Smart city is a next-generation city planning. In the smart city, some value-added services such as energy saving and optimization of traffic are provided using wide variety of logs collected from various appliances and sensors. We are currently developing a smart city platform, called Scallop4SC, which supports collecting and processing the extremely large-scale log data. This system stores variety of logs on the HBase key-value store, and supports powerful data processing by Hadoop MapReduce. The goal of this paper is to propose service API of Scallop4SC. The API should be implemented as a Web service, which allows heterogeneous clients to access large-scale log (of energy, device and environment), as well as house configuration data of the smart city. In order to cover queries from a variety of applications, we design possible combinations of service type, data type, access type and queries, based on practical service scenarios. As a case study, we present concrete smart city services for energy saving and quality of life improvement. Then, we evaluate how the proposed API can implement these practical services.

Software Defined Networking (SDN) has brought a paradigmatic shift in the networking industry and has led to significant benefits in the data-center and enterprise network domains. The service provider networks that form the largest segment of networking industry, are now evaluating SDN technologies for adoption. In this paper, we present a SDN framework for service provider networks and report the first field trial of SDN in a tier-1 service provider domain. The proposed SDN framework is built using Carrier Ethernet and augmented with recently proposed Segment Routing paradigm manifested through Software Defined-Carrier Ethernet Switch Routers (SD-CESRs). Carrier Ethernet on account of its distinct, programmable control plane and Segment Routing through its source routing capabilities facilitates SDN implementation. The SD-CESRs are deployed in a tier-1 service provider network in the metropolis of Mumbai. The SDN framework is extended through specific APIs to enhance revenue bearing services portfolio of the service provider and performance results from the field are shown to validate the benefits of SDN adoption.

Rough set theory is a popular and powerful machine learning tool. It is especially suitable for dealing with information systems that exhibit inconsistencies, i.e. objects that have the same values for the conditional attributes but a different value for the decision attribute. In line with the emerging granular computing paradigm, rough set theory groups objects together based on the indiscernibility of their attribute values. Fuzzy rough set theory extends rough set theory to data with continuous attributes, and detects degrees of inconsistency in the data. Key to this is turning the indiscernibility relation into a gradual relation, acknowledging that objects can be similar to a certain extent. In very large datasets with millions of objects, computing the gradual indiscernibility relation (or in other words, the soft granules) is very demanding, both in terms of runtime and in terms of memory. It is however required for the computation of the lower and upper approximations of concepts in the fuzzy rough set analysis pipeline. Current non-distributed implementations in R are limited by memory capacity. For example, we found that a state of the art non-distributed implementation in R could not handle 30,000 rows and 10 attributes on a node with 62GB of memory. This is clearly insufficient to scale fuzzy rough set analysis to massive datasets. In this paper we present a parallel and distributed solution based on Message Passing Interface (MPI) to compute fuzzy rough approximations in very large information systems. Our results show that our parallel approach scales with problem size to information systems with millions of objects. To the best of our knowledge, no other parallel and distributed solutions have been proposed so far in the literature for this problem.

The Optimized Neuro Genetic Fast Estimator (ONGFE) is a software tool that allows for embedding system, subsystem, and component failure detection, identification, and prognostics (FDI&P) capability by using Intelligent Software Elements (ISE) based upon Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). With an application programming Interface (API), highly innovative algorithms are compiled for efficient distributed intelligence instantiation within embedded systems. The original design had the purpose of providing a real time kernel to deploy health monitoring functions for Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) and Real Time Monitoring (RTM) systems in a broad variety of applications (such as aerospace, structural, and widely distributed support systems). The ONGFE contains embedded fast and on-line training for designing ANNs to perform several high performance FDI&P functions. A key advantage of this technology is an optimization block based upon pseudogenetic algorithms which compensate for effects due to initial weight values and local minimums without the computational burden of genetic algorithms. The ONGFE also provides a synchronization block for communication with secondary diagnostic modules. The algorithms are designed for a distributed, scalar, and modular deployment. Based on this technology, a scheme for conducting sensor data validation has been embedded in Smart Sensors.

We present the source-to-source TRACO compiler allowing for increasing program locality and parallelizing arbitrarily nested loop sequences in numerical applications. Algorithms for generation of tiled code and extracting synchronization-free slices composed of tiles are presented. Parallelism of arbitrary nested loops is obtained by creating a kernel of computations represented in the OpenMP standard to be executed independently on many CPUs. We consider benchmarks, typical from compute-intensive sequences of algebra operations or numerical computation from industry and engineering. The speed-up of programs generated by TRACO are discussed. Related compilers and techniques are considered. Future work is outlined.

Energy-efficient computer systems are making increasing use of processors that have multiple core units, DVFS, and virtualization support. However, current system clocks have not been usually designed to cope with the capacity of such mechanisms to decelerate/accelerate the passage of time, which increases the time drifts in the system and produces two adverse side effects. First, a reduction in the precision of the system clocks, which makes it infeasible to run applications that are dependent on precise time measurements. Second, increasing the rate of system resynchronization with an external global clock, which adds more noise to the system and counteracts the attainment of a desirable energy efficiency. As an alternative to the system clock, we propose an original virtual clock, named RVEC, with the property that the time count is strictly increasing and precise (SIP). A preliminary experimental evaluation of an implementation of RVEC in Linux using a beowulf cluster of four energy-efficient computer systems showed that RVEC exhibited the SIP property while was highly precise and had negligible overhead in comparison with representative Linux system clocks. Furthermore, we used RVEC to build a High-Precision Global Clock (HPGC) which is free from resynchronization and implemented HPGC in the OpenMPI library as a time synchronization service for the MPI_Wtime() function to improve its timekeeping functions and lower the system noise. Our preliminary results from microbenchmarks executing in the same cluster indicated that the HPGC is highly scalable and precise solution which allowed the microbenchmarks to stay globally synchronized by using only 30 messages per node to initially synchronize the cluster nodes, thanks to the RVEC's SIP property. These results suggest that RVEC and HPGC can be effective alternatives to the system clock and the global clock respectively, in energy-efficient computer systems, especially for MPI applications running on beowulf cluste

Wildfire is a constant risk due to its danger on both human and natural resources so modeling and simulation is an important tool to understand and forecast this phenomenon. A basic element of any simulation model is to define a way to store, compare and exchange observation and model results. Without a clear and standardized data structure, results and observations lack usability, inter-comparability and expressiveness. In this article we propose a well defined data format and API that can represent observation and model outputs. It provides a convenient way to transform fire data and can export any simulated or observed fire into KML for easy visualization. This specification enables the implementation of an experimental frame that is independent of simulation code. A database of more than 600 fires has been compiled using the API, enabling large scale reanalysis for any code that can be adapted to the proposed experimental frame.

In the present paper we introduce a new software tool which can be used for minimizing finite automata. The distinguishing feature of this tool is that it's primarily aimed at nondeterministic finite automata minimization. It provides several exact and heuristic minimization methods and uses parallel techniques such as OpenMP and MPI to speed up the most time consuming parts of the implemented algorithms. The description of implemented methods and available commands as well as some experimental results are provided.

The main goal of the current work is to mobilize knowledge for conserving and managing biodiversity using the latest available technologies. The current paper propose the visualization of GPS data into a web application using Google Maps or another public internet map. The GPS data obtained from wildlife equipped with collars is represented using relational databases (Microsoft SQL Database and the recent introduced Geography type), analytical data structure (using OLAP cubes, with SQL Server Analysis Services) and a biodiversity management web application with a user friendly interface. The web application is available to any authenticated user to view at a glance the monitored area details and different monitoring information, according to user role access rights. Our main goal is to allow different categories of users to be properly informed: from simple interested public allowed to see some general information to decision makers to help them objectively assess the real situation or managing specialist to assist in their current activity with continuous and comprehensive monitoring information as support for field actions. The application was designed to be able to efficiently handle large quantities of GPS point records as in the future we expect along with technology advances, more and more raw data will be available. We mainly focused on three aspects: a) fast, scalable and flexible data storage model based on distributed databases, b) efficient communication with Google maps API and c) analytical data structure (OLAP) able to directly provide compressed data packages for viewing purpose and also to be able to scale information at different map zoom levels.

In this paper, we present our overall design of OpenGL SC 1.0.1 emulating library based on the desktop OpenGL hardware environment. This kind of emulation library provides benefits such as efficient developing environment, cost-effectiveness, rapid and stable implementation and easy emigration to various systems. We aimed at the implementation of the whole OpenGL SC 1.0.1 features and all the extensions, through using the OpenGL 1.3 facilities, targeting a Linux system with nVIDIA GeForce graphics cards. The OpenGL SC specification presented three extensions of GL_OES_single_precision, GL_EXT_paletted_texture, and GL_EXT_shared_texture_palette. However, currently available graphics cards fail to support these extensions directly, and thus, we added customized software emulation features into our design.
