The growth for scientific data has led to data analysis being a critical step in the scientific process. The next-generation scientific data analysis environment needs to address two challenges i) productivity of the end-user and ii) scalability of the workflows. The need to ensure both goals requires us to revisit the design and implementation of workflow tools. In this paper, we study the interaction of Tigres and HOCL-TS towards meeting these goals. Tigres and HOCL-TS have evolved separately;however their complementary foci allows us to study these issues in greater detail. We describe the pros and cons of an approach that integrates Tigres and HOCL-TS and HOCL-TS extension to support common non-functional requirements such as logging and monitoring that can be made available to the users through the Tigres API.

Aperture is an open, adaptable and extensible Web 2.0 visualization framework, designed to produce visualizations for analysts and decision makers in any common web browser. Aperture utilizes a novel layer based approach to visualization assembly, and a data mapping API that simplifies the process of adaptable transformation of data and analytic results into visual forms and properties. This common visual layer and data mapping API, combined with core elements such as contextually derivable color palettes, layout and symbol ontology services is designed to enable highly creative and expressive visual analytics, rapidly and with less effort. This paper introduces the Aperture framework, describing key features of the programming API and reference implementation, presents example use cases, and proposes an approach for measuring technical performance metrics for software development, and operational performance metrics for visualization support of analysis and decision making.

The web application paradigm has become a dominant choice due to the ubiquity of web browsers across PCs and mobile devices, and the layer of abstraction that they provide. However, browsers have traditionally communicated only with servers, never from one browser to another. The WebRTC API overcomes this limitation, providing further avenues for the web application paradigm to evolve. In this paper we present Cyclon.p2p an implementation of the Cyclon peer sampling protocol using the WebRTC API. We provide a detailed overview of our system, and conduct a thorough evaluation of the implementation in real-world and simulated experiments. Our results strongly suggest that our implementation is feasible for large scale deployment in real world Web applications.

Sustainable management of large amounts of research data is gaining in importance for research projects all over the world. The European project DARIAH aims to address this topic for the arts and humanities community. The DARIAH Bit Preservation, as a part of an archiving system for the arts and humanities, allows for a high performance, sustainable, and distributed storage of research data as basis of virtual research environments. A great challenge in designing such a service is to provide a standardized, consistent yet easy-to-use API for accessing the data that remains stable even if backend technology changes over time. As a solution, this paper presents the RESTful API of the DARIAH Bit Preservation which includes an administrative extension, and which is secured by an Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure (AAI) based on SAML. An exemplary implementation illustrates that the API offers distributed access by usage of the HTTP protocol and is able to handle a high number of files. Data transfer rates of up to 45 MB/s were achieved for uploading large files in the local network.

Software pipelines are often used in scientific applications in fields such as bioinformatics. Unix pipes allow processes in the pipeline to concurrently execute and communicate without disk I/O on a single shared-memory node. However, a significant number of CPU-bound, memory-bound, and I/O-bound software pipelines could benefit from the distribution of work across multiple nodes. Rewriting applications to use MPI is often time consuming. mpififo is an MPI-based tool that allows for the easy distribution of the processes in a pipeline across multiple nodes. This paper describes the design of mpififo, and presents an example of its use in a bioinformatics application. mpififo is available for download at https://***/nathanweeks/mpififo.

This paper gives an overview of UNR-PF, an open-source, standards-based platform to enable multi-location daily life support services using abstracted functionality from a cloud of robots. Such services require seamless ability-adapted physical support and interaction across multiple areas, provided through collaboration of multiple robots, ubiquitous sensors and smartphones over a network. UNR-PF provides a common infrastructure that separates development of service applications and hardware-based components and intelligently mediates between them. First, we summarize the requirements and design goals initiated in previous work and then describe how the platform was integrated by outlining the implementation of the internal modules and APIs. Finally, we explain how to use UNR-PF by the example of a simple life support scenario and discuss practical aspects of component and service development for integration of a robotic service.

Using passwords to verify a user's identity is the most widely deployed method for electronic authentication. When system administrators need to recover lost passwords or test accounts for easily guessable passwords, it can require millions of hash function and string comparison operations. These operations can be computationally expensive but are easily parallelizable because each password can be tested independently. Therefore, using high performance computing (HPC) can greatly reduce the time required to perform password recovery. Due to the high level of fine-grained parallelism of this type of problem, GPU computing using Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) can be used to further improve performance. The scale of HPC can be further increased through the use of multiple GPUs, but this requires communication between the GPU devices and can reduce the overall performance due to increased communications latency. In this work a well established HPC framework, Message Passing Interface (MPI), was used to minimize the amount of latency and handle the communication between the devices. This allowed for a course-grained division of the problem using MPI where each device applies a fine-grained division of the problem using CUDA to perform the actual calculations. This paper describes three dictionary-based password recovery algorithms that use both MPI and CUDA. In this approach the hashed values of known words are computed and compared with hash values of unknown user passwords. The algorithms differed in GPU memory utilization and how the data was divided and distributed among the MPI nodes and GPU devices. A divided dictionary algorithm split the dictionary of potential passwords over the GPUs and copied the password database to each GPU. Virtually all major real-time operating systems such as QNX, VxWorks, LynxOS, and most real-time variants of Linux expose processor affinity APIs to restrict task migrations. Initially motivated by throughput and isolation reasons, the ability to flexibly control migrations on a per-task basis has also proved to be useful from a schedulability perspective. However, as the motivation to use processor affinities is highly application-specific, the two interests can conflict, i.e., the fixed, user-specified processor affinities chosen for non-schedulability reasons can actually limit any possible gains in schedulability. This paper specifically addresses the scenario where processor affinities are given as input, and investigates the following question: while maintaining API compatibility (i.e., without changing the interface exposed to the programmer), is it possible to improve schedulability beyond what Linux and Linux-like systems currently offer, without violating the original affinity restrictions? To answer this question, we explore the similarities between priority-based scheduling with processor affinities and the assignment problem with seniority and job priority constraints, studied previously by Caron et al. in an operations-research context, to derive a more generic model of migrations. Based on vertex-weighted bipartite matchings, the proposed model exploits the idea of shifting high-priority tasks among processors in their affinity set, in order to accommodate lower-priority tasks that have more constrained processor affinities. The proposed approach is analyzed with a novel shifting-aware schedulability analysis based on linear programming. An empirical evaluation in terms of schedulability shows shifting to be effective, although performance naturally degrades if migration overheads are high.

Mouse, joystick and keyboard controls in 3D games have long since become a second nature for generations of gamers. Recent advances in webcam-based tracking technologies made it easy to bring natural human motions and gestures into play. However, video tracking is a CPU-intensive process, which may have a negative impact on game performance. We measured this impact for different types of 3D content and found it to be minimal, on multi-core platforms. We provide details on implementation and evaluation of our system. Also, we suggest several examples how natural motion can be used in 3D games.

There are people who cannot communicate in the same way with others. Deaf and hard-of-hearing people use sign languages for their communication with other people. Sign languages are also used for the communication between deaf and non-deaf people, including different types of hand gestures and facial expressions for communication and emotional expression. Sign language recognition and gesture-based controls are applications that are used by gesture recognition technologies, and it is a fact that this technology has reduced the communication gap, while these systems are used for converting gestures to text or speech. The focus of our research is to analyze real-time sign language translators that are used for language translation. Sign Language Translation Systems that were developed from 2017 to 2021 are analysed in this paper.
