The Tightly Coupled Accelerators (TCA) architecture that we proposed in previous work enables direct communication between accelerators over nodes. In this paper, we present a proof-of-concept GPU cluster called the HA-PACS/TCA using the PEACH2 chip that we designed as an interconnection router chip based on the TCA architecture. Our system demonstrated 2.0 mu sec of latency on inter-node GPU-to-GPU communication with a PCIe Gen2 x8 by RDMA, reducing minimum latency to just 44% of the InfiniBand-QDR and MPI using GPUDirect for RDMA. Through results of Himeno benchmark tests, we demonstrated that our TCA architecture improved performance scalability with the small-sized problem by up to 61%.

We propose a novel software platform based on the notion of context-awareness which allows rapid and easy development of context aware applications. One of the fundamental goals of the proposed platform is extensibility, allowing the platform to react to new requirements without making fundamental and substantial changes. The Context Aware application Development Platform-PCAD-has inspired from an operating system and modeled as a layered architecture. It exhibits a plug-and-play behavior very similar to devices and device drivers found on an operating system/kernel. The platform offers functions such as data management, notification, security and privacy as services. The platform provides a public interface to application developers in their development of context-aware applications. It covers a wide range of disparate application domains such as smart city and livestock monitoring applications.

The backbone of a large-scale supercomputer is the interconnection network. As compute nodes become more energy-efficient, the interconnect is accounting for an increasing proportion of the total system energy consumption. The interconnect's energy consumption is, however, only starting to receive serious attention. Some hardware-based schemes have been proposed that exploit idle periods or low utilisation, either by turning off the links or by lowering the frequency and voltage. Although these schemes are effective in certain cases, they do not have enough global information about the application's communication behaviour to efficiently manage the network power consumption. This paper proposes an alternative approach: moving the intelligence into the PMPI layer of the MPI library, and using prediction to discover repetitive patterns in the application's communication behaviour. The core of the prediction algorithm is an n-gram extraction technique, which can accurately predict not only when a link will become unused but also when it will become active again, allowing lanes to be switched off during the idle periods and switched back on again in time to avoid incurring a significant performance degradation. Many HPC applications benefit from prediction, since they have repetitive computation and communication phases. By implementing the energy-saving mechanism inside the MPI library, existing MPI programs do not need to be modified. Using an event-driven simulator, driven by representative HPC workloads, we demonstrate average energy savings in Infiniband switches up to around 33%, while the average execution time increase is only up to 1%.

Contemporary parallel scientific codes often rely on message passing for inter-process communication. However, inefficient coding practices or multithreading (e.g., via MP I_THREAD_MULTIPLE) can severely stress the underlying message processing infrastructure, resulting in potentially unacceptable impacts on application performance. In this article, we propose and evaluate a novel method for addressing this issue: 'Fuzzy Matching'. This approach has two components. First, it exploits the fact most server-class CPUs include vector operations to parallelize message matching. Second, based on a survey of point-to-point communication patterns in representative scientific applications, the method further increases parallelization by allowing matches based on 'partial truth', i.e., by identifying probable rather than exact matches. We evaluate the impact of this approach on memory usage and performance on Knight's Landing and Skylake processors. At scale (262,144 Intel Xeon Phi cores), the method shows up to 1.13 GiB of memory savings per node in the MPI library, and improvement in matching time of 95.9%;smaller-scale runs show run-time improvements of up to 31.0% for full applications, and up to 6.1% for optimized proxy applications.

Web APIs provide a systematic and extensible approach for application-to-application interaction. Developers using web APIs are forced to accompany the API providers in their software evolution tasks. In order to understand the distress caused by this imposition on web API client developers we perform a semi-structured interview with six such developers. We also investigate how major web API providers organize their API evolution, and we explore how this affects source code changes of their clients. Our exploratory study of the Twitter, Google Maps, Facebook and Netflix web APIs analyzes the state of web API evolution practices and provides insight into the impact of service evolution on client software. Our study is complemented with a set of observations regarding best practices for web API evolution.

As FPGA resources continue to increase, FPGAs present attractive features to the High Performance Computing community. These include the power-efficient computation and application-specific acceleration benefits, as well as tighter integration between compute and I/O resources. This paper considers the ability of an FPGA to address another, increasingly important, feature - resiliency. Specifically, a minimally-invasive monitoring infrastructure operating over a sideband network is presented. This includes a multi-chip protocol, IP cores that implement the protocol, and a tool to instrument existing hardware accelerator FPGA designs. To demonstrate the functionality, the system has been implemented on a cluster of FPGA devices running off-the-shelf MPI and Linux. We demonstrate the ability to do integrated software and hardware accelerator checkpointing with restart under a variety of injected faults.

Execution of MPI applications on Grid deployments suffers from node and network failure that motivates the use of fault tolerant MPI implementations. So, to ensure good performance in Grid, scalable fault tolerance should be taken into account. Research in fault tolerant MPI has led to the development of several fault tolerant MPI environments. The most popular approach is with coordinated checkpointing. Traditional coordinated checkpoint suffers from high storage and communication overhead because all processes must participate in the checkpointing at a time;also they all must roll back to the latest consistent global checkpoint even those processes that didn't fail. So in this paper, we propose a mailbox-based non blocking minimum-process coordinated checkpoint protocol (MNMCCP) for hierarchical Grid in which processes on different processors communicate indirectly by sending messages over the network through mailbox-based technique at a shared node. In this protocol, only the processes that communicated since last committed checkpoint will participate in the checkpoint at a time resulting in a reduction in stable storage access and enhanced performance. Our proposed protocol also exploits the mailbox of each process as an events logger since it logs the messages sent to the process in strict FIFO order. This combination of our coordinated protocol with message logging offers several additional advantages including limited computation lost, simplified recovery procedure and bounded recovery time because the effects of a failure are confined only to the processes that fail. From the other hand, using the proposed mailboxes technique ensures the reliable delivery of messages and prevents messages sent to the migrating or faulty process form losing and retransmitting. They will be kept in its associated mailbox, and the process will get them from the mailbox after restarting on the new resource. The PAPI library [1] was originally developed to provide portable access to the hardware performance counters found on a diverse collection of modern microprocessors. Rather than learning and writing to a new performance infrastructure each time code is moved to a new machine, measurement code can be written to the PAPI API which abstracts away the underlying interface. Over time, other system components besides the processor have gained performance interfaces (for example, GPUs and network interfaces). PAPI was redesigned to have a component architecture to allow modular access to these new sources of performance data [2]. In addition to incremental changes in processor support, the recent PAPI 5 release adds support for two emerging concerns in the high-performance landscape: energy consumption and cloud computing. As processor densities climb, the thermal properties and energy usage of high performance systems are becoming increasingly important. We have extended the PAPI interface to simultaneously monitor processor metrics, thermal sensors, and power meters to provide clues for correlating algorithmic activity with thermal response and energy consumption. We have also extended PAPI to provide support for running inside of Virtual Machines (VMs). This ongoing work will enable developers to use PAPI to engage in performance analysis in a virtualized cloud environment.

The Fast Molecular Imaging SimulaTor (FastMIST) is a hybrid analytical/Monte Carlo code which can simulate almost any arbitrary time-varying source distribution. Additionally, the position of each event can be spatially transformed according to a predefined temporal motion pattern allowing for the simulation of motion-corrupted data. The core algorithms are implemented in C++ following a modular design that is readily parallelisable using OpenMP. The execution time for a FastMIST simulation is greatly reduced compared to a full Monte Carlo simulation, such as GATE, as FastMIST uses forced detection coupled to random sampling of experimentally measured depth-dependent PSFs for parallel hole collimators. A FastMIST simulation of a parallel-hole collimator gamma camera, acquiring 300k photons per projection (64 projections) with source attenuation modelling disabled, took less than 30 seconds on an 15 Intel processor (2.4Ghz).
