require as input a manually ported (or at least functionally similar) code across source and target APIs. To address the shortcoming, this paper proposes TMAP: Text Mining based approach to discover likely API mappings using the similarity in the textual description of the source and target API documents. To evaluate our approach, we used TMAP to discover API mappings for 15 classes across: 1) Java and C# API, and 2) Java ME and Android API. We compared the discovered mappings with state-of-the-art source code analysis based approaches: Rosetta and StaMiner. Our results indicate that TMAP on average found relevant mappings for 57% more methods compared to previous approaches. Furthermore, our results also indicate that TMAP on average found exact mappings for 6.5 more methods per class with a maximum of 21 additional exact mappings for a single class as compared to previous approaches.

We describe how to verify security properties of C code for cryptographic protocols by using a general-purpose verifier. We prove security theorems in the symbolic model of cryptography. Our techniques include: use of ghost state to attach formal algebraic terms to concrete byte arrays and to detect collisions when two distinct terms map to the same byte array;decoration of a crypto API with contracts based on symbolic terms;and expression of the attacker model in terms of C programs. We rely on the general-purpose verifier VCC;we guide VCC to prove security simply by writing suitable header files and annotations in implementation files, rather than by changing VCC itself. We formalize the symbolic model in Coq in order to justify the addition of axioms to VCC.

This study is a numerical analysis with the peak power of sound channel under its numerical range of the region as the signal of voice communication can automatically start Bluetooth on iOS smart phone systems. Besides, the voice communication link using Bluetooth protocol. At the same time, the entire system is implemented in the intelligent mobile devices. In this study, the intelligent mobile devices use microphone and mobile device operating system's built-in audio API to collect the data from the peak power channel of voice. The collected data is trended and noise reduction processing, so that it is easy to be used to identify trends in data. From the data analysis of the experimental results show that the significant differences in peak power generated by the people blowing sound and spoken voice data. Then, it can use the peak power value as a voice call to control the start signal of Bluetooth. The user can automatically open the call process by the people blowing sound without any manually processes. Besides, the peak power identification model is also a universal model, it can be easily extended into other operating systems on smart phone.

ROMIO, a representative MPI-IO implementation, has been widely used in recent large-scale parallel computations. The two-phase I/O optimization scheme of ROMIO improves I/O performance for non-contiguous access patterns;however, this scheme still has room to improve performance to make it suitable for recent data-intensive computing. We propose overlapping data exchange operations with file I/O operations by using a multithreaded scheme to achieve further I/O throughput improvement. We show up to 60% improvement by the multithreaded two-phase I/O relative to the original two-phase I/O in performance evaluation of collective write operations on a Lustre file system of a Linux PC cluster.

With the increasing popularity and wide penetration of mobile smart devices, the advanced capabilities of mobile phones and tablets are being incorporated into assistive technologies. These technologies are crucial for assisting the elderly and people with disabilities in order for them to live independently. There are a myriad ways of designing and developing mobile assistive applications today, each comes with its pros and cons. In this paper we investigate the tradeoffs to be considered when trying to build a "one-size-fits-all" cross platform solution to the existing assistive technology. We outline the design decisions with respect to cross-platform issues, performance, development costs, maintenance overhead, and so on. These design and implementation decisions are the outcome of our two prototype implementations: (i) the development of a cross-mobile application that helps users effectively navigate the outdoor public transit system;and (ii) the development of an application that monitors a user's movement and detects certain abnormal behaviors such as falling. We also further investigate the system level concerns such as the performance and efficiency of data storage. We found that it is still challenging to develop a truly "one-size-fits-all" application with today's mobile techniques. However, this is an important first step towards platform independence of assistive technologies.
